The effects of precooling treatments on the storability of chicon were investigated during modified atmosphere (MA) storage. The forced air cooling showed faster precooling rate that reduced the internal temperature of chicon to $2{\pm}1^{\circ}C$, and the precooling time of forced air cooling was 1/6 of room cooling. The half cooling time was 3 hr 21 min in room cooling and 1 hr 17 min in forced air cooling. Weight loss was less than 0.5% in all treatments both $5^{\circ}C$ and $10^{\circ}C$ MA storage and maintained higher in forced air cooling treatment. The concentration of carbon dioxide, oxygen, and ethylene of $50{\mu}m$ ceramic film packages were observed higher at $10^{\circ}C$ than $5^{\circ}C$. The precooling effect on respiration reduction was not shown at $5^{\circ}C$, but appeared that the gas concentration of precooling treatments showed less carbon dioxide and higher oxygen than non precooling treatment by 9 days after $10^{\circ}C$ storage. Ethylene concentration of precooling treatments showed lower than non precooling treatment until 3 days both $5^{\circ}C$ and $10^{\circ}C$ MA storage. Precooling showed the effect on maintaining visual quality of chicon both $5^{\circ}C$ and $10^{\circ}C$ MA storage. However, the forced air cooling that showed faster precooling rate did not appeared more precooling effect on the visual quality than room cooling because the fast air flow (6.0 m/sec) of forced air cooling hit directly on chicon outer leaves and might cause physical damage to chicon. Although the forced air cooling showed the effect on maintaining quality of chicon, but additional studies should be needed that investigated proper air flow rate and cooling box structure can prevent physical damage by air flow.
This study was conducted to compare the storability of 6 chicory cultivars for producing chicon; 'Vintor', 'Focus', 'Metafora', 'Kibora', 'Nobus', and 'Redoria Red' grown in 2 regions: Chuncheon (plain region) and Pyeongchang (high land region). Chicons were produced from chicory roots that grown for 120days and then stored for over 120days at $2^{\circ}C$ and 90% of RH conditions. To produce chicon, chicory root was forced at $18^{\circ}C$ for 22days with suppling the nutrient solution ($KNO_30.54g{\cdot}L^{-1}$, $Ca(NO_3)_2\;1.02g{\cdot}L^{-1}$, $MgSO_4\;0.36g{\cdot}L^{-1}$, $KH_2PO_4\;0.21g{\cdot}L^{-1}$, $K_2SO_4\;0.10g{\cdot}L^{-1}$, pH 7.0). Chicons produced from 6 different chicory cultivars packed with $25{\mu}m$ ceramic film and stored for 25days at $8^{\circ}C$. The fresh weight of chicon in MAP was maintained to 99.5% of pre-storage weight. The fresh weight of 'Redoria Red' was lowest in all cultivars, and that of Chuncheon region cultivated treatment was lower than Pyeongchang treatment. The $CO_2$ and $O_2$ concentration in chicon MAP were 2% and $10{\sim}17%$. There were not significantly different among cultivars and between regions, although 'Redoria Red' cultivar showed highest $CO_2$ and lowest $O_2$ concentrations. The ethylene concentration in chicon MAP was $1.0{\mu}{\iota}{\cdot}{\iota}^{-1}$ and also didn't show any significant difference among all treatments. Chicon detoriorated visual quality with appearing russet spotting that result from ethylene gas. The visual quality of 'Redoria Red' cultivar decreased faster than the other cultivars. 'Metafora', 'Focus', and 'Kibora' maintained higher firmness of their leaf than the others, and the firmness was higher grown in Pyeongchang region cultivated treatments than in Chuncheon region.

