  • Adsorptive removal of tetrahydrothiophene (THT) and tert-butylmercaptan (TBM) that were widely used sulfur odorants in pipeline natural gas was studied using various ion-exchanged NaY zeolites at ambient temperature and atmospheric pressure. In order to improve the adsorption ability, ion exchange was performed on NaY zeolites with alkali metal cations of $Li^+,\;Na^+,\;K^+$ and transition metal cations of $Cu^{2+},\;Ni^{2+},\;Co^{2+},\;Ag^+$. Among the adsorbents tested, Cu-NaY and Ag-NaY showed good adsorption capacities for THT and TBM. These good behaviors of removal of sulfur compound for Cu-NaY and Ag-NaY zeolites probably was influenced by their acidity. The adsorption capacity for THT and TBM on the best adsorbent Cu-NaY-0.5, which was ion exchanged with 0.5 M copper nitrate solution, was 1.85 and 0.78 mmol-S/g at breakthrough, respectively. It was the best sulfur capacity so far in removing organic sulfur compounds from fuel gas by adsorption on zeolites. While the desorption activation energy of TBM on the Cu-NaY-0.5 was higher than NaY zeolite, the difference of THT desorption activation energy between two zeolites was comparatively small.

  • The mine of our present concern is situated at Shim-ri, Gusan-myon, Changwon-gun, Kyongsang-namdo, with lattitude $128^{\circ}35^{\prime}{\sim}36^{\prime}N$ and longitude $35^{\circ}03^{\prime}{\sim}04^{\prime}E$. This mine has not been noticed until the intermittent geological survey for the ore deposits were initiated from September, 1967 till 1970. The main mineralized zones, No.1 and No.2 zones, were studied by the diamond drilling of 9 holes down to the total depth of 1,140m, and found to have ore reserves of Cu 1.99% ore, estimated to reach around $358,000{\frac{M}{T}}$ (proved $117,000{\frac{M}{T}}$, indicated $241,000{\frac{M}{T}}$), which triggered the new exploitation of this mine. Geological composition of the district near the mine is mainly from the andesite belonging to the Silla Series of Kyongsang System and the distribution is broadly spread. Ore deposits are the hydrothermal one, filling the shear zone formed alongside the andesite main joint. There are two stripes of copper bearing mineralized zone which are about 40~70 meters apart and parallel to each other, in addition to which two others are expected. The strike of the main mineralized zone lies at $N15^{\circ}{\sim}20^{\circ}W$, the dip at $60^{\circ}{\sim}70^{\circ}NE$. The principal components of the ore mineral are chalcopyrite, bornite and as secondary, cuprite, tenorite, azurite and malachite. Pyrite, magnetite, specular hematite, very little of galena, sphalerite, quartz, epidote, zoisite, chlorite and calcite are found as gangue mineral. Confirmed by the drilling, the main mineralized zone, No.1 zone, has the length of 320m, average width of 1.62m, Ag 26g/t, Cu 1.84% and the average width of the ore zone except the narrow barren andesite horse interposed in the mineralized zone is 1.32m with Ag 32g/t and Cu 2.26%. The mineralized zone No.2 is 340m long, 1.00m wide with Ag 30g/t and Cu 2.15%. Neglecting the barren andesite horse the width is 0.73m with Ag 42g/t and Cu 2.94%.

  • Membranes prepared from Vibrio natriegens oxidized both NADH and deamino-NADH as substrates. The maximum activity of the membrane-bound NADH oxidase was obtained at about pH 8.5 in the presence of 0.2 M NaCl, whereas that of the NADH:ubiquinone oxidoreductase was obtained at about pH 7.5 in the presence of 0.2 M NaCl. Electron transfer from NADH or deamino-NADH to ubiquinone-l or oxygen generated a considerable membrane potential (${\Delta}{\psi}$), which occurred even in the presence of $20{\mu}M$ carbonylcyanide m-chlorophenylhydrazone (CCCP). However, the ${\Delta}{\psi}$ was completely collapsed by the combined addition of $10{\mu}M$ CCCP and $20{\mu}M$ monensin. On the other hand, the activity of the NADH oxidase and the ${\Delta}{\psi}$ generated by the NADH oxidase system were inhibited by about $90\%$ with $10{\mu}M$ HQNO, whereas the activity of the NADH:ubiquinone oxidoreductase and the ${\Delta}{\psi}$ generated at the NADH:ubiquinone oxidoreductase segment were inhibited by about $60\%$. Interestingly, the activity of the NADH:ubiquinone oxidoreductase and the ${\Delta}{\psi}$ generated at the NADH:ubiquinone oxidoreductase segment were resistant to the respiratory chain inhibitors such as rotenone, capsaicin, and $AgNO_3$, and the activity of the NADH oxidase and the ${\Delta}{\psi}$ generated by the NADH oxidase system were very sensitive only to $AgNO_3$. It was concluded, therefore, that V. natriegens cells possess a $AgNO_3$-resistant respiratory $Na^+$ pump that is different from the $AgNO_3$-sensitive respiratory $Na^+$ pump of a marine bacterium, Vibrio alginolyticus.

