  • The point sources in the Bright Source Catalogue of the AKARI Far-Infrared Surveyor (FIS) were classified based on their FIR and mid-IR fluxes and colours into young stellar object (YSO) and extragalactic source types using a Quadratic Discriminant Analysis method (QDA) and Support Vector Machines (SVM). The reliability of the selection of YSO candidates is high, and the number of known YSO candidates were increased significantly, that we demonstrate in the case of the nearby open cluster IC348. Our results show that we can separate galactic and extragalactic AKARI point sources in the multidimensioal space of FIR fluxes and colours with high reliability, however, differentiating among the extragalactic sub-types needs further information.

  • AKARI performed about 10,000 spectroscopic observations with the Infrared Camera (IRC) during its mission phase. These IRC observations provide unique spectroscopic data at near- and mid-infrared wavelengths for studies of the next few decades because of its high sensitivity and unique wavelength coverage. In this paper, we present the current status of the activity for improving the IRC spectroscopic data reduction process, including the toolkit and related data packages, and also discuss the goal of this project.

  • We have been working on data processing and calibration of AKARI/IRC images from pointed observations. As of September 2014, a data package for each pointing only contains raw data and quick-look data, so that users have to process them using the toolkit by themselves. We plan to change this situation and to provide science-ready data sets, which are easy-to-use for non-AKARI experts. For Phase 1&2, we have updated dark and flat calibrations, and also the toolkit itself to produce images more reliable and easier to use. A new data package includes fully calibrated images with WCS information. We released it for about 4000 pointings at the end of March 2015.

  • We present the initial results of rest-frame optical spectroscopy of quasars at 3 < z < 5 from the AKARI space telescope mission program QSONG (Quasar Spectroscopic Observation with NIR Grism). QSONG is an AKARI phase-3 mission program which utilizes the unique capability of spectroscopy at 2.5-5 microns, and is adequate for detecting redshifted Balmer lines. We focus on how to overcome the noise induced from instrumental degradation, and report our measurements of supermassive black hole (SMBH) masses with well calibrated optical mass estimators.

  • The importance of multiwavelength astronomical surveys is discussed in the context of galaxy evolution. The AKARI Deep Field South (ADF-S) is a new, well placed survey field that is already the subject of studies at a wide range of wavelengths. A number of ADF-S observational programmes are discussed and the prospects for the ADF-S as a future resource for extragalactic astronomy is explored.

  • A unique ensemble of datasets is available for the AKARI North Ecliptic Pole (NEP) field, having being observed virtually across the whole electromagnetic spectrum. We have undertaken a study of radio sources in the NEP field and in particular radio-loud AGN. We present preliminary results concerning the identification of these radio-loud AGN using a host of different selection criteria. We aim to study the host galaxies of these systems within the current framework of galaxy evolution and the role that AGN play in it.

  • We have collected dozens of mid-infrared spectra showing UIR bands from diffuse Galactic emitting regions with the AKARI's Infrared Camera (IRC) onboard AKARI, as part of the ISMGN Mission Program. The datasets cover various directions in the inner Galactic Plane ($|l|$ < 70 deg), in the outer Galactic Plane ($|l|$ > 70 deg), and in the off-Plane ($|b|$ > 2 deg). The variations in the UIR band ratios are examined in terms of the radiation environments judged from the far-infrared ($50-170{\mu}m$) spectral energy distribution (SED) made with AKARI/FIS All Sky Survey data at each slit position where mid-IR spectra were obtained. We have found that the band ratios of $6.2{\mu}m/11.2{\mu}m$ and $7.7{\mu}m/11.2{\mu}m$ toward the inner Galaxy are systematically higher than those toward the outer Galaxy and off the Galactic plane. Likely causes of the variations in properties of UIR bands in diffuse emission on a Galactic scale are discussed in this paper.