This research was aimed to establish rapid analysis technique for the determination of nitrate ($NO_3{^-}$) concentration in the leaves of paprika, which has key role for the stable vegetative and reproductive growth. Leaf petiole and blade sap of two paprika cultivars ('Raon red' and 'Raon yellow') were used for the determination of $NO_3{^-}$ concentration, separately using rapid detection kit (RQ-flex) and spectroscopy quantification methods. In addition, two paprika cultivars namely, 'Nicole' and 'TP2001' were used to determine the status of $NO_3{^-}$ concentration in leaf of each fruiting group. $NO_3{^-}$ concentration in leaf blade sap and the content in leaf showed significant correlation ($R^2=0.8628$), analysed by RQ-flex and spectroscopy methods, respectively. Furthermore, leaf petiole sap and the content in leaf also showed significant correlation ($R^2=0.6734$) but the relationship was poor compared to leaf blade sap and the leaf content. $NO_3{^-}$ concentration in petiole sap decreased in all the cultivars from early to late fruiting group. The higher concentration in the lower leaves and the continuous decrease towards the upper leaves in the both years were found through the analysis of $NO_3{^-}$ concentration in different leaf position. In addition, daily short-term fluctuation of $NO_3{^-}$ in petiole sap could be rapidly monitored. These results showed that long-term or short-term monitoring by test strip-based rapid analysis technique might be useful tool for the diagnosis of nutritional status for the stable of nutritional management in paprika.
Some preliminary studies were conducted to find out whether the levee-burning could justifiable for the suppression of insect pests, particularly the smaller brown planthopper (Laodelphax striatellus F.). Density surveys on pests and their enemies (mostly spiders) were carried out upto the mid May at an experimental paddy field located in Suwon after of it's levee $(72\times1m)$ was burned on Feb. 20, 1987. Results were discussed in relation to density recovering of both pests and their possible enemies (spiders) and summarized as below. Not a single individual of any pest or enemy was found from the levee upto sometime after the levee-burning. Grasses started to grow more vigorously in burned ares than in unburned upto about 60 days after the burning. And densities of both pest and enemies grew higher in burned areas than in unburned from about 75 days after the burning (in Early may). It is suspected that all individuals of pests and enemies fond from the burned areas could have immigrated from the surrounding areas. If levee-burning was carried out in much wider areas, much longer time would be needed to recover the density of both pests and enemies to the center region of the burning. Wingless spiders would require even longer time than winged pest species to re-establish in the center region of the widely burned field. Pirata subpiraticus, the most abundant spider species in Korean paddy fields, starts to move about and searches for food at above $9^{\circ}C$ which is somewhat lower than the critical temperature for the pest species. Thus P. subpiraticus would require more food than other pest species early in the spring, and therefore, it would have lower probability to survive than pest species particularly in burned areas. Experiments for pest suppression with levee-burning would better be carried on in much wider areas, and its justification seems to be discussed after man other disciplines related to both pests and their natural enemies were throughly studied together with their density surveys. However, according to the present point of vie, the opinion that levee-burning is helpful for controlling pests which over winter on levee areas could not be justifiable.
The insect Diplosis mori Yokoyama is causing extensive destruction of mulberry trees in Korea with a resultant loss in silk production. This study was made to determine an effective method of control. Methods and Materials Used Preliminary studies were made to determine more exactly the life cycle of the insect. Based on this information, various control measures were tested, including the use of spray methods with BHC and control of larvae by tilling. Results Obtained 1. Life cycle studies (a) In the Suwon area, this-insect has 5 generations per year. The first starts in the later part of June and the final cycle ends in the later part of September. (b) The adult insects appear about 7: 00-8: 00 P.M. and live for 2-5 days. Females live in longer periods than the male. (c) Larvae lives inside the second and third stipules (A. B.) before mulberry leaf development. They cause extensive damage to the leaves at the point where they are attached to the stem. (d) Weather conditions considerably affect the life cycle. The pupa particularly are affected and not be able to change into the moth stage when there is a long period of no rain. (e) Larvae are large......0.3 to 2.0mm......and are milky-white immediately after hatching but turn to pinkish as the worm matures. The matured worm has a jumping ability up to 15-20cm. The worm burrows into the ground 1.5 to 3.0 cm before changing into the pupal stage. (f) The pupal stage usually lasts 7-8 days, in summer weather conditions and the pupa is surrounded with a coarse cocoon. (g) These insects, as a general rule, overwinter as pupae but sometimes as larvae. 2. Control measures (a) BHC dust applied on the ground seem most effective. It should be done 4-5 days after the worm has burrowed into the ground. For this control, it is recommended that 6kg of a 2% formation Tanbo(l0ares) be used. (b) For the effective spraying against the fly, it is recommended that a formulation of liquid BHC spray terials be used at the rate of 400-600 liters per Tanbo. (c) Tillage methods which provide a cover of soil 5cm or more in depth above infested areas will effect-maively prevent the emergence of the fly from the pupal stage. 3. Conclusions Methods of control against Diplosis mori Yokoyama can be tied more closely to the life cycle of the insect with more effective results. Further studies are needed to complete information on possible controls during or after hibernation. Economic studies on the cost of these control measures are also needed.

