External exposure specific analysis for radiation worker in reuse of containment building for Kori Unit 1

  • The containment building Kori Unit 1 may require sequential steps for full decommissioning. This study assumes that the containment building is to be used as an auxiliary building that handles nuclear power systems and materials during decommissioning before conversion into a greenfield. Through the derivation of guidelines and dose evaluation, it was confirmed whether the radiation workers were satisfied with the ALARA decision. The specific modeling of the external radiation exposure was performed based on the facility investigation procedures. The external radiation specific derived concentration guideline levels (DCGLs) for radiation workers in containment building were obtained using the RESRAD-BUILD code and were applied to the VISIPLAN 3D ALARA Planning Tool code to calculate the working dose and check worker safety. The derivation of site-specific and realistic DCGLs and dose evaluation via 3D modeling can contribute to the scenario development for the decommission and remediation of containment building.

Development of the Numerical Guide for Cost-Benefit Analysis of Occupational Radiation Exposure In the Korean Next Generation Reactor

  • The specific purpose of this study is to develop the numerical guide for the cost-benefit analysis of ORE ($/person-Sv reduction) to meet the criterion of ALARA in the design stage of the KNGR. In deriving the guide, the risk factor which is defined by the risk to unit collective radiation exposure dose (deaths/person-Sv) and the monetary value of human life ($/death) are required. The risk factor has been estimated from various clinical data accumulated for a number of years and continuously modified. And the monetary value of human life is usually quantified using the human capital approach. In this study, the risk to radiation exposure perceived by a group of people is investigated through an extensive poll survey conducted among university students in order to modify the existing risk factor for radiation exposure. And in evaluating the monetary value of human life, the QOL factor is introduced in order to incorporate the degree of public welfare or quality of life. As a result of study, a value within the range of 151, 000~172, 000 dollars per person-Sv reduction is recommended as the appropriate interim numerical guide for cost-benefit analysis of ORE to meet the criterion of ALARA in the design stage of the KNGR. A poll survey was also conducted in order to see whether the public acceptance cost of nuclear power should be incorporated in developing the guide, and the result of study shooed that such a cost does not need to be considered.

A Study on the Construction of Cutting Scenario for Kori Unit 1 Bio-shield considering ALARA

  • Nuclear power plants are subjected to various processes during decommissioning, including cutting, decontamination, disposal, and treatment. The cutting of massive bio-shields is a significant step in the decommissioning process. Cutting is performed near the target structure, and during this process, workers are exposed to potential radioactive elements. However, studies considering worker exposure management during such cutting operations are limited. Furthermore, dismantling a nuclear power plant under certain circumstances may result in the unnecessary radiation exposure of workers and an increase in secondary waste generation. In this study, a cutting scenario was formulated considering the bio-shield as a representative structure. The specifications of a standard South Korean radioactive waste disposal drum were used as the basic conditions. Additionally, we explored the hot-to-cold and cold-to-hot methods, with and without the application of polishing during decontamination. For evaluating various scenarios, different cutting time points up to 30 years after permanent shutdown were considered, and cutting speeds of 1-10nullm2/h were applied to account for the variability and uncertainty attributable to the design output and specifications. The obtained results provide fundamental guidelines for establishing cutting methods suitable for large structures.

CT 검사별 노출되는 유효선량과 생애 암 귀속 위험도 평가 (Assessment of the Effective Dose to the Human Body and Estimation of Lifetime Attributable Risk by CT Examination)

  • 국민의 의료수준 향상으로 CT 검사건수는 매년 증가되고 있는 추세이며, 이에 따라 연간 의료 방사선에 의한 피폭선량 또한 증가되고 있다. 이에 본 연구에서는 CT 부위별 검사 시 노출되는 인체의 유효선량을 평가하고, 이로 인한 생애 암 귀속 위험도를 추정하고자 한다. 첫 번째로, CT 진단참고수준 가이드라인에서 제시하는 부위 중 5가지를 선정하였으며, CT 장치를 통해 각 검사 부위별로 노출되는 인체의 유효선량을 평가하였다. 두 번째로, 동일한 조건 내 ALARA-CT 프로그램을 이용하여 인체 장기 및 유효선량을 산정하였으며, 국내 DRL 수준과 비교하여 검사 프로토콜에 대한 적정성을 평가하였다. 세 번째로, CT 검사 시 노출되는 유효선량에 의한 생애 암 귀속 위험도(LAR)을 추정하였다. 그 결과, 검사 중 복부 다중시기 검사 시 21.18 mSv로 가장 높은 유효선량을 나타내었으며, 복부검사를 제외한 나머지 검사에서는 DRL 이하의 선량수준을 나타내었다. 동일한 조건 내 선량계산 프로그램을 이용한 유효선량 평가 결과, 각 검사별로 약 1.1 ~ 1.9배 이상 높은 결과를 나타내었으며, 장기선량의 경우 검사 부위에 근접한 장기일수록 산란선에 의해 높은 영향을 나타내었다. CT 검사 시 성인의 생애 암 귀속 위험도의 경우, 연령이 증가함에 따라 점차적으로 감소되는 양상을 보였으며, 성별에 따라 다소 상이한 결과를 나타내었다.

방사선 조사선량의 최소화를 위한 생성적 적대 신경망을 활용한 복부 엑스선 영상 최적화 연구 (Optimization of Abdominal X-ray Images using Generative Adversarial Network to Realize Minimized Radiation Dose)

  • 본 연구는 높은 관전압과 낮은 관전류로 인한 복부 영상 노이즈 발생을 BSRGAN (Deep Bline Image Super-Resolution Generative Adversarial)기법으로 보정하고, 최소화된 방사선량을 가진 촬영 조건을 제시하는 것을 목표로 하였다. 먼저 각 촬영 조건에 따른 입사표면 선량(entrance surface doses, ESD)을 측정하였고, 해당 촬영 조건들의 복부 영상을 획득한 후 그 획득한 모든 복부 영상들은 BSRGAN 기법을 통해 재구성하였다. 영상 분석방법으로는 복부의 기준 촬영 조건인 80 kVp, 320 mA의 영상과 비교 분석하였고, 그 방법으로는 평균제곱오차(mean squared error, MSE), 최대 신호 대 잡음비(peak signal-to-noise ratio, PSNR), 그리고 구조적 유사도 지수 측정(structural similarity index measure, SSIM)을 사용하였다. 또한, BSRGAN 기법으로 재구성된 복부 영상효과를 검증하기 위해 절편 신호강도 분석은 실행되었다. MSE가 가장 낮은 조사조건은 90 kVp, 125 mA와 100 kVp, 100 mA (약 0.285)이었고, PSNR은 37.694와 SSIM은 0.999로 나타났다. 그 촬영 조건들은 ESD를 약 52 ~ 53%를 감소시켰다. 게다가, 최적화된 조건들의 신호 강도의 변화는 기준 복부 영상보다 오히려 감소하였다. 이 결과는 방사선량을 크게 줄임과 동시에 기준 복부 영상과 유사한 영상을 획득할 수 있음을 의미하며, 이는 방사선방호의 원리인 ALARA 개념을 충분히 반영할 수 있음을 시사한다.

  • Although the diagnostic information provided by radiographs may be of definite benefit to the patients, the radiographic examination does carry the potential for harm from exposure to ionizing radiation. Therefore we should try to expose radiation as low as reasonably achievable and to give diagnostic information to patients as much as possible. All of dentists should have competence in radiation protection. I wish to deal with what we should do for the optimization of radiation protection in dental clinic.
