  • The purpose of the current study was to compare radiation dose of 64MDCT performed with automatic exposure control (AEC) with manual selection fixed tube current. We evaluated the CT scans of phantom of the chest and abdomen using the fixed tube current and AEC technique. Objective image noise shown as the standard deviation of CT value in Hounsfield units was measured on the obtained images. Compared with fixed tube current, AEC resulted in reduction of the chest and abdomen in the CTDIvol (35.2%, 5.9%) and DLP (49.3%, 3.2%). Compared with manually selected fixed tube current, AEC resulted in reduced radiation dose at MDCT study of chest and abdomen.

  • In this study, we proposed an image quality control for an automatic exposure control (AEC) of digital radiographic imaging system and tried to analyze the performance of the AEC by various manufacturer. The subjects of the experiment were analyzed for the AEC image quality evaluation using digital radiation generators from four manufacturer such as PHILIPS, GE Healthcare, SAMSUNG Healthcare, DK Medical Solution. We used as materials for the implementation of the image quality evaluation by coins (500 won, KOMSCO, Korea). This study evaluated the performance evaluation of the AEC as image quality and exposure dose (Milliampere-seconds; mAs). The image quality evaluation was tried visual assessment by two radiologic technologists and contrast to noise (CNR) by ImageJ. The exposure dose investigated mAs on digital radiation generators. The radiographic coin images acquired 360 images based on change in the control factors of the AEC, which were kVp, the consistency of field configuration and dominant zone, sensitivity and density. As a result, there was a significant difference in the AEC performance between manufacturer. The CNR by the AEC for each manufacturer showed a difference of up to about 1.9 times. The exposed tube current by the AEC for each manufacturer showed a difference of up to about 5.8 times. It is expected that our proposed evaluation method using coins could be applied as the AEC performance evaluation method in the future.

  • A non-phosphorous program employing an alkyl epoxy carboxylate (AEC) has been successfully applied to petrochemical and other large industrial open recirculating cooling water systems. AEC is a patented non-phosphorous calcium carbonate scale inhibitor that has demonstrated better scale inhibition abilities than traditional organic phosphonates. In addition to its antiscalant properties, AEC inhibits carbon steel corrosion when used at high dosages. AEC can be combined with zinc to form a non-phosphorous program with very low levels of phosphate to provide an environmentally acceptable program. In actual applications, the total phosphate developed in the cooling system from cycling the makeup is below 1 ppm as $PO_4$. This level has complied with the highest standards of wastewater discharge limitations. The performance of two AEC/Zinc applications is reviewed. In both cases excellent corrosion and scale control were achieved with AEC/Zinc programs. One case history details the performance with a low hardness water (100 ppm calcium, as $CaCO_3$) operating at 8-10 cycles of concentration. The corrosive nature of the water and the long retention time of the system stressed both the corrosion and scale control capabilities of the program. The second case history demonstrates the performance of the program with a moderate hardness water (400-600 ppm calcium, as $CaCO_3$), but under harsh conditions of high temperature and low flow. The AEC/zinc combination has been found to be highly effective in controlling the corrosion of ferrous metals. AEC can provide good corrosion inhibition at high concentrations, while zinc is known to be an excellent cathodic inhibitor. The combination of the two inhibitors not only provides a synergistic blend that is effective over a wide range of operating conditions, but also is environmentally friendly.

  • AEC was designed to assist in the production of radiographs of equal density and to aid in the production f consistently high quality radiographs. Many improvements have been made in the AEC and these have helped to increase it's acceptance. Newer system (Falling load) control kVp and mA as well as exposure time. Authors have had experiments about the characteristics of AEC by Zone System. Zone System is the method to detection of photographic image qualify by control the photo print from Fred Archer and Ansel Adams. With the Zone System theory the experiments of density control, characteristics of phantom thickness and reproducibility of occupation rate of contrast media could make quality control of X-ray photography effectively in falling load system.

