  • Purpose - This study is to verify the impact of the documentation of key audit matters on the value relevance of accounting information in accordance with the revised accounting audit standards in 2017. Investors will be able to identify the company's significant financial risks through key audit matters and use them to make investment decisions. Design/methodology/approach - From 2011 to 2019, the final sample is 290, based on the December settlement of accounts listed on the securities market. Ohlson (1995) was used to verify the incremental link between net income and the book value as a determinant of corporate value. In addition, the value of the interaction between the key audit matters and the net income is a significant (+) relationship with the share price and the value of the interaction between the key audit matters and the book value is a significant (-) relationship with the share price. This means that the key audit matters is the determining factor of corporate value, positively reflects the accounting information in net income and negatively reflects the accounting information in book value. Second, among the key audit matters, the fair value assessment of financial instruments and the adequacy of premiums reserve have a significant impact on the value relevance of accounting information. Research implications or Originality - The results of this study suggest that investors recognize key audit matters as information about the company's major financial risks and reflect them differently in the value relevance of accounting information.

  • This research is to analyze how an introduction of full-time quality control("QC") personnel system in audit firms influences on audit quality and verify how important it is to establish the quality control system for auditing quality. We measure audit quality as the level of discretionary accruals and compare the differences between audit firms with QC and without QC. In addition, we analyze the difference in audit qualities between before and after activating the full-time QC personnel system by comparing audit quality of before 2015 with that of after 2016. The results of this study are summarized as follows. First, the audit quality is higher when audit firms have QC personnel. Second, the audit quality is improved after the introduction of the full-time QC personnel system.

  • Since 1995, national and local governments have competitively initiated many and large GIS projects and audit for the projects becomes an important issue. So far, the audit in the Information Technology(IT) area has tried to deal with the issue but ineffectiveness has been found for the successful GIS project management. Effective auditing is a critical element for the project management. In order to establish a proper audit model for the GIS projects and to promote auditing activities in the projects, this study constructs two hypotheses and tries to prove them. The hypotheses are as follows : 1) For a good audits model for GIS, unique characteristics of a GIS project audit items and the scope of the audit need to be identified. 2) The scope of audit needs to be classified according to the requests from tasks in the projects. To prove the hypotheses, this study analyzes positive aspects of audit in IT and construction projects, clarifies the audit items in GIS projects by comparing with them, and classifies the scope of the GIS audit based on various types of GIS projects. As a results, 5 types of the GIS audit are identified : (1) audit for project management, (2) audit focused on IT, (3) audit characterized by GIS technologies, (4) GIS database audit and (5) consulting services for critical problems in the projects. In addition, 4 criteria in classifying the GIS projects are suggested for the GIS audit. The 4 criteria are domain, scope, duration, and GIS applications technologies. Especially, GIS technology considered in this study includes GIS software, methodologies for GIS development, GIS database and quality control of GIS data, which are not usually reflected in the existing studies about in GIS audit. Because the GIS audit depends on a type of GIS projects, scopes of the audit can be flexibly reconstructed in accordance with the types of GIS projects. This is a key to effective and realistic audit for the future GIS projects. Strategies for effective GIS audit are also proposed in terms of the following: GIS project management, goal establishment in each audit stage, documentation from GIS audit, timing strategies for intensive GIS audit, and designing team structure.

  • The purpose of this study is to make an empirical analysis of how voluntary disclosure level has an impact on auditor's audit fees and audit hours and additionally identify if the relationship between the twos depends on the accounting quality. As final sample for analysis, this study targeted the KOSPI listed firms from 2007 to 2013, and as for audit fees(audit hours), 4,572 (4,460) corporate/annual data were used. The results from the empirical analysis in this study are as follows. First, auditor's audit fees appeared higher in KOSPI listed firms compared to the non-KOSPI listed firms, and when targeting the KOSPI listed firms only, the results were the same. Second, auditor's audit hours increased significantly in the KOSPI listed firms compared to the non-KOSPI listed firms, and this result appeared consistently even when analyzing the KOSPI listed firms only. Third, when the accounting quality was not good in the KOSPI listed firms, auditor's audit fees got significantly lower, whereas when targeting the KOSPI listed firms only, no relevance was found. Fourth, when the accounting quality was bad in the KOSPI listed firms, auditor's audit hours were found to have been spent less, but when analyzing the KOSPI listed firms only, such a fact was not identified. This study is significant in that it examined the fact that auditor's audit risk depends on voluntary disclosure level in terms of audit fees and audit hours.

  • Auditors' subjective opinions m audit activities weaken reliability in audit judgments. This paper suggests fixed quantity models through requirement priority for improving objective evaluation and priorities of requirements in information system audit. The value of requirements was evaluated based on customers' requirements with a premise that they are not in the same level. Furthermore, the audit objective judgments were enhanced to enable fixed quantity of subjective audit by subdividing detailed evaluation index of requirement priority standards into importance of service and function on orderers' perspective, and sectioning cost and schedule on contractors' perspective.

  • The National Computerization Agency has been leading the Information Systems(IS) audit since 1987, as development of IS projects in governmental and public sectors have become daily issues. While many considerations on audit guidelines and techniques for quality management in IS have been given to respond to the fast increasing demand of audit process since mid 1990's, the study on the fact that how audit activities directly affect the quality of software process has been put aside. In this paper, we went through 74 audit results, which were reported by H auditing organization, and performed on 59 IS projects carried on 1999 through 2001. As a result of study, we found that more than one fourth of errors of Coding and Test phases are caused in the earlier phases, which naturally leads to the conclusions that auditing on earlier phases can save a lot of stitches in the later phases. Comparing two types of IS projects-the one that went through only one audit process, and the other that went through two audit processes-, we found that projects with two audits carry less errors on Planning, Analysis, Design phases as a whole, which revealed the facts that IS audit actually gives positive effects on the quality of software.

  • This paper empirically examines the relationship between one of the major corporate governance attributes; family ownership and the audit committee activity across a sample of 430 publicly traded firms on the Saudi Stock Exchange (Tadawul) for the period 2012-2019. Using the Pooled OLS regression, this study finds that family ownership is negatively associated with audit committee activity. This study reported that family ownership is negatively associated with audit committee activity, giving support to the convergence-of-interest hypothesis. Therefore, the existence of family ownership as a monitoring corporate governance mechanism substitutes the audit committee activity as another monitoring mechanism. This study provides empirical evidence on the associations of two internal corporate governance mechanisms, namely; family ownership and audit committee activity in the Saudi context where there is a paucity of research in this area. The findings of this study provide a new understanding regarding the extent to which family ownership impacts the activity of audit committees in manufacturing companies. Similarly, the companies' management, external auditors, bankers, and companies would also benefit from understanding the influential factors of the audit committee activities.
