  • Sealed flooded lead acid batteries are becoming popular in the industry because of their low cost as compared to their counterparts. State of Charge (SOC) estimation has always been an important factor in battery management systems. For the accurate SOC estimation, open circuit voltage (OCV) hysteresis should be modelled accurately. The hysteresis phenomenon of the sealed flooded lead acid battery is discussed in detail and its ultimate modeling is proposed based on the conventional parallelogram method. The SOC estimation is performed by using Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF) while the parameters of the battery are estimated using Auto Regressive with external input (ARX) method. The validity of the proposed method is verified by the experimental results. The SOC estimation error by the proposed method is less than 3 % all wing the 125hr test.

  • Tire roller is one of the most useful machines for the road constructions site. In this research, we are trying to develop tire roller which is operated by hydraulic transmission system instead of mechanical one. Now, we are trying to design the controller of tire roller in order to improve performance. Our present system model is somewhat different from the actual experimental results. Therefore we would like to develop new accurate modeling through ARX model by system identification method with random inputs. In this paper, we applied it to the steering system only. Later we will apply it to the traction system and expand to the whole tire roller system.

  • We demonstrate how social media content can be used to predict the unemployment rate, a real-world indicator. We present a novel method for predicting the unemployment rate using social media analysis based on natural language processing and statistical modeling. The system collects social media contents including news articles, blogs, and tweets written in Korean, and then extracts data for modeling using part-of-speech tagging and sentiment analysis techniques. The autoregressive integrated moving average with exogenous variables (ARIMAX) and autoregressive with exogenous variables (ARX) models for unemployment rate prediction are fit using the analyzed data. The proposed method quantifies the social moods expressed in social media contents, whereas the existing methods simply present social tendencies. Our model derived a 27.9% improvement in error reduction compared to a Google Index-based model in the mean absolute percentage error metric.

  • The relationship of widely used Open circuit Voltage (OCV) versus State of Charge (SOC) is critical for any reliable SOC estimation technique. However, the hysteresis existing in all type of battery which has been come to the market leads this relationship to a complicated one, especially in Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) battery. An accurate model for hysteresis phenomenon is essential for a reliable SOC identification. This paper aims to investigate and propose a method for hysteresis modeling. The SOC estimation is done by using Extended Kalman Filter (EKF), the parameter of the battery is modeled by Auto Regressive Exogenous (ARX) and estimated by using Recursive Least Square (RLS) filter to tract each element of the parameter of the model.

  • Time-series models like AR-ARX and ARMAX, provide a robust way to capture the dynamic properties of structures, and their residuals can be effectively used as features for damage detection. Even though several research papers discuss the implementation of AR-ARX and ARMAX models for damage diagnosis, they are basically been exploited so far for detecting the time instant of damage and also the spatial location of the damage. However, the inverse problem associated with damage quantification i.e. extent of damage using time series models is not been reported in the literature. In this paper, an approach to detect the extent of damage by combining the ARMAX model by formulating the inverse problem as a multi-constrained optimization problem and solving using a newly developed hybrid adaptive differential search with dynamic interaction is presented. The proposed variant of the differential search technique employs small multiple populations which perform the search independently and exchange the information with the dynamic neighborhood. The adaptive features and local search ability features are built into the algorithm in order to improve the convergence characteristics and also the overall performance of the technique. The multi-constrained optimization formulations of the inverse problem, associated with damage quantification using time series models, attempted here for the first time, can considerably improve the robustness of the search process. Numerical simulation studies have been carried out by considering three numerical examples to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed technique in robustly identifying the extent of the damage. Issues related to modeling errors and also measurement noise are also addressed in this paper.

  • Missiles suffer from flight instability problems at high angles of attack, since vortex flow over a fuselage cause lateral force to the body. To overcome this problem at a high angle of attack, the development of a real time vortex controller is needed. In this paper, Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) and feedback controllers are developed for real time vortex control. The POD method is one of the most well known techniques for modeling low order models that represent the original full-order model. An adaptive control algorithm is used for real time control.

  • This study presents a way to generate and manage engineering information by applying steel bridge information model with 3D shape to existing application program. ACIS solid modeling kernel is used to visualize 3D geometric shape of steel bridge on the AutoCAD program. The shape information of 3D solid model can be connected to structural design information of steel bridge by an application module based on information model. The application module for manipulating steel bridge information can be easily developed by ObjectARX programming library supporting functional expansion of AutoCAD program. End-users can use the application module without any additional environmental setup on the AutoCAD. Thus this study facilitates information management of steel bridge by using ACIS solid modeler and ISO/STEP methodology.

  • Polymer actuators, which are also called as smart materials, change their shapes when electrical, chemical, thermal, or magnetic energy is applied to them and are useful in wide variety of applications such as microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), machine components, and artificial muscles. For this study, Polyaniline/carbon-nanotube polymer actuator that is one of electroactive polymer actuators was prepared. Since the nonlinear phenomena of hysteresis and a step response are essential considerations for practical use of polymer actuators, we have investigated the movement of the Polyaniline/carbon-nanotube polymer actuator and have developed an integrated model that can be used for simulating and predicting the hysteresis and a step response during actuation. The Preisach hysteresis model, one of the most popular phenomenological models of hysteresis, were used for describing the hysteretic behavior of Polyaniline/carbon-nanotube polymer actuator while the ARX method, one of system identification techniques, were used for modeling a step response. In this paper, we first expain details in preparation of the Polyaniline/carbon-nanotube polymer then present the mathematical description of our model, the extraction of the parameters, simulation results from the model, and finally a comparison with measured data.

  • This study proposes a low order dynamic model of a building system in order to predict thermal behavior within a building and its energy consumption. The building system includes a thermally well-insulated room and an electric heater. It is modeled by a second order lumped RC thermal network based on the thermal-electrical analogy. In order to identify unknown parameters of the model, an experimental procedure is firstly detailed. Then, the different linear parametric models (ARMA, ARX, ARMAX, BJ, and OE models) are recalled. The parameters of the parametric models are obtained by the least square approach. The obtained parameters are interpreted to the parameters of the physically based model in accordance with their relationship. Afterwards, the obtained models are implemented in Matlab/Simulink(R) and are evaluated by the mean of the sum of absolute error (MAE) and the mean of the sum of square error (MSE) with the variable of indoor temperature of the room. Quantities of electrical energy and converted thermal energy are also compared. This study will permit a further study on Model Predictive Control adapting to the proposed model in order to reduce energy consumption of the building.
