  • Children from low-income families are vulnerable to variable psychological and emotional stress related to financial issues and dysfunctional families. The subjects were 15 1st to 3rd graders who were low on the Self Esteem Scale (SES). They were attending an after-school center for elementary school students. They participated in three art therapy groups from April to October 2005. Children's depressive symptoms and self-esteem were assessed using the Children's Depression Inventory (CDI) and an observational check-list. Results showed that the group art therapy program brought about significant effects on increasing self-esteem of the children and reducing depressive symptoms, showing that group art therapy can facilitate emotional and psycho-social growth of children from low-income families and can be developed in family-based community programs.

Especially school buildings are subjected to the influence of not only the educational philosophy and the national curriculum, but also the sociocultural context with the change of the times. This study aims to explore the contemporary trends of school architecture and give new inspiration to the school design practice. After it establishes the 'contemporary' school architecture as school buildings built from the second half of the 1980's to the present time, this paper classifies them into 4 categories : popularist trend, traditional and regional tendency, revival of classicism and the pursuit of art for art's sake.

Korean traditional Jogakbo is a common homemade item made from clothing remnants and is a part of the culture of womens quarters. Currently, Jogakbo is higly regarded for its artistic value and it finds a variety of uses in fashion. In particular, it is striking how its modern-style geometric lines and color composition are congruous with abstract art. In applying Jogakbo to fashion art design, we study the artistic expression of Jogakbo in 4 aspects; namely, line, color, material, and technique; and analyze the 4 artistic characteristics; beauty of naivety, simplicity, moderation and freedom. 8 dresses designed based on these 4 characteristics are presented as examples.

  • This study investigates the feasibility of the real time detection of tool breadage in face milling operation. The proposed methodology using an ART2 neural network overcomes a cumbersome task in terms of the learning or determining a threshold value. The features taken in the researchare the AR parameters modelled from a RLS, and those are proven to be good features for tool breakage from experiments. From the results of the off line application, we can conclude that an ART2 neural network can be well applied to the clustering of tool states in real time regardless of the unsupervised learning.

  • Ornament in late nineteenth century Art Nouveau movement, especially abstract ornament in Viennese Art Nouveau, has a very complex aesthetical background. Ornament, for them was not just decorations in outer appearance, but a determinant element of formal languages. Abstract ornament in Viennese Art Nouveau has its theoretical and aesthetical bases in the Interpretation of nature, that is, the theory of the abstract ornament was founded on a new interpretation of nature, which, in its turn, was derived from the differentiational selection of the contemporary views of nature. The modernity of abstract ornament consists in the very fact that it was founded on a new interpretation of nature. This study alms at reviewing how the new interpretation of nature by abstract ornament criticized, rejected and accepted the contemporary views of nature. The overall tendency of this study is to synthesize and analyze the historical background of Viennes Art-Nouveau in regard to aesthetic theories of nature. The analysis method of this study is interpretation of written documents which are related to the issue.
