  • A lot of PSC railway bridges have been constructed in countries and, they are considered as cost-effective and less maintenance-demanded structures. However, recently several collapse of PSC bridges happened in Europe show that PSC bridges have some serious maintenance problems related to tendon corrosion and wire fractures. Furthermore, any reliable NDT method is not presented until recently. In this paper, AE techniques are investigated for detection of wire fractures in PSC beam. Using long-term monitoring AE techniques, two acoustic signals of wire fractures in a PSC beam are obtained. These data are compared to other noise signals. Based on the test results, the characteristics of the AE signals are classified and wire fracture signals are figured out among the other AE signals. As a result, AE techniques are certainly exposed to tendon fracture sound, and application of AE techniques are better than any other non-destructive method.

  • In this research, an experimental study is presented to check the possibilities of offshore structures monitoring using AE techniques. The underwater transducer and preamplifier are fabricated. And, it is proved that this unit can be used for the detection of AE in offshore structures. Wave propagation studies have shown that supplementary attenuations due to seawater are significantly reducing the detection range of the sensors. It excludes the possibility of offshore structures monitoring with a small number of sensors. We conclude that AE waves would be correctly detected for a path of about 3m. Tubular joints have been tested in air and underwater using simulated elastic wave. Ability of AE techniques to detect and locate cracks early in their evolution has been demonstrated. Several parameters of AE generation have been set in evidence. It has also been shown that crack development goes with an increase of AE parameter. Conclusively, it is shown that AE techniques can provide practical alternatives to present methods being used for inspection of deep-water offshore structures undergoing structural degradation due to fatigue crack growth.

  • The paper presents an investigation of the widely varying mechanical performance and behaviour of steel and Glass Fibre Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) reinforced concrete beams using non-destructive techniques of Acoustic Emission (AE) and Digital Image Correlation (DIC) under four-point bending. Laboratory experiments are performed on both differently reinforced concrete beams with 0.33%, 0.52% and 1.11% of tension reinforcement against balanced section. The results show that the ultimate load-carrying capacity increases with an increase in tensile reinforcement in both cases. In addition to that, AE waveform parameters of amplitude and number of AE hits successfully correlates and picks up the divergent mechanism of cracking initiation and progression of failure in steel reinforced and GFRP reinforced concrete beams. AE activity is about 20-30% more in GFRP-RC beams as compared to steel-RC beams. It was primarily due to the lower modulus of elasticity of GFRP bars leading to much larger ductility and deflections as compared to steel-RC beams. Furthermore, AE XY event plots and longitudinal strain profiles using DIC gives an online and real-time visual display of progressive AE activity and strains respectively to efficaciously depict the crack evolution and their advancement in steel-RC and GFRP-RC beams which show a close matching with the micro-and macro-cracks visually observed in the actual beams at various stages of loading.

  • The structural state of a bridge is currently examined by visual inspection or by wired sensor techniques, which are relatively expensive, vulnerable to inclement conditions, and time consuming to undertake. In contrast, wireless sensor networks are easy to deploy and flexible in application so that the network can adjust to the individual structure. Different sensing techniques have been used with such networks, but the acoustic emission technique has rarely been utilized. With the use of acoustic emission (AE) techniques it is possible to detect internal structural damage, from cracks propagating during the routine use of a structure, e.g. breakage of prestressing wires. To date, AE data analysis techniques are not appropriate for the requirements of a wireless network due to the very exact time synchronization needed between multiple sensors, and power consumption issues. To unleash the power of the acoustic emission technique on large, extended structures, recording and local analysis techniques need better algorithms to handle and reduce the immense amount of data generated. Preliminary results from utilizing a new concept called Acoustic Emission Array Processing to locally reduce data to information are presented. Results show that the azimuthal location of a seismic source can be successfully identified, using an array of six to eight poor-quality AE sensors arranged in a circular array approximately 200 mm in diameter. AE beamforming only requires very fine time synchronization of the sensors within a single array, relative timing between sensors of $1{\mu}s$ can easily be performed by a single Mote servicing the array. The method concentrates the essence of six to eight extended waveforms into a single value to be sent through the wireless network, resulting in power savings by avoiding extended radio transmission.

  • The results of source location in terms of AE signal occurred by the spot exciting as suggested in this research, it has been confirmed that AE technique is quite fruitful in figuring out the location of the occurrence, form, size and direction of the defects. Thus, it is expected that the application of the experimental method suggested in this study would make it possible to identify, in the nondestructive way, the location of the defect in the material.

  • Various monitoring techniques are now available for structural health monitoring and Acoustic Emission (AE) is one of them. One of the major advantages of the AE technique is its capability to locate active cracks in structural members. AE crack locating approaches are affected by the signal attenuation and dispersion of elastic waves due to inhomogeneity and geometry of reinforced concrete (RC) members. In this paper, a novel technique is described based on signal processing and sensor arrangement to process multisensory AE data generated by the onset and propagation of cracks and is validated with experimental results from an in-situ load test. Considering the sources of uncertainty in the AE crack location process, a methodology is proposed to capture and locate events generated by cracks. In particular, the relationship between AE events and load is analyzed, and the feasibility of using the AE technique to evaluate the cracking behavior of two RC slab strips during loading to failure is studied.

  • The process of localization of cracks and movement of the fracture process zone(FPZ) was studied using the acoustic-emission(AE) techniques. The rate of AE events and sources of AE activity were studied for mortar and rock specimens loaded in uniaxial compression. A series of transducers could be used to detect and AE activity. Based on the time differences between detection of the event at different transducers, source of AE activity could be detected. The rate of AE events increased sharply before peak load. The highest rate occurred just after peak load was attained. The effective crack length estimated from the modified linear-elastic fracture mechanics seemed consistent with the optical and AE measurements.

  • Both in-process quality control and reliability of the weld is one of the major concerns is applying friction welding. No reliable nondestructive monitoring method is available at present to determine the weld quality particularly in process of production. So that, this paper presents an experimental examination and quantitative analysis for the effects of initial acoustic emission(AE) counts on the weld strength relating to the rotating speed as a new approach which attempts finally to develop an on-line quality monitoring system design for friction welds using AE techniques. As one of the important results, it was well confirmed that the initial AE counts occurring during plastic deformation period of welding were quantitatively correlated with reliability at 95% confidence level to the joint strength of welds, tube-to-tube (SM 20 C to STS 304) and then an AE technique using the initial AE counts can be reliably applied to in-process strength monitoring of the weld.
