Status Report of the Korean ALMA project and JCMT participation

  • 한국천문연구원은 2014년 8월부터 동아시아 파트너로서 ALMA 국제 공동 사업에 참여하였고, 2015년 3월부터 동아시아천문대의 일원으로 JCMT 망원경 운영을 시작하였다. 이를 개기로 한국 천문학자들은 ALMA와 JCMT 망원경을 본격적으로 연구에 이용하고 있다. 최근에 한국천문학자들에게 ALMA 관측 자료가 전달되었고, 그 일부 자료의 분석 결과가 논문으로 편찬되었다. 또한 7개의 JCMT Large 프로그램에 많은 한국 천문학자들이 참여하여 좋은 연구 결과가 나오고 있다. 이런 시점에서 한국천문학계에 ALMA와 JCMT를 이용한 한국 연구자들의 연구결과를 알리고, 사용자의 저변을 확대하기 위해서 이 특별 세션이 기획되었다. 본 발표는 그 동안의 한국 ALMA 프로젝트와 JCMT 참여 성과에 대한 개괄적인 소개를 할 예정이다.

Current Status of the Korean ALMA Project

  • Korea officially joined the ALMA (Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array) project on August 17, 2014. Korea was allowed to apply for the Cycle 2 call-for-proposal before joining the project. Korea submitted 17 proposals, and 4 of them were selected as high-priority. The fund of an 11-year Korean ALMA project in the KASI (Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute) was approved. The project team formulated an ARC (ALMA Regional Center) node at the KASI and already started its supporting activities for the Korean Astronomical Society. The team also set up a future development plan for ASTE (Atacama Submillimeter Telescope Experiment) and ALMA. A couple of engineers are now doing concept design of a multi-beam receiver system for the ASTE, Because of the ALMA participation, Korea could also access open-use time of ASTE and Mopra telescopes organized by Japan. As of this writing, EACOA (East Asia Core Observatories Association) is now under discussion on making an organization called "East Asian Observatory" and the possible operation of JCMT (James Clerk Maxwell Telescope). I will briefly mention the future prospect of these activities.

Extragalactic Science with ALMA: First Results & Future Perspectives

  • As the most sensitive radio interferometer ever operated in millimeter/submillimeter, the ALMA has opened a new window on extragalactic astronomy. Its superior resolution and sensitivity allow the community to study the gas kinematics of distant galaxies as well as the molecular gas properties of nearby galaxies in GMC scale, already in its early commissioning stage. Also the ALMA provides a great tool to probe the dust contents of extragalactic sources at all redshifts, which is important in understanding of galaxy formation and evolution history over cosmic time. In this presentation, I will review the ALMA capabilities with the emphasis on the extragalactic science. I will also revisit some highlights from the early science and discuss future perspectives.

Astrochemistry in the ALMA era

  • Astrochemistry is a tool to understand the physical processes occurring in the interstellar medium in a variety of astrophysical environments. Many ALMA sciences are utilizing our knowledge of astrochemistry, which has grown explosively in recent years thanks to sensitive observations and laboratory work. We will review the ALMA sciences employing astrochemistry and discuss how astrochemistry can serve to answer some unique astrophysical questions.

  • Chemotype composition of Fusarium graminearum strains, isolated from durum wheat kernels from naturally FHB infected fields in Northern and Central Italy, was investigated by multiplex PCR. The different climatic and environmental conditions of the two examined areas separated by the Apennines affected the composition of chemotypes. 15Ac-DON chemotype was predominant in both the sub areas. Nivalneol chemotype was more frequent in the warmer sub area.

Transcatheter Mitral Valve Implantation in Open Heart Surgery: An Off-Label Technique

  • Extensive mitral annulus calcifications are considered a contraindication for valve surgery. We describe the case of a 76-year-old female with severe mitral and aortic stenosis associated with extensive calcifications of the heart. The patient underwent an open mitroaortic valve replacement using transcatheter aortic valve implantation with an Edwards SAPIEN XT valve (Edwards Lifesciences Corp., Irvine, CA, USA) in the mitral position. The aortic valve was replaced using a stentless valve prosthesis (LivaNova S OLO; LivaNova PLC, London, UK). Postoperative echocardiography showed that the prosthetic valve was in the correct position and there were no paravalvular leaks. A bailout open transcatheter valve implantation can be considered a safe and effective option in selected cases with an extensively calcified mitral valve.

