  • In this study, the effects of oxide layer formed on the wear tracks of TiN coated silicon wafer on friction and wear characteristics were investigated. Silicon wafer was used for the substrate of coated disk specimens, which were prepared by depositing TiN coating with $1{\mu}m$ in coating thickness. AISI 52100 steel ball was used for the counterpart. The tests were performed both in air for forming oxide layer on the wear track and in nitrogen to avoid oxidation. This paper reports characterization of the oxide layer effects on friction and wear characteristics using X-ray diffraction (XRD). Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and sliding tests.

  • Effects of sliding speed, applied load, counterpart radius and thickness of PMMA (Poly Methyl Methacrylate) coating layers on their dry sliding frictional and wear behavior were investigated. Sliding wear tests were carried out using a pin-on-disk wear tester. The PMMA layer was coated on Si wafer by a sol-gel technique with two different thicknesses, $1.5{\mu}m\;and\;0.8{\mu}m$. AISI 52100 bearing steel balls were used as a counterpart of the PMMA coating during the wear. Normal applied load and sliding speed were varied. Wear mechanisms were investigated by examining worn surfaces by an SEM. Under most of sliding test conditions, the thicker layer with the thickness of $1.5{\mu}m$ showed lower fiction coefficient than the thinner layer. Effects of sliding speed and counterpart's radius on the frictional behavior were varied depending on the thickness of the coating layer.

  • This study aims at investigating the wear behavior of thermally sprayed Ni-based self-flux alloy coatings against different counterparts. Ni-based self-flux alloy powders were flame-sprayed onto a carbon steel substrate and then heat-treated at temperature of $1000^{\circ}C$. Dry sliding wear tests were performed using the sliding speeds of 0.2 and 0.8 m/s and the applied loads of 5 and 20 N. AISI 52100, $Al_2O_3$, $Si_3N_4$ and $ZrO_2$ balls were used as counterpart materials. Wear behavior of Ni-based self-flux alloy coatings against different counterparts were studied using a scanning electron microscope(SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). It was revealed that wear behavior of Ni-based self-flux alloy coatings were much influenced by counterpart materials.

  • The effect of silver particle introduction on the rolling friction of AISI 52100 steel pairs has been investigated. Experiments ware performed in dry conditions using a thrust bearing-type rolling test rig at a load range of 12-960 N and a sliding velocity range of 8-785 mm/sec with pure (99.99%) silver particles. Results showed that introduced silver particles formed transfer layers, which protected the virgin bearing surfaces and resulted in the low lolling friction. By changing the quantity of silver particles, transitions in the rolling friction were found. Results also showed that the variations in normal load and rolling speed also affected the rolling friction behavior. Analyses of SEM and EPMA showed that the formation the transfer layer was mainly governed by the silver particle quantity, normal load and rolling speed, and this resulted in the different behavior of rolling friction. In this study, it was found that the low and stable rolling friction was resulted from the, shakedown phenomena occurred at the silver transfer layer.

  • New materials widely used for automobile related industry, aircraft, space development area are mostly high hardness materials. The hardness value of some hardened materials is over HRC45 and machining of this hardened materials is called as hard turning. Hard turning has its advantage on processing flexibility, cycle time and tool cost reduction. Also this process obtains high efficiency in processing and precise surface roughness through application of the CBN tools. In hard turning process with CBN tool, surface integrity is the important factor for considering the design of machine part and component under high stress and load conditions. A purpose of this study is to analyze optimal condition in hard turning process of AISI 52100 steel (HRC62) with high CBN and low CBN on turning characteristics, tool wear mechanism comparison and surface integrity.

  • The cutting characteristics of hardened steel(AISI 52100) by PCBN tools is investigated with respect to cutting force, workpiece surface roughness and tool flank wear by the vision system. Hard Owning is carried out with various cutting conditions; spindle rotational speed, depth of cut and feed rate. Backpropagation neural networks(BPNs) are used for detection of tool wear. The input vectors of neural network comprise of spindle rotational speed, feed rates, vision flank wear, and thrust force signals. The output is the tool wear state which is either usable or failure. The detection of the abnormal states using BPNs achieves $96.8\%$ reliability even when the spindle rotational speed and feedrate are changed.

  • This paper presents the results of the repeated sliding tests to determine the wear-life of TiN coated AISI 52100 bearing balls deposited by PVD method and to show the wear mechanisms of those. The sliding tests were carried out using a ball-on-disk tribometer under ambient conditions. The coefficient of friction, wear volume and the cycles to failures of TiN coated bearing balls were measured with different normal loads and roughness of lower specimens. On the wear-life diagram, the normal loads and the cycles to failure showed the good linear relation on log-log coordinate. With a decreasing normal load, the diagram showed that the wear-limits, at which the coated bearing balls survived more than 4000cycles were under 0.1N of the normal load.

  • During sling wear of a ferrous metal, a surface layer is formed. Its microstructure, constituting phases, and mechanical property are different from those of the original wearing material. Since wear occurs at the layer, it is important to characterize the layer and understand how wear rate changes with different layers. Various layers are formed depending on external wear conditions such as load, sliding speed, counterpart material, and environmental conditions. In this research, sliding wear tests of pure iron were carried out against two different counterparts (AISI 52100 bearing steel and $Al_2O_3$) in the air and in an inert Ar gas atmosphere. Pure iron was employed to exclude other effects from secondary phases in steel on the wear. Wear tests were performed at room temperature. Worn surfaces, wear debris, and cross-sections were analyzed after the test. It was found that these two different counterparts and environments produced diverse layers, resulting in significant changes in wear rate. Against the bearing steel, pure iron showed higher wear rate in an Ar atmosphere due to severe adhesion than that in the air. On the contrary, the iron showed much higher wear rate in the air against $Al_2O_3$. Different layers and wear rates were analyzed and discussed by oxidation, severe plastic deformation, and adhesion at wearing surfaces.

  • Recently, many of the current development in surface modification engineering are focused on multilayered coatings. Multilayered coatings have the potential to improve the tribological and corrosion properties of tools and components. By using cathodic arc deposition, $WC-Ti_{1-x}Al_xN$ multilayers were deposited on steel substrates. Wear tests of four multiplayer coatings were performed using a ball-on-disc configuration with a linear sliding speed of 0.1m/s, 5N load. The tests were carried out at room temperature in airby employing AISI 52100 steel ball ($H_v=848N$) of 11mm in diameter. Electrochemical tests were performed using the potentiodynamic and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements. The surface morphology and topography of the wear scars of tribo-element and the corroded specimen have been determined by using scanning electron spectroscopy (SEM). Also, wear mechanism was determined by using SEM coupled with EDS. Results have showed an improved wear resistance and corrosion resistance of the $WC-Ti_{1-x}Al_xN$ coatings.