The purpose of this study is to clarify the effects of Home Economics instruction using motivation(ARCS) strategy on the learning motivation and academic attitude toward the subject. To accomplish the purpose, teaching-learning plan using motivation(ARCS) strategy was developed and the subjects for this study were 155 End grade male students randomly chosen from four classes at a middle school in Incheon Metropolitan City. In the 5th period instruction about 'utilization of resources and environment' unit, 76 students of two classes as an experimental group received the Home Economics instruction using motivation(ARCS) strategy, while 79 students of two classes as a comparative group took lecture type instruction. The results of this study were as the follows 1. Home Economics instruction using motivation(ARCS) strategy was more effective than the lecture type instruction to improve learning motivation and positive change in academic attitude toward Home Economics subject. 2. Home Economics instruction using motivation(ARCS) strategy was effective to improving learning motivation regardless of their levels of students prior learning motivation and learning achievement. 3. Home Economics instruction using motivation(ARCS) strategy was effective to positive change in academic attitude toward Home Economics subject regardless of their levels of students Prior learning achievement and at the aspect of prior motivation to learn, the high level students were more effective than the low level students. 4. According to responses of students and teacher for Home Economics instruction using motivation(ARCS) strategy, it was effective to improving active participation and interest for Home Economics instruction.
'Daebak', a new cultivar of Grifola frondosa, was bred by mating two monokaryotic strains isolated from 'F14309' and 'GMGF44062' at the Mushroom Research Institute, Gyonggi-Do ARES in 2017. The optimum temperature for mycelial growth of 'Daebak' was $25^{\circ}C$ on PDA medium. In bottle cultivation, the culture period of 'Daebak' was 57 days, which was 2 days shorter than that of 'Cham' (control). The pinheading rate of 'Daebak' was 98.4%, which was 24.8% higher than that of 'Cham' and its CV (Coefficient of variation) was 0.6%, 5.3% lower than that of 'Cham'. Regarding the growth characteristics of 'Daebak', the diameter and thickness of the pileus were 27.7 mm and 1.73 mm, respectively, and the diameter and height of the fruiting bodies cluster were 132 mm and 87.2 mm, respectively. The pileus was thinner but the fruiting bodies cluster was larger than that of 'Cham'. Fruiting bodies weighed 139 g per 1,100 ml bottle of 'Daebak', which was 28% higher than that for 'Cham', with a CV of 2.5%, which was 6.2% lower than that of 'Cham'. The yield per 10,000 bottles (used for cultivation) of 'Daebak' was 1,376 kg, 70% higher than that of 'Cham', with a CV of 3.0% that was 11.5% lower than that of 'Cham'. With respect to physical characteristics, the strength and brittleness of the fruiting body of 'Daebak' was less than that of 'Cham'. When considering the period available for sale, the shelf life of 'Daebak' was 42 days, which was 6 days longer than that of 'Cham'.
