  • Android applications are inherently vulnerable to a repackaging attack such that malicious codes are easily inserted into an application and then resigned by the attacker. These days, it occurs often that such private or individual information is leaked. In principle, all Android applications are composed of user defined methods and APIs. As well as accessing to resources on platform, APIs play a role as a practical functional feature, and user defined methods play a role as a feature by using APIs. In this paper we propose a scheme to analyze sensitive APIs mostly used in malicious applications in terms of how malicious applications operate and which API they use. Based on the characteristics of target APIs, we accumulate the knowledge on such APIs using a machine learning scheme based on Naive Bayes algorithm. Resulting from the learned results, we are able to provide fine-grained numeric score on the degree of vulnerabilities of mobile applications. In doing so, we expect the proposed scheme will help mobile application developers identify the security level of applications in advance.

  • We took the nationwide survey of three main honeybee diseases, European foulbrood (EFB; Melissococcus pluton), chalk brood (CB; Ascosphera apis), and nosema (Nosema spp.) in 2001 and 2002 from South Korea. The number of infected apiaries with EFB and CB examined from 21 apiaries were 9 and 13, respectively. The average percentages of infectedcolonies in apiaries where EFB and CB occurred were 7.4% and 12.8%. (omitted)

  • As the trend of the Web is changing toward 'Web 2.0', OpenAPIs, Web 2.0's core technology, are used in many web sites. In the past, services in websites are used in its own, but recently it is possible to use services in other websites by using OpenAPI. In u-GIS many vendors also can provide combined service by using OpenAPI. There are already lots of OpenAPIs and the numer of OpenAPI increases very fast. So it is difficult to find a service that we want to use, and also difficult to find services for mashup. In this paper, we developed retrieval methods for OpenAPIs and mashup capable services based on similarity. First we define the integrated service information model to cover various protocols of OpenAPI, then developed a retrieval methods based on it. By implementing system according these methods by using relational database and JSP, we prove that the system can provide an ranked result sets based on similarity, OpenAPI's integration retrieval results and mashup capable service retrieval results.

  • Most insect-resistant LMOs have been produced by applying Cry and Vip3Aa proteins. Vip3Aa protein is activated during the vegetative stage of Bacillus thuringensis (Bt) and the inhibitory activity of the Vip3Aa protein against pathogenic attacks from lepidopteran insect species is well known. However, a risk assessment of the Vip3Aa protein compared to the Cry protein has not been conducted in South Korea. This study demonstrates a possible risk assessment method for Vip3Aa protein against honeybees (Apis mellifera). For the risk assessment of the protein, we purified the recombinant Vip3Aa protein in Escherichia coli. The survival rate and symptoms of general intoxication of 4 months honeybees were measured after Vip3Aa exposure. These results indicated that there was no significant difference in the survival rate and the symptom between Vip3Aa and the control buffer. In this study, we established standard methods of Vip3Aa protein purification and oral adult toxicity test using A. mellifera as an LMO risk assessment technique for preserving the natural ecosystem of South Korea.

  • We propose a mash-up system for searching herb, which can search the herbal information in oriental medicine fields using the various Open APIs. We in particular developed and opened two Open APIs which enable to search papers and projects in oriental medicine fields with the general Open APIs. These Open APIs can share and provide the expert knowledge in oriental medicine fields. The information for a herb in oriental medicine fields has various names and descriptions according to their sources unlike other fields. Thus, it is hard to get the results using one or two keywords such as the general search engines. To solve this problem, we in this paper propose a way to provide the more exact and extensive search results using the herb ontology with one hundred herbal information in oriental medicine fields.

  • The Asian honeybee, Apis cerana, is a native honeybee species in Korea which is important in agriculture for pollination and honey production. For better understanding of the physiology of A. cerana, high-throughput Illumina transcriptome sequencing was performed to analyze the gene expression profiles of queen, worker, and larva. A total of 219,799,682 clean reads corresponding to 22.2 Gb of nucleotide sequences was obtained from the whole body total RNA samples. The Apis mellifera reference mRNA sequence database was used to measure the gene expression level with Bowtie2 and eXpress software, and the Illumina short reads were then mapped to 11,459 out of 11,736 A. mellifera reference genes. Total of 9,221 genes with FPKM value greater than 5 of each sample group were subjected to eggNOG with BLASTX for gene ontology analysis. The differential gene expression between queen and worker, and worker and larva were analyzed to screen the overexpressed genes in each sample group. In the queen and worker sample group, total of 1,766 genes were differentially expressed with 887 and 879 genes overexpressed over two folds in queen and worker, respectively. In the worker and larva sample group, total of 1,410 genes were differentially expressed with 1,009 and 401 genes overexpressed over two folds in worker and larva, respectively.

  • Objectives: Mellitine, a major component of bee venom (BV, Apis mellifera), is more active against gram positive than gram negative bacteria. Moreover, BV has been reported to have multiple effects, including antibacterial, antivirus, and anti-inflammation effects, in various types of cells. In addition, wasp venom has been reported to have antibacterial properties. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antibacterial activity of BV against selected gram positive and gram negative bacterial strains of medical importance. Methods: This investigation was set up to evaluate the antibacterial activity of BV against six grams positive and gram negative bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), Salmonella typhimurium, Escherichia coli (E. coli) O157:H7, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Burkholderia mallei and Burkholderia pseudomallei. Three concentrations of crude BV and standard antibiotic (gentamicin) disks as positive controls were tested by using the disc diffusion method. Results: BV was found to have a significant antibacterial effect against E. coli, S. aureus, and Salmonella typhyimurium in all three concentrations tested. However, BV had no noticeable effect on other tested bacteria for any of the three doses tested. Conclusion: The results of the current study indicate that BV inhibits the growth and survival of bacterial strains and that BV can be used as a complementary antimicrobial agent against pathogenic bacteria. BV lacked the effective proteins necessary for it to exhibit antibacterial activity for some specific strains while being very effective against other specific strains. Thus, one may conclude, that Apis mellifera venom may have a specific mechanism that allows it to have an antibacterial effect on certain susceptible bacteria, but that mechanism is not well understood.

  • The majority of next generation information systems will be working on portable mobile devices such as smartphones. REST Open API web services have quickly become popular among mobile application development. The use of REST web services are not only growing in popularity but totally changing the way of mobile applications development. This is because REST web services could be used in application development as a form of building blocks, which is completely independent, compatible, to any platforms. With this strength, REST web services encourage third party application to build add-on functionality. This research proposes the use of REST web service to replace the use of socket APIs into major internet communication APIs. To this end, this paper also provide performance evaluation of the REST web services compared to the conventional socket APIs, focusing on scalability by analytical and experimental evaluations. Finally, we summarize the possibility whether REST Open API web services have enough performance as future major internet communication primitive APIs.