  • The WO3/Ag/WO3 transparent thin films are fabricated by the RF magnetron sputtering. This has a transmittance of front and rear about 90% in the visible light range and surface resistance of 6.41Ω/□. In this paper, we analyzed the surface characteristics caused by the working pressure and O2 plasma surface treatment to apply a transparent electrode that was prepared to the laminated structure with other materials. The working pressure was changed in the WO3 film to 10mTorr, 7mTorr, and 5mTorr, it showed a lower than roughness of conventional ITO. In addition, by 55.5774 J/m2 at 5mTorr, it shows the hydrophobic property with lower process pressure. O2 plasma surface treatment was changed at the condisions of the RF power to 150W, 100W, and 50W and the process time to 240s, 180s, 120s, and 60s. The surface roughness are the maximum roughness(Rmax) 6.437nm and the average roughness(Rq) 0.827nm at RF power 150W, and the maximum roughness (Rmax) 6.880nm and the average roughness (Rq) 0.839nm at process time 240sec. It showed a lower value than the surface treatment. also about working pressure and process time is increased, it showed the hydrophobic.

  • These experiments were attempted to introduce rolC gene in the Petunia hybrida cv. Titan white by Agrobacterium mediated. The maximum frequency of shoot regeneration was obtained by 60% on MS medium containing 1.0 mg/L BA, 0.1 mg/L NAA, 200 mg/L kanamycin, 500 mg/L carbenicillin, 30 g/L sucrose, and 8 g/L agar. Kanamycin-resistant calli were selected from petunia leaf discs by cocultivation with Agrobacterium suspension cultures on MS medium. The addition of AgNO$_3$ and KMnO$_4$ in the medium increased the shoot regeneration by 31.3% from leaf disc as compared with non-treated leaf disc. Among clones exhibiting kanamycin resistance, only 3 clones were confirmed by southern hybridization analysis.

  • Forth microbial isolates out of 167 isolates from the soil of controlled cultivation areas inhibited mycelial growth of Rhizoctonia solani AG2-1 causing the strawberry bud rot in vitro. Among the isolates, Kr013 and Kr020 showed suppressive effect to R. solani AG2-1 on seedlings of chinese cabbage treated by root immersion, charcoal carrier granule and drenching on 1.0% infested soil in pot. Furthemore, the corresponding effect was also revealed when the charcoal carrier granule of the isolates were treated on the seedling of strawberry that were planted on the planting hole in pot. To examine the effects of biological control in green house, it had been tested the infection rates by using two different treatments. First, the strawberry runner were planted on the nursery soil mixed with 20% charcoal carrier granule of Kr013 and Kr020 isolate respectively, and grown for 20 days before transplanting. Then the young plants form the mother plant were separated and transplanted on the 1.0% infested soil. Another method was that the charcoal carrier of Kr013 and Kr020 isolates applied to planting hole of 1.0% infested soil just before transplanting. Then the young plants were grown for 20 days on the sterilized nursery soil before transplanting. From the results, the effects of biological control was significantly higher on former treatment (e.g. the infection rates were 7.3 and 5.7%, respectively) than on the latter treatment (e.g. the corresponding value were 16.7 and 15.7%, respectively). The antagonistic isolates of Kr013 and Kr020 were respectively identified as Pseudomonas cepacia with the similarity of 55.0% and 60.0% by using the Biolog GN Microplate system.

  • Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) is concerned with promoting oral infection due to its low antibacterial activity. To overcome this, the nanoparticles of Ag-MSN, nGO, and CNP were mixed with MMA liquid in a weight ratio of 0, 0.25, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0% compared to resin powder using Orthocryl from Dentarum, a calibration resin, and then instructed by the manufacturer. Accordingly, a specimen for calibration was prepared by mixing PMMA: MMA (1.2: 1) ratio, and physical properties of the calibration resin, antifungal experiments, and statistical analysis were performed. As a result of antibacterial experiments, the antibacterial properties of Ag-MSN increased. In nGO, the antibacterial adhesive effect increased hydrophilicity, not a change in surface roughness. The higher the CNP concentration, the higher the antibacterial activity. This suggests its potential usefulness as an antibacterial dental material for orthodontic devices and temporary restorations.