The fast expansion of super supermarket(SSM) in Korean retail industries has attracted serious social attentions and some types of regulations to slow down its growth are prepared. However, the regulations are hardly justified because they attempt to establish entry barriers which are not recommendable economic policy. Accordingly, the regulations should be justified at least on the basis of social and political causes. The study interprets the social and political causes as the effects of entry of SSM on trading ares where SSM is located. The study is distinguished from the past studies which focused only on intertype and intratype competition between retailers Another goal of the study is to complement the weakness of past studies and provide additional information to settle the issues. More closely, the study investigates the relationships between the changes in sales of convenience stores, which may be a surrogate measure of the viability of a local economy, and the changes in the composition of business types within 500m radius of a SSM. Further, the study investigates the effects of the establishment of SSM and the retail sales index on the sales of convenience stores. The study analyzed the panel data and adopts Swamy's random coefficient models. The results show that the effects of the establishment of SSM on the sales of convenience stores are not statistically significant. The relationship between the change in the portion of restaurants among the local business and the change in the sales of convenience stores is positive. On the other hand the relationship between the change in the portion of retailers in the composition of local businesses and the change in the sales of convenience stores is negative. In conclusion, even though any negative effects of the establishments of SSM on local economies are expected, as long as other types business especially restaurant businesses fill the space left by retailers, the net effect on the local economy may not be signification or even positive.
The purpose of this study is to examine the increasing number of unregistered manufacturing plants and related problems, and to recommend alternative solutions to the problems. Data are obtained from a field survey of randomly selected small scale manufacturing plants in Seoul and its suburban cities. A total number or respondents are 533, and 416 of them are unregistered plants. The Capital Regional Planning has had a goal during last three decades to lead a balanced regional economic development by restriction manufacturing plants in the Capital Region and by encouraging them in other regions in the nation. It was 1984 when a comprehensive planning was established to achieve this goal. Sets of various regulations, by-laws and codes have been implemented to regulate manu-facturing activities in the Capital Region to achieve the goal. The region is divided into three sub-regions, and a different degree of regulations is applied to each sub-region. Only a certain types of industries are allowed in a particular sub-region. For instance, a plant manufacturing high-technology products could be allowed in the most urbanized sub-region. All manu-facturing plant in the Capital Region which has ares size of larger than 200"\;"$m^2$ is compulsory to register to the local government office. In practice, however, it is not common or sometimes almost impossible to get approval for many applicant manufacturers because of strict regulations. There have been increasing number of plants in the Capital Region during last several decades, despite the strict regulations. Many of those newly established plants are without formal registration at the local administration office. howerver. These are so called 'unregisterd' plants. Surveyed data and many government official data show that many of unregistered plants have been established in recent years. which indicate that current regulations are no longer effective. The number of unregistered plants are increasing tin the Capital Region because of many locational advantages in the region for plants, particularly those in small scale. Unregistered plants are the source of many problems, such as local water pollution or noise pollution in residential areas. There are also many administration problems, bed\cause they are not registered. The central government has attempted to cure the problems of unregistered plants. For example, the government allowed a unregistered plant to remain at present site for three ydars, if it met certain conditions in three years. However, this program was unsuccessful because many of those plants were not able to meet the concitions. Three times the government renewed the term for those which did not meet conditions since 1989, but it was afraid to be without success. There are many evidences that current policies to control manufacturing plants are not effective. The Capital Region must face mounting problems if ploicies are not reformed soon. This study suggests that the policy of the Capital Regional Planning has to be reoriented to provide more favorable policies for manufacturing plants in the Capital Region than current regulations which is aimed to restrict manufacturing activities. It is time to improve many existing problems in the region through reforms and of current regulations to foster unregistered plants. This study also proposes many smaller-area sub-divisions instead of current three large area sub-regions which is too broad to apply single kind of regulation, or codes. Flexible regulations and codes can be applied to such a small-area sub-divivisions based on location and industrial characteristics of the individual sub-divisions. It is necessary to provide decent industrial environment in the Capital Region, which is best equipped to provide many favorable industrial locational factors in the nation, thus this nation can be further prepared to compete in an inter-national market at an era of globalization in manufacturing.
Demand is increasing for new functional and health food such as natually colored or flavored rices. Shinongheugchal, Shinmyeongheugchal, colored glutinous rice, were breed as new variety in Jeollabuk-do ARES. Shinongheugchal and Shinmyeongheugchal are medium to late maturing cultivars and higher than Heugnambyeo in term of C3G content.