  • In the U.S., performance assessment on the Automatic Exposure Control system (AEC) is managed according to the Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA). However, The AEC is not available in the performance assessment conducted in Korea. Also, there is no study made on the performance of the automatic exposure control system for mammography in Korea. For this reason, this study examined the performance of the automatic exposure control system for mammography that was clinically used in the Incheon area. Result showed that the difference of the mean optical density was 0.79 ~ 2.81. This implies that some devices caused unnecessary x-ray exposure to patients. Furthermore, only 61.5% of the entire experimental device was shown to be satisfactory in terms of change in mean optical density. Moreover, in terms of the subject's thickness, change in radiographic density was shown to be severe among lower X-ray tube voltage while there was severe density change in X-ray image depending on X-ray tube voltage among the subjects with more thickness. Therefore, it is suggested to provide performance management on the AEC for mammography.

  • The purpose of the study was to evaluation of the radiation dose reduction and the possibility of the maintainability of the adequate image quality using various automatic exposure control (AEC) systems in multi-detector computed tomography (MDCT). We used three AEC systems for the study: General Electric Healthcare (Auto-mA 3D), Philips Medical systems (DoseRight) and Siemens Medical Solutions (Care Dose 4D). The general scanning protocol was created for the each examination with the same scanning parameters as many as possible. In the various AEC systems, the evaluation of reduced-dose was evaluated by comparing to fixed mAs with using human phantom. The image quality of the phantom was evaluated with measuring the image noise (standard deviation) by insert regions of interests. Finally, when we applied to AEC for three manufacturers, the radiation dose reduction decreased each 35.3% in the Auto-mA 3D, 58.2% in the DoseRight, and 48.6% in the Care Dose 4D. And, there was not statistical significant difference among the image quality in the Strong/Weak of the Care Dose 4D(P=.269). This applies to variety of the AEC systems which will be very useful to reduce the dose and to maintain the high quality.

  • In this study, an adaptive evolutionary computation (AEC), which uses adaptively a genetic algorithm having global searching capability and an evolution strategy having local searching capability with different methodologies, is suggested. We applied the AEC to design of fuzzy logic controllers for a PSS (power system stabilizer). FLCs for PSS controllers are designed for damping the low frequency oscillations caused by disturbances such as tile sudden changes of loads, outages in generators, transmission line faults, etc. The membership functions of FLCs is optimally determined by AEC.

  • This study was to evaluate the usability of self-developed phantom for evaluating automatic exposure control (AEC) using three-dimensions (3D) printer. 3D printer of fused deposition modeling (FDM) type was utilized to make the self-developed AEC phantom and image acquisitions were conducted by two different type of scanners. The self-developed AEC phantom consisted of four different size of portions. As a result, two types of phantom (pyramid and pentagon shape) were created according to the combination of the layers. For evaluating the radiation dose with the two types of phantom, the values of tube current, computed tomography dose index volume (CTDIvol), and dose length product (DLP) were compared. As a result, it was confirmed that the values of tube current were properly reflected according to the thickness, and the CTDIvol and DLP were not significantly changed regardless of AEC functions of different scanners. In conclusion, the self-developed phantom by using 3D printer could assess whether the AEC function works well. So, we confirmed the possibility that a self-made phantom could replace the commercially expensive AEC performance evaluation phantom.

  • This study was conducted to observe the changes in radiation exposure dose and image quality of pediatric patients according to the presence and size of the gonadal shield when using the AEC system. X-ray equipment was used to measure the radiation exposure dose in the abdominal and gonads of the pediatric phantom when no shielding body was used and when three different sizes of shielding body were used, and SNR and CNR were measured through the obtained images. As a result of the study, the radiation exposure dose to the gonads decreased in proportion to the size of the radiation shield, but the radiation exposure dose to the abdomen was rather increased, and the image quality did not change. It is recommended to use a shield with a size optimized for the age, weight, and body size of the pediatric patient so as not to be overexposed by the increased radiation due to the radiation shield due to the use of the AEC System. For this purpose, information about the pediatric patient with the nurse It is believed that exchange is necessary.
