It has been widely documented that stress conditions in aquatic ecosystems could trigger the release of stress hormone (dopamine) in fishes. Such hormone could attract pathogens (such as Aeromonas hydrophila) to initiate its infection in fishes. The major focus of this study was to investigate the effect of the catecholamine derived stress hormone (dopamine) on the motility and hemolytic activity associated with the virulence of A. hydrophila ATCC AH-1N, the causative agent of Motile Aeromonas Septicemia (MAS). The density of bacterial cells used in this study was adjusted at 106 cells/ml. The results showed that dopamine increased swimming motility of A. hydrophila ATCC AH-1N and was proportional to both dopamine hormone concentration and the incubation period. Dopamine concentration of 100 µM in the medium resulted in the highest increment of swimming ability of A. hydrophila ATCC AH-1N. The dopamine hormone was also found to affect the hemolytic activity of A. hydrophila ATCC AH-1N. The optimum hemolytic activity of the pathogen was found at 50 µM dopamine concentration in the medium, and this hemolytic activity was found to decrease when the concentration of dopamine at greater than 50 µM. It can be concluded from this study that dopamine hormone increased the motility and hemolysis capability, as well as the growth rate of A. hydrophila, and hence increased its virulence.

Exposure of 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) causes a variety of biological and toxicology effects, most of which are mediated by aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR). The ligand-bound AhR as a heterodimer with AhR nuclear translocator (ARNT) binds to its specific DNA recognition site, the dioxin-responsive element (DRE), and it results in increased transcription of CYP1A1 gene. Retinoic acid (RA) regulates the transcription of various genes for several essential functions through binding to two classes of nuclear receptors, the retinoic acid receptor (RAR) and retinoid X receptor (RXR). $ZrV_{0.1}Mn_{0.7}Ni_{1.2}$ alloy ingot (bulk alloy) made by the arc melting was found to be consisting of mostly of $ZrV_{0.2}Mn_{0.98}Ni_{1.04}$ matrix alloy and $ZrV_{0.01}Mn_{0.13}Ni_{1.2}$ 2nd phase alloy. The former alloy had the form of the C15 type Laves alloy structure and the latter one had the intermetallic compound structure of $Zr_9Ni_{11}$. In order to investigate the effect of these two phases on the electrochemical charge-discharge characteristics of bulk $ZrV_[0.1}Mn_0.7}Ni_{1.2}$ alloy, the matrix and the 2nd phase alloys were fabricated separately by arc melting method and their electrochemical characteristics were studied and compared with the bulk alloy. It was found that the discharge capacity was the lowest of 160 mAh/g in the 2nd phase alloy. The matrix alloy exhibited 200 mAh/g. Both were lower than that of the bulk alloy of 250 mAh/g. The matrix and the bulk alloys showed a similar properties in the activation stage, the high rate dischargeability and the self discharge characteristics. Also a signigicant capacity decrease was observed after activation in both alloys. Whereas the 2nd phase alloy showed the very different characteristics. This alloy was found to be difficult to activate. However the capacity was remained constant after the activation. Also the self discharge rate was seen to be better than those of the matrix and the bulk alloys.
n this study, the evaluation of performance of AORFB using anthraquinone derivative and TEMPO derivative as active materials in neutral supporting electrolyte with various membrane types was performed. Both anthraquinone derivative and TEMPO derivative showed high electron transfer rate (the difference between anodic and cathodic peak potential was 0.068 V) and the cell voltage is 1.17 V. The single cell test of the AORFB using 0.1 M active materials in 1 M KCl solution with using Nafion 212 membrane, which is commercial cation exchange membrane was performed, and the charge efficiency (CE) was 97% and voltage efficiency (VE) was 59%. In addition, the discharge capacity was $0.93Ah{\cdot}L^{-1}$ which is 35% of theoretical capacity ($2.68Ah{\cdot}L^{-1}$) at $4^{th}$ cycle and the capacity loss rate was $0.018Ah{\cdot}L^{-1}/cycle$ during 10 cycles. The single cell tests were performed with using Nafion 117 membrane and SELEMION CSO membrane. However, the results were more not good because of increased resistance because of thicker thickness of membrane and increased cross-over of active materials, respectively.
