  • This study is aimed to have a database of system development for the prediction, monitoring, analyzing, and evaluation of tensile strength and damage characteristics through AE technique for CFRP. Therefore the correlations between impact characteristics (such as impact velocity, impact energy, delamination area etc) and AE signals for CFRP laminates were investigated. And also it were accomplished the evaluation of tensile strength and the investigation on correlation with AE signals for impact damaged specimen of CFRP laminates.

  • The crank shafts need anti-corrosion materials. So STS 304 is the essential material to manufacture this shaft. However, it costs more to manufacture the shafts by using only STS 304 than welding of STS 304 to other carbon steels. And it has been difficult to weld this sort of dissimilar materials. They could be unstable in the quality by the conventional arc welding. And also they have a lot of technical problems in manufacturing. But by the friction welding technique, it will be able to be made without such problems. Then, this study aimed not only to develop the optimization of dissimilar friction welding of crank shafts steels of STS 304, SM35C, but also to develop the application technique of the acoustic emission to accomplish in-process real-time quality(such as tensile) evaluation during friction welding of the shafts by the AE technique.

  • Steel-confined reinforced concrete (SCRC) columns feature highly complex and invisible mechanisms that make damage evaluation and pattern recognition difficult. In the present article, the prevailing acoustic emission (AE) technique was applied to monitor and evaluate the damage process of steel-confined RC columns in a quasi-static test. AE energy-based indicators, such as index of damage and relax ratio, were proposed to trace the damage progress and quantitatively evaluate the damage state. The fuzzy C-means algorithm successfully discriminated the AE data of different patterns, validity analysis guaranteed cluster accuracy, and principal component analysis simplified the datasets. A detailed statistical investigation on typical AE features was conducted to relate the clustered AE signals to micro mechanisms and the observed damage patterns, and differences between steel-confined and unconfined RC columns were compared and illustrated.

  • Development of Real-Time Quality Evaluation of Friction Welding by Acousitc Emission : Report 1 ABSTRACT : According as the friction welding has been increasingly applied in manufacturing various machine components because of its significant economic and technical advantages, one of the important concerns is the reliable quality monitoring method for a good weld quality with both joint strength and toughness in the process of its production. However no reliable nondestructive test method is available at present to determine the weld quality particularly in process of production. So this paper presents an experimental examination and quantitative analysis for the real-time evaluation of friction weld quality by acoustic emission, as a new approach which attempts finally to develop an on-line quality monitoring system design for friction welds using AE techniques. As one of the important results, it was confirmed, through this study, that AE techniques can be reliably applied to evaluating the friction weld qualify with 100% joint strength, as the cumulative AE counts occurring during welding period were quantitatively correlated with reliability at 95% confidence level to the joint strength of welds. Real-Time Evaluation of Automatic Production Quality Control for Friction Welding Machine : Report 2 Abstract : Both in-process quality control and high reliability of the weld is one of the major concerns in applying friction welding to the economical and qualified mass-production. No reliable nondestructive monitoring method is available at present to determine the real-time evaluation of automatic production quality control for friction welding machine. This paper, so that, presents the experimental examinations and statistical quantitative analysis of the correlation between the initial cumulative counts of acoustic emission(AE) occurring during plastic deformation period of the welding and the tensile strength of the welded joints as well as the various welding variables, as a new approach which attempts finally to develop an on-line (or real-time) quality monitoring system and a program for the process of real-time friction welding quality evaluation by initial AE cumulative counts. As one of the important results, it was well confirmed that the initial AE cumulative counts were quantitatively and cubically correlated with reliability of 95% confidence level to the joint strength of the welds, bar-to-bar (SCM4 to SUM31, SCM4 to SUM24L) and that an AE technique using initial AE counts can be reliably applied to real-time strength evaluation of the welded joints, and that such a program of the system was well developed resulting in practical possibility of real-time quality control more than 100% joint efficiency showing good weld with no micro-structural defects.

  • An opportunity to use the elevated temperature has been recently increasing in various elements of heat facilities or machines such as heat exchanger tubes, pressure vessels, engines of aircraft, boilers and turbines in power plants, and nuclear reactor components, etc. as machinery industry develops. Thus, the development of such elevated-temperature heat-resisting materials and the studies on their elevated-temperature materials friction welding, creep design and analysis have been considered as an important and needful fact. In this paper, friction welding optimization for 1Cr0.5Mo to STS304 and AE applications for the weld quality evaluation were investigated. The important results of this study are as follows : The techniques for dissimilar friction welding optimization of the elevated temperature materials 1Cr0.5Mo and STS304 and its real-time weld quality evaluation by AE were developed, considering on both strength and toughness. • This study was performed to optimize friction welding conditions of Cr-Mo steel bars used for hydraulic of pneumatic valve spools and to realize the real-time evaluation of weld quality by acoustic emission method. SNCM220, SCM435, SCAM645, and SCM415 steel bars were tested to find optimum conditions of friction welding. Auantitative equations which exhibit the relations of tensile strength, elongation, reduction of area and energy absorption with friction heating time were obtained by the experiment. Acoustic emission was also performed in the friction weldig process, and the real-time evaluation was enabled to find the optimum range of weld strength. Finally, the strength and toughness of welded joints were interpreted by the sem analysis of tensile fracture surfaces.

  • Plunger (piston rod) materials are used in high-pressure condition. So STD11 is the essential material to build this plunger. However, it costs more to make a plunger by using only STD11 than using the welding of STD11 to SCM440 and other dissimilar material. And it has been difficult to weld this sort of dissimilar materials. They could be unstable in the quality by the conventional arc welding. And also they have a lot of technical problems in manufacturing. But, by the friction welding technique, it will be able to be made without such problems. And then, on account of such reasons, we need a new approach of study on real-time quality evaluation by acoustic emission (AE) techniques as well as a domestic development of the plunger by friction welding. So that, the purpose of this study for such developments is the development of a plunger by optimizing of friction welding with more reliability and more applicability. Then, this study aimed not only to develop the optimization of friction welding of dissimilar plunger steels of STD11 to SCM440, but also to develop the application technique of the acoustic emission to accomplish an in-process real-time quality evaluation during friction welding of the plunger materials by the AE technique.
