ZnS substrates with excellent transmittance in the mid-infrared region ($3-5{\mu}m$) were prepared using hot pressing instead of conventional chemical vapor deposition (CVD). Diamond-like carbon(DLC) was coated on either one or both sides of the ZnS substrates to improve their mechanical properties and transmittance. More specifically DLC was coated using CVD with an Ar and $C_2H_2$ mixed gas, and Ge was used as the bonding layer. During CVD, the bias voltage was fixed to 500 V and analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), nanoindenter, scanning electron microscope and energy dispersive spectrometry. Results of hardness analysis using the nanoindenter, showed that DLC coating increased from 5.9 to 17.7 GPa after deposition. The FT-IR spectroscopy results showed that, in the mid-infrared region ($3-5{\mu}m$), the average transmittance of the samples with DLC coating on one and both sides increased by approximately 6% and approximately 11.2% respectively. In conclusion, the DLC coating improved the durability and transmittance of the ZnS substrates.
Steel tire cords were subjected to plasma polymerization coating of acetylene in order to enhance the adhesion to rubber compounds. Plasma polymerization coating was varied to plasma polymerization coating of acetylene, argon plasma etching+plasma polymerization, or argon plasma. etching+plasma polymerization with Ar carrier gas. Adhesion was evaluated via TCAT samples and compared to those with brass coated tire cord. For durability study, plasma polymer cooled tire cords were aged in lab atmosphere for 1, 3, 5, 10 or 15 days, while TCAT specimens prepared with plasma polymer coated tire cords were aged in distilled water, 10% NaCl solution or $100^{\circ}C$ oven for 1, 2, 3 or 4 weeks. After testing, failure surfaces were analyzed with SEM/EDX. Among the treatments, the highest adhesion was obtained by Ar etching+acetylene plasma. polymerization coating with Ar carrier gas, providing almost same pull-out force as the brass coated tire cords. Upon the aging of the tire cords in the lab atmosphere, brass coated tire cords provided better adhesion than plasma polymer coated tire cords, while the TCAT samples with plasma polymer coated tire cords exhibited similar or slightly superior durability to those with brass coated tire cords.

The goal of this study is to investigate a metal cladding that contains SiC composites as a protective layer and analysis the characteristics of the specimens on high temperature oxidation To make SiC composites, the current process needs a high temperature (about $1100^{\circ}C$) for the infiltration of fixing materials such as SiC. To improve this situation, we need a low temperature process. In this study, we developed a low temperature process for making SiC composites on the metal layer, and we have made two kinds: cladding with protective SiC composites made by polycarbosilane(PCS), and a PCS filling method using supercritical carbon dioxide. A corrosion test at $1200^{\circ}C$ in a mixed steam and Ar atmosphere was performed on these specimens. The result show that the cladding with protective SiC composites have excellent oxidation suprression rates. This study can be said to have developed new metal cladding with enhanced durability by using SiC composite as protective films of metal cladding instead of simple coating film.

The anti-reflective anti-static (ARAS) optical film is designed using absorbent materials such as ITO, $TiN_xW_y$, Ag by Essential Macleod program. [air ${\mid}TiN_xW_y{\mid}SiO_2{\mid}$ glass] two layer shows wide-band AR coating in the wavelength range of 450~700 nm. The reflectivity, transmittance of this coating are below 0.5%, about 75%, respectively. [air $SiO_2{\mid}TiO_2{\mid}SiO_2{\mid}$, ITO glass] layer can adjust reflectance of below 0.5% with above 97% transmittance. In the [air ${\mid}SiO_2{\mid}TiO_2{\mid}SiO_2{\mid}$ Ag glass] layer, the transmission can be controlled at above 96% with reflectance of 1~2%.

