fatigue life and nondestructive evaluation were examined experimentally using surface crack specimen and compact tension specimen of 5083 aluminium alloy. Acoustic emission signals emanated during failure of aluminum alloys has been the subject of numerous investigations. Possible sources of AE during deformation have been suggested as the dislocations, fracture of brittle particles and debonding of these particles from the alloy matrix. Fatigue life and penetration behavior of long surface crack can be evaluated quantitatively using K values proposed by authors. The influence of stress ratio on the frequency characteristics of AE signals were investigated.

The initiation and growth of short fatigue cracks in the simulated aircraft structure with a series of rivet holes was detected by acoustic emission (AE). The location and the size of short tracks were determined by AE source location techniques and the measurement with traveling microscope. AE events increased intermittently with the initiation and growth of short cracks to form a stepwise increment curve of cumulative AE events. For the precise determination of AE source locations, a region-of-interest (ROI) was set around the rivet holes based on the plastic zone size in fracture mechanics. Since the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) was very low at this early stage of fatigue cracks, the accuracy of source location was also enhanced by the wavelet transform do-noising. In practice, the majority of AE signals detected within the ROI appeared to be noise from various origins. The results showed that the effort of structural geometry and SNR should be closely taken into consideration for the accurate evaluation of fatigue damage in the structure.
A slope may fail after construction owing to external factors such as localized rainfall, earthquake, and weathering. Therefore, the grasp of failure probability for slope failures is necessary to maintain their stability. In particular, it is very difficult to detect the symptoms of rock slope failure in advance by using traditional methods, such as displacement due to the brittleness of rocks. However, Acoustic Emission (AE) techniques can predict slope failures earlier than the traditional methods. This study grasped failure probability of slope by applying AE techniques to a rock slope with a history of collapse. When applying AE techniques to a slope that has a high probability of failure, the grasp of failure probability of the specific location became possible.

In this work, corrosion of 304 stainless steel was evaluated by using acoustic emission(AE) technique. AE measurement system was set for detecting acoustic signal during accelerated corrosion test of the specimen. AE signal started to be detected after the time of pitting corrosion initiation was evaluated by anodic polarization curve. Pitting corrosion damage was confirmed by optical microscopic observation of the surface morphology. AE cumulative counts and amplitude according to corrosion time could be divided into three stages. These trends were discussed in relation with changing pitting corrosion mechanism. Feasibilities of AE technique for evaluation of corrosion damage and mechanism were suggested.

Ultraprecision machining and MEMS technology have been taken more and more important position in machining of microparts. Micro endmilling is one of the prominent technology that has wide spectrum of application field ranging from macro parts to micro products. Also, the method of micro-grooving using micro endmill is used widely owing to many merit, but has problems of precision and quality of products due to tool wear and tool fracture. This investigation deals with state monitoring using acoustic emission(AE) signal in the micro-grooving. Characteristic evaluation of AE raw signal, AE hit and frequency analysis for condition monitoring is presented. Also, the feature extraction of AE signal directly related to machining process is executed. Then, the distinctive micro endmill state according to the each tool condition is classified by the fuzzy C-means algorithm.

Since grinding is a more complicated process than any other machining process, it is hard for operators to setup a grinding machine properly and to find out correctly abnormal grinding states resulting in damages to products. Abnormalities would be caused by improper setup, improper dressing/grinding conditions which are likely to be occurred without skilled operators' attention. In this study, an AE monitoring unit is developed to help operators conduct with ease setup, and set properly dressing/grinding conditions. AErms(root-mean-square) signal being monitored, on-going process states during grinding and dressing is visualized for machine operators to judge whether the processes are in good condition. Evaluation tests are carried out on centerless grinding machines-both cylindrical and internal. The developed AE monitoring system is verified to be useful to check grinding/dressing states in process even in the centerless grinding of which process is most unknown among various grinding methods because of the complex structure.

In this study, mechanical characteristics test of Functionally Gradient Materia (FGM) was performed by means of Modified Small Punch (MSP) Test with FGM; NiCrAlY-8YSZ and PSZ-Ni. To determine fracture mechanic factor, it was carried out MSP test that has possibility with small specimen (10*10*0.5 mm$^{t}$ ) and AE test to analyze micro fracture mechanism. As a result, fracture behavior became varied from brittle fracture to ductile as the content of Ni(or NiCrAlY) composition was increased and fracture energy was increased too. AE characteristics demonstrated that AE technique can detect the onset of fracture processes and AE energy was suddenly increased in the vicinity of maximum load. Since Young's modulus, fracture stress and fracture toughness was determined by MSP test, it can be known that the composition of NiCrAly 75%/8YSZ25% has the best mechanical property and furthermore this result is supported with fracture surface observation.

In this study, various damage modes in bending unimorph piezoelectric composite actuators with a thin sandwiched PZT plate during bending fracture tests have been evaluated by monitoring acoustic emission (AE) signals in terms of waveform and peak frequency as well as AE parameters. Three kinds of actuator specimens consisting of woven fabric fiber skin layers and a PZT ceramic core layer are loaded with a roller and an AE activity from the specimen is monitored during the entire loading using an AE transducer mounted on the specimen. AE characteristics from a monolithic PZT ceramic with a thickness of $250{\mu}m$ are examined first in order to distinguish different AE signals from various possible damage modes in piezoelectric composite actuators. Post-failure observations and stress analyses in the respective layers of the specimens are conducted to identify particular features in the acoustic emission signal that correspond to specific types of damage modes. As a result, the signal classification based on waveform and peak frequency analyses successfully describes the failure process of the bending piezoelectric composite actuator exhibiting diverse failure mechanisms. Furthermore, it is elucidated that when the PZT ceramic embedded actuators are loaded mechanical bending loads, the failure process of actuator specimens with different lay-up configurations is almost same irrespective of their lay-up configurations.
In this study, SiC powder was added to twill woven carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) composites to improve its mechanical properties. An acoustic emission (AE) frequency analysis method was suggested for the prediction of failure behaviors. Tensile tests were conducted and the fracture characteristics of each component of the SiC reinforced composite were evaluated using AE. The results showed that SiC powder improved the strength of twill woven CFRP composites and the fracture behavior of the SiC reinforced CFRP composite and its crack extension could be effectively evaluated on the basis of the specific AE frequency bands which are 100 to 228 kHz and 428 to 536 kHz upon the resin failure and 232 to 424 kHz due to addition of SiC powder and 576 to 864 kHz at the fiber breakage.
A tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding method was used for the bonding of stainless steel. TIG welding using inert gas (He or Ar gas) is a method to prevent oxidation and nitriding of materials and to combine non-ferrous metals. This method has the advantage of obtaining a smooth weld surface. In this study, the welding characteristics of 304 stainless steel welded by TIG welding method were analyzed by using nondestructive technique. Ultrasonic and Acoustic Emission (AE) was applied to evaluate the micro-damage of TIG welded 304 stainless steel. The velocity and damping coefficient of ultrasonic wave showed a slight difference in HAZ, which is the welding part of stainless steel. The AE parameters of average frequency, rise time and event were analyzed for the dynamic behavior of stainless steel during loading. Optimal AE parameters for evaluating the degree of damage to the specimen have been derived. Fractograph and metal structures of 304 stainless steel using SEM and optical microscope were discussed.
