Monitoring of Tool Wear using AE Signal in Interrupted cutting (단속절삭에서 AE신호를 이용한 공구마멸의 감시)

  • Characteristics of AE(Acoustic Emission) signal is related to cutting conditions, tool materials, and tool geometry in metal cutting. Relation between AE signal and tool wear was investigated experimentally. Experiment is carried out by interrupted cutting for SCM420 workpiece with TiN coating tool on HSS material. AE RMS voltage and count per event were increased according to tool wear. The major results are as follows : 1) AE RMS value is nearly constant as cutting speed changes, but is rapidly increase as feed rate increases. 2) AE RMS value and Count per Event increase as tool wear increases. 3) It is more effective to monitor tool wear by Incremental rate of AE RMS value than by Incremental rate of count per event.

  • The purpose of this investigation is experimentally to clarify the machinability and tool wear of STS 304 steel pipe material for piping. In order to determine the effects of cutting parameters and tool wear on thrust, torque, AE RMS, drilling is conducted on CNC milling machine. In this experiment, it is measured that thrust, torque, tool wear length, tool wear area and AE RMS during drilling using Hss tool. It has been found that a) During the drilling, the thrust and the torque of the STS 304 pipe are received more the effect of the feed than the spindle speed and the thrust increase with the increase of feed, b) The value of the AE RMS is been larger the effect of the cutting speed than the feed rate, and the value of the AE RMS increase with the increase of spindle speed, c) It has been found that the suitable feed in feed condition of 0.03, 0.05, 0.1, 0.15mm/rev is below 0.05mm/rev, d) The value of the AE RMS was shown a characteristic of the jump value during it was a sudden inrcrease of the tool wear. The increased character of the AE RMS value can be known an effective factor of the tool wear detection, and e) It can be quantitatively evaluated the condition of the tool according to calculate a area of the drill wear image which is obtained by a vision system.

  • The characteristics of AE(Acoustic Emission) signal is related to cutting conditio, tool material, and tool geometry in metal cutting. The relation between AE signal and tool life was investigated experimentally. Experiment is carried out by gear shaping and SCM 420 workpiece. AE RMS voltage were increased according totool wear. It is suggested that maximum value of AE RMS voltage is an effective parameter to monitor tool life.

  • Automatic monitoring of the cutting conditions is one of the most improtant technologies in machining. In this study, the feasibility in applying acoustic emission(AE) signals for the in-process detection of endmill wear and fracture has been investigated by performing experimental test on the NC vertical milling machine with SM45C for specimen. As the results of detecting and analyzing AE signals on various cutting conditions, the followings have confirmed. (1) The RMS value of acoustic emission is related sensitively to the cutting velocity, but is not affected largely by feed rate. (2) The burst type AE signals of high level have been observed when removing chips distorderly and discontinuously. (3) When the RMS value grows up rapidly due to the increase of wear the endmill are generally broken or fractured, but when the endmills fracture at the conditions of smooth chip-flow or built-up-edge(BUE) occurred frequently, the rapid change of the RMS arenot found. And it is expected that this technigue will be quite useful for in-process sensing of tool wear and fracture.

  • The ductile cast iron is austempered at 300, 350 and 40$0^{\circ}C$ temperature in order to investigate the basic factors for monitoring drill wear in automatic production process, and cutting force and AE RMS signals are measured with changing cutting condition for ADI(Austempered Ductile Cast Iron) with different mechanical properties. The signals of cutting force were influenced by cutting speed and feedrate greatly. On the other hand AE RMS signals are influenced by cutting speed where as it is not related with feedrate. As the depth of drilling increases, cutting force shows a slow increase and the value of AE RMS increases until the range of h/d=4. But over the range it increases greatly due to an amount of chip discharge and friction with inner wall of drilling hole, etc. As the drill diameter increases at a constant depth of drilling. Cutting force increases linearly, but the level of AE RMS does not increases linearly due to circumferential velocity and great influence of h/d.

  • A study on the Correlation of Orthogonal Cutting Parameter (Cutting speed, Depth of cut, Feed Rate) and Acoustic Emission Signal. It is well known that acoustic emission (AE) is the emission of elastic wave resulting from the deformation and fracture of materials. This study estabished correlation of orthogonal cutting parameter and AE signal, and researched into in-process monitoring of tool wear and failure. The results are as follow; 1. AE RMS was under the influence of cutting speed but hardly influenced by depth of cut and feed rate. 2. AE RMS was under the influence of flank wear. 3. AE count rate increased by increased cutting speed. 4. AE RMS value was rapidly increased in 130 m flank wear.

  • The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the grade of WA vitrified and resinoid bond grinding wheels by the sue of AE measuring system. When the manufactured 48 kinds of specimens were scratched by the method of OKOSHI'S grade test, the relationship between the amount of bit scratch depth of grinding wheel specimens and the character- istics of AE signals, and the relationship of AE counts and grade were considered as fololws; (1) The higher the grades are AE cumlulative event counts N and AE event count rate n, the smaller the values tend to be. But A $E_{rms}$is in reverse. (2) In the case of same grade, the smaller the grain size is, the higher the value of AE cumulative event counts N and A $E_{rms}$is results of comparison and observation. The grinding wheel with lower elasticity and with higher percentage of pore detected higher value of AE cumula- tive event counts N than with higher elasticity and lower percentage of pore. But A $E_{rms}$ is in reverse. (3) AE cumulative event counts N and bit scratch depth h have normally one to one correspondence. (4) It can be expected that quantitative evaluations of grade by using AE have been carried out by the wave observation of AE signal in line with the relationship between load speed of bit and AE cumulative event counts N & AE event count rate n.'   • For the purpose of monitoring the abnormal state in proportion to cutting in automatic production process, the 3 kinds of specimens different from mechanical properties by austempering through temperature variation were manufactured, and the effects of tool wear on thrust and AE RMS was analyzed with sequential drilling in in-process. When the ADI specimens were drilled, the relationship of thrust and AE RMS with flank wear was studied through experiments, and it is confirmed that the reliable wear state is able to be monitored by using these signals. It was shown that thrust and AE RMS increased slowly till flank wear reached to V$_{B}$ = 0.25mm, and they increased steeply over the value. The effective tool exchange time was able to be pre-estimated by using this fact. It was validated that the tool breakage was able to be detected on the real time by monitoring in in-process.s.

  • Automatic monitoring of cutting process is one of the most important technology in machining. AE sensing technology has been applied to monitoring process and proved to be effective in detecting tool abnor- malities such as tool wear and fracture. In this experimental study. AE signals were detected from the tool holder for continuous and interrupted cutting, which obtained from changing workpice material configuration, under control of constant cutting speed from CNC lathe. From statistical and frequency analysis, the AE signals were analyzed to obtaining the characteristics of continuous and interrupted cutting conditions and tool failure. The Kurtosis values decreased but RMS voltages increased as the cutting speed increased, in both continuous and interrupted cutting. RMS voltage is suddenly increased but Kurtosis value is suddenly decreased when tool failure condition. Power spectrum density of AE signals when tool failure reaches extreme value around 0.065 cycles/ .mu. m.

  • The charactistics of AE(Acoustic Emission) signal is related to cutting conditions, tool materials and tool geometry in metal cutting. The tool geometry change which is derived from tool wear affects the source of AE signal in machining process. The relationship between AE signal and tool wear was experimentally investigated. THe value of RMS(Root Mean Sequare) and Amplitude of AE signal were increased in tool wear condition. Also the high value of Count per Hit and Count vs. Frequency was observed in this condtion. As a result, tool wear can be effectively detected by AE signal during cutting operation.