Constraining Dust Properties of high-z Lyα Emitters using the ALMA Archive

  • 고적색편이의 $Ly{\alpha}$ 방출은하($Ly{\alpha}$ emitter; LAE)는 UV 연속복사에 비해 강한 $Ly{\alpha}$ 방출선을 내는 천체로서 매우 젊고, 낮은 금속함량을 가진 원시은하이다. LAE의 강한 $Ly{\alpha}$ 방출선은 먼지가 매우 적기 때문에 소광이 거의 없이 은하에서 탈출하거나, 먼지의 국지적인 분포 때문에 나타나는 것으로 추정된다. 그러나 기존 전파관측 시설의 낮은 감도 때문에 LAE의 먼지성분은 잘 알려져 있지 않다. 우리는 Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA)에 의해 우연히 관측된 LAE을 찾아 먼지연속복사를 직접적으로 검출하는 시도를 해 보았다. COSMOS와 ECDFS 영역에서 발견된 약 954개의 LAE 중에서 총 38개가 ALMA로 관측된 영역에 우연히 위치한다는 것을 발견하였고, 이 중 18개의 LAE에 대해 ALMA 관측영상을 모두 더하는 방법(image stacking)을 이용하여, LAE에서 방출되는 먼지연속복사의 상한선을 결정하였다: S(0.50-0.67mm) < $63.2{\mu}Jy$, S(0.21-0.38mm) < $46.7{\mu}Jy$. 본 연구에서는 비록 직접적인 검출에는 실패하였으나, 주어진 LAE 샘플에 대한 ALMA archive 검색, 원자료 다운로드, 영상 만들기, 이미지 합침 과정을 자동화하는 Python 파이프라인을 완성하였다. 이 자동화된 과정을 이용하면, 앞으로 ALMA archive가 늘어남에 따라 감도가 높아진 실험을 쉽게 반복할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.

Results of KVN and ALMA observations toward WX Psc

  • We present the results of KVN and ALMA observations toward WX Psc (IRC+10011) which is a long-period variable OH/IR star. The SiO masers of v=1 and v=2, J=5-4, and the SiO thermal emission of v=0, J=5-4 were observed together with H2O v2=1 (232.6 GHz) and continuum emission at ALMA Band 6 in October 2017 (Cycle 5). This observation aims to investigate the physical association between the inner and outer parts of the circumstellar envelope (CSE) swept by the stellar winds, which is very crucial to understand the asymmetric outward motions developed during the evolutionary phases from the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars to the planetary nebulae (PNe). The strong SiO maser features and thermal emissions are detected together with the continuum emission in ALMA observation, which imply the elongated morphology of the CSE of WX Psc. While the spatial resolution of about 20 mas in ALMA observation cannot clearly resolve the detailed characteristics of the inner part of the CSE, the Korean VLBI Network (KVN) observations show the spatial distributions of the v=1 J=1-0, J=2-1, J=3-2 SiO masers emitted from the inner regions of CSE, which are the complementary to the ALMA results. Therefore, we expect these results reveal how the bipolar features of the 22 GHz H2O maser are connected to the innermost region of CSE through the dust condensation region, which is closely related to the enormous mass ejection of the evolved stars.

The Implementation of Multi-Port UTOPIA Level2 Controller for Interworking ATM Interface Module and MPLS Interface Module (MPLS모듈과 ATM모듈과의 Cell Mode 인터페이스를 위한 Multi-Port지원 UTOPIA-L2 Controller구현)

  • In the ACE2000 MPLS system, MPLS Interface Module(MIM) is composed of an ATM Interface Module and a HFMA performing a packet forwarding. In the MIM, the HFMA RSAR receive cells from the Physical layer and reassemble the cells. And the IP Lookup controller perform a packet forwarding after packet classification. Forwarded packet is segmented into cells in the HFMA TSAR and transfer to the ALMA for the transmission to an ATM cell switch. When the MIM make use of an ATM Interface Module, it directly connect the ALMA with a PHY layer using the UTOPIA Level2 interface. Then, an ALMA performs Master Mode. Also, the HFMA TSAR performs the Master Mode in the MIM. Therefore, the UTOPIA-L2 Controller of the Slave Mode require for interfacing between an ALMA and a HFHA TSAR. In this paper, we implement the architecture and cell control mechanism for the UTOPIA-L2 Controller supporting Multi-ports.

Role of Metcalfa pruinosa as a Vector for Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae

  • After 20 years of steady increase, kiwifruit industry faced a severe arrest due to the pandemic spread of the bacterial canker, caused by Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae (Psa). The bacterium penetrates the host plant primarily via natural openings or wounds, and its spread is mainly mediated by atmospheric events and cultural activities. Since the role of sucking insects as vectors of bacterial pathogens is widely documented, we investigated the ability of Metcalfa pruinosa Say (1830), one of the most common kiwifruit pests, to transmit Psa to healthy plants in laboratory conditions. Psa could be isolated both from insects feeding over experimentally inoculated plants, and from insects captured in Psa-infected orchards. Furthermore, insects were able to transmit Psa from experimentally inoculated plants to healthy ones. In conclusion, the control of M. pruinosa is recommended in the framework of protection strategies against Psa.