Eliminating the infecting bacteria of the root canal system and preventing reinfection must be the main objectives of all endodontic works. None of commercially available root canal sealers have the properties of desirable tissue compatibility and strong antibacterial activity. The purpose of this study is to develope an ideal root canal sealer using commercially available polyphosphate (polyP), Calgon, which is known to be antibacterial and safe. For the study. resin type AH26, zinc oxide eugenol type Tubli Seal. Ca(OH)$_2$ type Apexit as base sealers for polyP (0~3%) and para formaldehyde containing N2 as a control base were selected. Specimens (3$\times$4mm) of the sealers were prepared in a 37$^{\circ}C$ incubator for 3 and 10 days and their antibacterial activity against streptococci and black pigmented anaerobic rods was observed using an agar diffusion method. The result were as follows: 1. Among 3 day old root canal sealers. N2 as a positive control showed the strongest antibacterial effect. followed by AH26. Tubli Seal and. Apexit which barely showed antibacterial activity against the test bacteria. In contrast. 10 day old AH26 showed a greater antibacterial activity than 10 day old N2. 2. All sealer specimens showed a greater antibacterial activity against black pigmented anaerobic rods than streptococci. Three day old ones appeared to be more antibacterial than 10 day old ones except for Apexit. 3. As compared to N2, 3 day old AH26 demonstrated a similar antibacterial activity against black pig mented anaerobic rods but to a lesser extent to streptococci. Ten day old AH26 showed a greater antibacterial activity against black pigmented anaerobic rods than 10 day old N2. 4. As compared to AH26. Tubli Seal generally revealed a lower antibacterial activity but it showed a greater antibacterial activity aginst S. gordonii Challis. 5. Enhancement of antibacterial activity by polyP was more clearly observed when it was added to Ca(OH)$^{\circ}C$ based root canal sealers. Tubli Seal and N2. 6. The addition of polyP enhanced the antibacterial activity of 3 day old AH26 against S. gordonii G9B (16%) and Challis (29%), and P. gingivalis 2561 (24%) only. Moreover, polyP failed to increase antibacterial activity of 10 day old AH26 against the test strains but P. gingivalis A7A1 28(13%). 7. The addition of polyP increased the antibacterial effect of 3 day old Tubli Seal on several test bacteria including s. mutans GS 5 (50%). s. gordonii G9B (47%) and Challis (122%). and all the test strains of P. gingivalis (13~35%) except for 9 14K 1. The addition of polyP to 10 day old Tubli Seal increased antibacterial activity of the root canal sealer against most test strains. 8. 3 day old Apexit failed to show antibacterial activity. if any very little against S. mutans GS 5 and Pr. intermedia ATCC 49046. However. polyP increased its antibacterial activity by 50 and 69%, respectively. Increase of antibacterial activity of 10 day old Apexit by polyP was more clearly observed than that of 3 day old one.

Objectives: This study was performed to investigate the effects of two herbal medicines, Agastachis Herba and Lysimachiae Herba, on a cellular model of non-alcoholic fatty liver diseases (NFLDs). Methods: HepG2 cells were treated with palmitic acid and with various concentrations of Agastachis Herba (AH) or Lysimachiae Herba (LH) extract in water. The lipotoxicity was assessed using EZ-cytox, and the lipoapoptosis was assessed using cell death detection ELISA. Intracellular lipids were measured by oil red O staining. The efficacy of AH and LH on sterol regulatory element-binding transcription factor-1c (SREBP-1c), fatty acid synthase (FAS), and acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC) in HepG2 cells was measured by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Results: Both AH and LH extracts increased lipoapoptosis and decreased lipotoxicity and levels of SREBP-1c, ACC, and FAS (SREBP-1c, ACC, and FAS are factors in lipid synthesis). In the oil red O staining experiment, both extracts also reduced intracellular lipid accumulation; in this instance, LH's efficacy was superior to that of AH. Conclusions: According to the results, both AH and LH are likely to contribute to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, as both interfere with lipid synthesis.