Theoretical analyses have been tried to design high power and stable operating SLD at 1.55${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ wavelength range which is the lowest absorption wavelength in optical fiber. The materials of active layer and SCH layer were chosen as conventional In1-xGaxAsyPl-y quaternary composition systems. From the transverse mode and the lateral mode analyses of waveguide, the optical power distributions and the optical confinement factor have been studied for single-mode high power operation. According to these analyses, it was calculated the composition and the thickness of SCH layer to obtain the maximum optical confinement factor. In order to obtain low values of the reflectivity, we used the window region and the lateral tilted angle between tile active region and window region. And the reflectivity of SLD was calculated with the gaussian beam approximation and mode analysis. From these researches, it was confirmed for several results to fabricate the efficient and stable SLD. In case of using $1.3\mum$, InGaAsP SCH layer, the layer thickness was obtained $0.08\mum$, to get the maximum optical confinement factor. Using $0.2\mum$, active layer thickness and $0.08\mum$, SCH layer thickness, the window region length is about $100\mum$ without An coating, $10\mum$ in 1% AR coating to obtain about 10-4 reflectivity. When the tilted angle is about $10~15^{\circ}$, the reflectivity is about 10-3. From these results, if the window region length and tilted angle were controlled appropriately in given device structure, it was confirmed that it is possible to fabricate the stable SLD without AR coating analytically.

($Ti_{ 1-x}$$Al_{ x}$)N has been deposited on high speed steel (HSS) substrate using PECVD from the gas mixture of $TiC1_4$, $AlC1_4$, $NH_3$, $H_2$, and Ar. The correlation between the microstructure and the mechanical properties was investigated. ($Ti_{1-x}$$Al_{ x}$)N showed single phase NaCl-structure up to X=0.87, while a mixed phase of NaCl Type (Ti, Al) N and wurtzite structure AlN was observed for 0.87$Ti_{1-x}$ $Al_{x}$ )N became by degrees as increasing X, which made the hardness of the coating higher by Al addition. When the coating was composed of a mixed phase, however, the hardness decreased abruptly due to the effect of soft AlN phase. The wear volume of the coatings could be obtained as the concentration of the coating was varied, and the relation between the wear volume and hardness or the adhesion strength was discussed.

This paper shows an antireflection coating design skill for utilization the thin-film silicon solar cell in the future. The reflectivity of each index profile previously suggested as linear, cubic and quintic function has been calculated and compared. Each index profile is applied to the antireflection coating consisting of 6 layers with 180nm thickness. Also we suggest the graded index profile and compare it's reflectivity to the linear, cubic and quintic's ones. As a results we find the reflectivity generally decreases as the order goes to higher. However the reflectivity in the graded index profile shows the higher(lower) value than ones in the linear, cubic and quintic especially in the shorter(longer) wavelength range from 500 nm to below 700 nm(above 700 nm to 800 nm). Therefore we find that the graded index profile structure could be applied for the better antireflection coating design scheme especially for optical device and optical filter in the range of from deep red to infrared.

Atmospheric plasma technology was utilized in order to modify surface characteristics of base paper for coating. Argon(Ar) and oxygen(O2) gases were used. It was found that contact angle of a water droplet was decreased with increasing voltage during plasma treatment, meaning that the hydrophilicity of paper surface was increased. On the other hand, the physical properties like roughness and optical properties such as gloss, brightness and opacity were not influenced by the plasma treatment. In conclusion, atmospheric plasma technology can be utilized to control hydrophilicity of paper surface without affecting physical properties of the paper.

As technology advances, there is a demand for development of hard, solid lubricant coating. (Ti,Cr)N-$MoS_2$, films were deposited on SKD 11 tool steel substrate by co-deposition of $MoS_2$, with (Ti,Cr)N using a D.C. magnetron sputtering process. The influence of the $N_2/Ar$ gas ratio, the deposition temperature, the amount of $MoS_2$ in the films, and the bias voltage on the mechanical and the structural properties of the films were investigated. Wear tests were performed on the films deposited in various conditions.
