  • This study was worked out to obtain fundamental data needed for developing a continuous type dryer. The drying process in a cross-flow type continuous dryer was expressed as partial differential equations, and a drying simulation model for predicting rice moisture content, rice temperature, drying air absolute humidity, drying air temperature was developed by using the finite difference method. To validate the performance of the drying simulation model, a prototype continuous dryer was constructed in this study. The size of the test dryer was one-tenth to that of a commercial continuous dryer. The difference in the outlet rice moisture content between the predicted values and the measured values was within 0.5%, that of outlet rice temperature was below $3^{\circ}C$, that of drying air temperature in drying bed was within $8^{\circ}C$ and that of relative humidity of outlet drying air was big because of the different measuring point. In addition, a drying simulation model for a actual size continuous dryer with double flow was developed in this study. This drying simulation model included the rice mixing effect in the middle of drying length. The difference of outlet moisture content between the predicted and the measured values showed below 0.5% in this study.

  • A two degree-of-freedom model for the bogie and car body of an EMU(Electrical Multiple Unit) was implemented on the basis of the experimental data which was actually measured during the running test of an EMU. The air spring of the EMU was modeled using Nishimura's air spring model to accommodate viscoelastic characteristics. Numerical simulation for the variation of th e design parameters of the suspension system shows that reduction of the stiffness of the air spring by decreasing the internal pressure of the air tank or increasing the size of the auxiliary tank can reduce the bounce of the car body within the stability range of the suspension system.

  • An experimental study was carried out in order to investigate the effect of shock waves on the supersonic hydrogen-air jet flames stabilized in the Mach 2.5 model scramjet combustor. This experiment was the first reacting flow experiment interacting with shock waves. Two identical $10^{\cire}$ wedges were mounted on the diverging sidewalls of the combustor in order to produce oblique shock waves that interacted with the flame. Schlieren visualization pictures, wall static pressures, and combustion efficiency at two different air stagnation temperatures were measured and compared to corresponding flames without shock wave-flame interaction. It was observed that shock waves significantly altered the shape of supersonic jet flames, but had different effects on combustion efficiency depending on air temperatures. At the higher air stagnation temperature and higher fuel flow rates, combustion of efficiency showed a better result.

  • In this study, axial vibration analysis has been conducted on a propulsion and lift shafting system for an air cushion vehicle using ANSYS code. The shafting system is totally flexible multi-elements system including wood composite material of air propeller. aluminum alloy of lift fan and thin walled shaft with flexible coupling. The analysis calculated the axial natural frequencies and mode shapes of the shafting system taking into account an equivalent mass-elastic model for shafting system as well as the three-dimensional models for propeller blade and fan impeller. Such a flexible shafting system has very intricate vibrating characteristics and especially, axial natural frequencies of flexible components such as propeller blade and impeller of lift fan can be lower to the extent that causes a resonance in the range of operating revolution. The results for axial vibration analysis are presented and compared with the results of axial vibration test for lift fan conducted during Sea Trial.

  • The need for management of tunnel air quality is imminent considering the rapid increase of number and span of tunnels in Korea. To investigate spatial distribution of $CO_2$ within tunnels, $CO_2$ were measured and model simulations were performed in Namsan 1 tunnel. Results show that $CO_2$ concentrations were 250 ppm to 400 ppm higher in the exit than tunnel entrance. Also, $CO_2$ concentrations were 200 ppm to 300 ppm lower inside no ventilating vehicle than in the tunnel. Both experimental and model simulation results show that spatial distribution and concentration gradient of air pollutant inside tunnel are highly dependent on traffic density.

  • We propose a control scheme to control the indoor zone temperature via variable air volume (VAV) unit. To control the room temperature, state space model of the conditioned zone which is partitioned into nine artificial sectional regions is derived. The nonlinearity of the damper motion and actuator are considered for the practical use in the state space system description. The temperature control of the room temperature is performed by manipulating the degree of openness of the damper in relation to the local room temperature and the supplied air flow rate. In general, since a local temperature in the conditioned zone is measured, it is required to estimate the temperature values in each regions for the precise temperature control. We thus design a state observer to estimate the regional temperature, and use these values in the controller. The overall control system consists of the state observer based state feedback with the integral control. We compared the control results of the proposed scheme with those of cascade proportional and integral (PI) control, and showed that the scheme achieved precise control of the conditioned system.

  • 1D-numerical analysis of the network algorithm with the orifice equation for the relationship between pressure difference and flowrate has been mostly used to analyse leakage flow at the gap. In this study, a 3D-numerical method applying momentum loss model to the gap region in the computational domain is represented to reflect effectively the effect of leakage flow by determining the proportion of pressure difference to air passage velocity. While the 3D-numerical method is verified through the computation of the two compartments model, the numerical analysis of the stack effect in a building stairway is performed. As the temperature of air outside drops, the pressure in the upper stairway and leakage flowrate through the gap in the door rise. The change of gap area does not have an effect on pressure in the stairway for the analysis conditions.

  • Successful energy conservation and good indcfor air quality (IAQ) are highly dependent on ventilation system. Air filtration is a primary solution of indoor air control strategies in terms of reducing energy consumption and improving ihdoor air quality. A conventional system with bypass filter, as it is called variable-air-volume/bypass filtration system (VAV/BPFS), is a variation of the conventional variable air volume (VAV) systems, which is designed to eliminate indoor air pollutant and to save energy. Bypass filtration system equipped with a high-efficiency particulate filter and carbon absorbent provides additional cleaned air into indoor environments and maintain good IAQ for human health. The objectives of this research were to compare the relative total decay rate of indoor air pollutant concentrations, and to develop a mathematical model simulating the performance of VAV/BPFS. All experiments were performed in chamber under the controlled conditions. The specific conclusions of this research are: 1. The VAV/BPFS system is more efficient than the VAV system in removing indoor air pollutant concentration. The total decay rates of aerosol, and total volatile organic compound (TVOC) for the VAV/BPFS system were higher than those of the conventional VAV system. 2. IAQ model predictions of each pollutant agree closely with the measured values. 3. According to IAQ model evaluation, reduction of outdoor supply air results in decreased dilution removal rate and on increased bypass filtration removal rate with the VAV/BPFS. As a results, we recommends the VAV/BPFS as an alternative to conventional VAV systems.

  • Photochemical reactions are important for the diurnal variation of the concentrations of air pollutants in the urban atmosphere. A photochemical reaction model was developed, which includes in terms of the effective chemical reaction. Various experimental results were introduced to the construction of model. To verify the applicability of the model, the simulated results were compared with those observed. By comparing the simulated results with those observed, it was shown that those two are in good agreement qualitatively. As a result, the photochemical reaction model which has been developed in this study is found to be useful for the prediction of concentrations of air pollutants in the atmosphere.