  • Characteristics of piezoelectric thick films prepared by screen printing method were investigated. The piezoelectric thick films were printed using Pb(Mg,Nb)O$_3$-Pb(Zr,Ti)O$_3$system. The lower electrodes were coated with various thickness of Ag-Pd by screen printing to investigate the effect as a diffusion barrier and deposited with Pt by sputtering on Ag-Pd. The ceramic paste was prepared by mixing powder and binder with various ratios using three roll miller. The fabricated thick films were burned out at 650$^{\circ}C$ and sintered at 950$^{\circ}C$ in the O$_2$condition for each 20, 60min after printing with 350mesh screen. The thickness of piezoelectric thick film was 15∼20 $\mu\textrm{m}$ and the Ag-Pd electrode acted as a diffusion barrier above 3 $\mu\textrm{m}$ thickness. When the lower electrode Ag-Pd was 6 $\mu\textrm{m}$ and the piezoelectric thick films were sintered by 2nd step (650$^{\circ}C$/20min and 950$^{\circ}C$/1h) using paste mixed Pb(Mg,Nb)O$_3$-Pb(Zr,Ti)O$_3$$.$ MnO$_2$+ Bi$_2$O$_3$. V$_2$O$\_$5/ and binder in the ratio of 70:30, the remnant polarization of thick film was 9.1 ${\mu}$C /cm$^2$.

  • Incidence of Rhizoctonia blight ranged from 22.2% to 100% in the golf courses at six geographical locations in Korea from 1989 to 1993. Rhizoctonia blight occurred more severly in southern area than in northern area. Fifty seven isolates of Rhizoctonia solani obtained from diseased parts of zoysiagrasses were grouped to AG2-2 by anastomosis test. Pathogenicity testes revealed that this pathogen was strongly pathogenic to Korean lawngrasses(Zoysia japonica, Z. matrella, Z. tenuifolia), but not pathogenic to creeping bentgrass(Agrostis palustris), bermuldagrass(Cynodon dactylon), Kentucky bluegrass(Poa pratensis), perennial ryegrass(Lolium prenne), and creeping red fescue(Festuca rubra subsp. rubra L.). The isolation frequency of R. solani AG2-2 fro sheaths of the infected plants was the highest by 91.67%, and that from stolons and roots was 11.13% and 5.63% respectively. The pathogen was not isolated from the leaves. Population density of R. solani in the lawn of large circular patch was highest on surface soils down to 1 cm deep with the value of 4.9$\times$104 (CFU/g soil), but below 1 cm population density decreased sharply down to 0.8~9.8$\times$103 (CFU/g soil). Horizontal distribution of propagules in turfgrass soil was higher in the margin than in center of patch, where the number of propagules was similar to these of healthy looking soils close to the margin of diseased patch. The meteorological factors influencing the outbreak of the disease were temperature, the number of rainy days and precipitation. Optimum temperature for disease development of Rhizoctonia blight in field was 20~22$^{\circ}C$, and that for hyphal growth of R. solani AG2-2 in vitro was 25~3$0^{\circ}C$. In Pusan area, Rhizoctonia blight first occurred in late April and rapidly developed in late June. The disease slightly decreased during July to August and developed again in late September in 1993. The monthly disease progress in Pusan area was similar to that in Kyeonggi province.

  • Infection by hepatitis B virus is one of the major health problems of this nation. HBsAg positive rates of general population and school children were known to be as about 8 percent and 3.9 to 5.9 percent respectively. To study the incidence rate of hepatitis B infection in school children of rural area, author had examined 475 school children of relatively isolated agricultural area for baseline prevalence of hepatitis B virus serologic markers and followed up 415 school children during 10 months to determined the frequency of serologic conversion. The major results are summarized as followings: 1) Among the 278 susceptible children who were followed up, 26 had seroconversion for HBsAg or Anti-HBs. Therefore, the cumulative incidence rate during 10 months is estimated 9.4%. 2) The incidence rate of hepatitis B infection tends to increase with age (6-9yrs: 3.2%, 10-14yrs: 9.5%, 15-17yrs: 18.9%), and the incidence rate in male (13.0%) was higher than in female (5.7%). 3) The incidence rates of hepatitis B virus infection were not different statistically among three economic classes (The rates of lower, middle and higher class were 11.8%, 7.1% and 10.5%.). 4) The incidence rates of hepatitis B virus infection were not different statistically between visitors and non-visitors of clinic or hospital, dental clinic, persons received IV and not received IV, and persons with familial history and without familial history of liver diseases. Therefore all of these factors were not identified as risk factor of hepatitis B virus infection. And the transmissibility within the class of school was not recognized, too. 5) Among the 25 children who were HBsAg positive when enrolled, 15 (60%) were still HBsAg positive, who were identified as chronic carrier 15 of 415 school children were chronic carriers, then chronic carrier rate was estimated 3.6%, and there was no difference between sexes. 6) Of 38 children who had been Anti-HBs positive when enrolled, 5 (13.2%) lost Anti-HBs. Therefore, the loss rate of Anti-HBs per year is estimated to be 15.8%.