The aromatic hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) is a ligand-activated transcription factor that mediates many of the biological and toxicological effects of 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD, dioxin) and related chemicals. The application of recombinant reporter plasmid such as the firefly luciferase gene has proven to be a very effective method to detect these chemicals. The bioassay system, CALUX, is sensitive in directly detecting AhR-agonists from a variety of environmental and biologic materials. However, responses of the AhR-dependent bioassays are dependent on the cell types used. Thus, we developed a sensitive bioassay using the recombinant mouse hepatoma cell (Hepa1c1c7) for the determination of dioxins. The recombinant cell line was stably transfected with firefly luciferase reporter gene (pGudLuc1.1). The transfected cells showed the highest induction of luciferase activity at 4.5 hr and a decrease beyond this time point. The system showed the highest sensitivity of detection ever reported. Upon TCDD exposure cells showed 2 fold increase at 10 pM and 7 fold increase at 100 pM, respectively. The passage number after the transfection played an important role in the sensitivity. The increase of passage number tended to increase the sensitivity of the cells up to 15. The media without phenol red showed a higher induction rate than with phenol red, suggesting the preferable use of phenol red-free media for the bioassay. Since each of the assays has unique characteristics that make them suitable for some screening applications and not others, development of sensitive bioanalytical methods based on a variety of cellular systems in a key to the successful determination of dioxins. The bioassay system developed in this study will contribute to further development of successful screening the AhR agonists among the environmental mixture. In addition, the rapid and sensitive nature of this cellular system can be applied as a valuable tool to screen the dioxin-like moieties among the prodrugs at the initial stage, thereby expediting the new drug discovery.
Bismuth is a promising anodic for Li-ion batteries (LIBs) due to its adequate operating voltage and high-volume capacity (3,765 mAh cm-3). Nevertheless, inevitable volume expansion during Bi alloy reactions leads to severe capacity loss and cell destruction. To address this, a complex of bismuth alloy nanoparticles (Bi@NC) embedded in an N doping-carbon coating is fabricated via a simple pyrolysis method. Nano-sized bismuth alloys can improve the reaction dynamics through a shortened Li+-ion diffusion path. In addition, the N-doped carbon coating effectively buffers the volume change of bismuth during the extended alloy/dealloy reaction with Li+ ions and maintains an effective conductive network. Based on the Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) showed high bismuth alloy loading (80.9 wt%) and maintained a high gravimetric capacity of 315 mAh g-1 up to 100 cycles with high volumetric capacity of 845.6 mAh cm-3.
New BV RI photometric observations of the contact binary AH Tau were performed with the 61 cm reflector and a 2K CCD camera at the Sobaeksan Optical Astronomy Observatory during seven nights from September to December, 2001. A total of 144 times of minima observed up to date, including three times of minima obtained from our observation, were analyzed. It is found that the orbital period of AH Tau has varied in a cyclic way superposed on a secular period decrease. The rate of the secular period decrease is calculated to be $1^s$ .04 per century, implying that a mass of about $3.8{\times}10^{-8}M{\odot}/yr$ from the more massive primary flows into the secondary if a conservative mass transfer is assumed. Assuming that the sinusoidal period variation is produced by a light-time effect due to an unseen third body, the resultant semi-amplitude, period, and eccentricity for the deduced light-time orbit are obtained as 35.4 years, 0.014 day and 0.52, respectively. The mass of the third-body is calculated as a tout $0.24M{\odot}$ when the third body is assumed to be coplanar with AH Tau system.
