  • Due to its outstanding feature, FRP is used widely for the material of strengthening in USA and Japan recently, and there have been active researches in korea as well. This study evaluates the behavior and ductility of each structure experiment using EBR and NSMR strengthening method with different AFRP types and strengthening area. There was the biggest increase in the load when the strengthening area is expanded showing a brittle aspect, and eventually the immature failure occurred. With regard to the methods, it is found that the NSMR method is more effective to strengthen the structure, and the uneven surface causes ductile failure.

  • Recently, the need for strengthening reinforced concrete and prestressed concrete structure is increasing, particularly when there is an increase in load requirements, a change in use, a degradation problem, or some design/construction defects. Therefore, use of composite materials for structural repair presents several advantages and has been investigated all over the world. In this paper, the reinforced concrete slabs with epoxy - bonded AFRP sheed were experimentally investigated. Experimental data on strength. stiffness, material strain, deflection and mode of failure of strengthened slabs were obtained, and comparisons between the different flexural reinforcing schemes and reinforced concrete slabs without AFRP sheets were made It can be concluded that flexural strength of RC slabs strengthened with AFRP has increased, and that ductility of strengthened slabs has decreased.

  • Strengthening reinforced concrete (RC) beams with openings by using aramid fiber reinforcement polymers (AFRP) on the beams' surfaces offers a useful solution for upgrading concrete structures to carry heavy loads. This paper presents a repairing technique of the AFRP sheets that effectively strengthens RC beams, controls both the failure modes and the stress distribution around the beam chords and enhances the serviceability (deflection produced under working loads be sufficiently small and cracking be controlled) of pre-cracked RC beams with openings. To investigate the possible damage that was caused by the service load and to simulate the structure behavior in the site, a comprehensive experimental study was performed. Two unstrengthened control beams, four beams that were pre-cracked before the application of the AFRP sheets and one beam that was strengthened without pre-cracking were tested. Cracking was first induced, followed by repair using various orientations of AFRP sheets, and then the beams were tested to failure. This load was kept constant during the strengthening process. The results show that both the preexisting damage level and the FRP orientation have a significant effect on strengthening effectiveness and failure mode. All of the strengthened specimens exhibited higher capacities with capacity enhancements ranging from 21.8 to 66.4%, and the crack width reduced by 25.6-82.7% at failure load compared to the control beam. Finally, the authors present a comparison between the experimental results and the predictions using the ACI 440.2R-08 guidelines.

  • In the shear strengthening with FRP sheets, beams are wrapped around the webs and tension face of critical shear span by fiber sheets. The shear strength of RC beam strengthened with FRP sheets must be calculated based on the effective strain that can be developed in the FRP sheets at ultimate stage because the final failure modes of beams are governed by premature debonding of FRP sheet due to the limitation of bonded length by beam depth. An experimental study is carried out to evaluate the shear strengthening effect of AFRP or GFRP sheets with respect to shear reinforcement ratio of rebar. From the test results, it was found that the additional shear strength provided by GFRP or AFRP can be estimated by $p_w{\cdot}f_w$ based on the maximum effective strain of FRP sheet $4,000m{\mu}$ proposed by ACI 440 committee.

  • Although retrofitting and strengthening reinforced concrete (RC) columns by wrapping fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites have become a popular technique in civil engineering, the study on reinforced high-strength concrete (HSC) columns is still not sufficient. The objective of these companion papers is to investigate the mechanical properties of reinforced HSC square columns confined by aramid FRP (AFRP) jackets under concentric compressive loading. In the part I of these companion papers, an experiment was conducted on 54 confined RC specimens and nine unconfined plain specimens, the considered parameters were the concrete strength, the thickness of AFRP jackets, and the form of AFRP wrapping. The experimental process and results are presented in detail. Subsequently, some discussions on the confinement effect, failure modes, strength, and ductility of the columns are carried out.

  • As means to increase the use of concrete with recycled coarse aggregate (RCA), this study aims to evaluate the applicability for flexural strengthening of reinforced concrete beam with high-strength concretes and RCA on which FRP plates, used for repair and strengthening of old and low-durability reinforced concrete structures, is applied. In order to increase the adhesive force of epoxy and FRP plate, FRP plate was installed according to Near-Surface-Mounted (NSM) method. 12 specimens were manufactured using substitution rate of RCA (30%), concrete strengths (40MPa, 60MPa), diameters of deformed bar (D10, D13), and types of FRP plate (AFRP, CFRP) as variables to analyse flexural performance according to FRP plate and substitution rate of recycled aggregate. As a result, in all specimens, specimens strengthened by FRP plate showed a maximum of 17% increase in performance compared to specimens without FRP plate and strengthening performance of CFRP was found to be higher than AFRP. When modulus of rupture was used, the value of cracking moment was similar to that of the reference equation. As bending moment of some specimens strengthened by FRP plate failed to satisfy the criteria of KCI 2012 and ACI 440-2R, additional experiment is deemed as necessary.

  • The strengthening effect of CFRP sheet and AFRP sheet with buckling-restrained brace for Beam-Column joints under constant axial and cyclic lateral loading is evaluated experimentally in this paper. Six test specimens were constructed. The main test parameters included the FRP Sheet and Buckling-restrained braces. The results of the tests were analyzed by focusing on their mode of failure, maximum load, ductility indexes, and energy dissipation capacity. Test results indicated that CFRP Sheet with the buckling-restrained brace system significantly increased the strength and stiffness of the specimen and that it was the most adequate retrofitting method.

  • Nominal flexural strength of RC members strengthened with FRP sheets is generally based on the tensile strength of composite materials obtained from coupon tests. This method is based on the assumption that bond failure does not occur until the FRP sheet reaches its rupture strength. According to the previous researches, however, bond failure often occurs before the FRP sheet reaches its rupture strength. Some attempts were made to control debonding failure by increasing the bonded length of sheet or wrapping the section around their side of the member(U-wrap). In this study, the flexural failure mechanism of RC beams strengthened with AFRP sheets with different bond lengths is investigated. Their strengthening details to prevent the premature debonding failure are also suggested and its effectiveness is verified.

  • In this study, experimental research was carried out to evaluate and improve the seismic performance of reinforced concrete beam-column joint regions using strengthening materials (CFRP sheet, AFRP sheet, embedded CFRP rod) in existing reinforced concrete structure. Therefore it was constructed and tested seven specimens retrofitting the beam-column joint regions using such retrofitting materials. Specimens, designed by retrofitting the beam-column joint regions of existing reinforced concrete structure, were showed the stable failure mode and increase of load-carrying capacity due to the effect of crack control at the times of initial loading and confinement of retrofitting materials during testing. Specimens LBCJ-CRUS, designed by the retrofitting of CFRP Rod and CFRP Sheet in reinforecd beam-column joint regions were increased its maximum load carrying capacity by 1.54 times and its energy dissipation capacity by 2.36 times in comparison with standard specimen LBCJ for a displacement ductility of 4 and 7. And Specimens LBCJ-CS, LBCJ-AF series were increased its energy dissipation capacity each by 2.04~2.34, 1.63~3.02 times in comparison with standard specimen LBCJ for a displacement ductility of 7.
