In this study, acoustic emission(AE) technique has been applied to detecting quench which is one of the serious peoblems to assure the integrity of superconducting coil at cryogenic temperature. The characteristics of AE parameters have been analyzed by correlating with the number of quenches, whinding tension of superconducting coil and charge rate of transport current. The quench localization was also performed using AE signals and there was also good correlation between quench current and AE parameters such as AE energy and AE events. In this study, it was confirmed that AE signals were mainly due to the conductor motion which caused by premature quenching. It was also found that optimized winding tension at superconducting coil was needed to prevent quench caused by conductor motion.
The objective of this study is to estimate the feasibility of acoustic emission method Jar the internal leak from the valves in nuclear power plants. The acoustic emission method was applied to the valves at the site, and the background noise was measured for the abnormal plant condition. From the comparison of background noise data with the experimental results as to relation between leak flow and acoustic signal, the minimum leak flow rates that am be detected by acoustic signal was suggested. When the background noise level are higher than the acoustic signal, the method described below was considered that the analysis the remainder among the background noise frequency spectrum and the acoustic signal spectrum.
The surfaces of machine components in sliding contact such as bearing, gears and pistons etc. frequently operate under the condition of mixed lubrication due to high load, high speed and slip. These machine components often undergo the inception of scuffing in practical application. The scuffing failure is a critical problem in modern machine components, especially for the requirement of high efficiency and small size. However, it is difficult to find a universal mechanism to explain all scuffing phenomena because there are so many factors affecting the onset of scuffing. In this study, scuffing experiments are conducted using Acoustic Emission(AE) measurement by an indirect sensing approach to detect scuffing failure. Acoustic Emission(AE) signal has been widely utilized to monitor the interaction at the friction interface. Using AE signals we can get an indication about the state of the friction processes, about the quality of solid and liquid layers on the contacting surfaces in real time. The FFT(Fast Fourier Transform) analyses of the AE signal are sued to understand the interfacial interaction and the relationship between the AE signal and the state of contact is presented.
The feasibility of the acoustic emission technique in predicting the residual fatigue life of STS304 stainless steel is presented. Acoustic emission was continuously monitored during the fatigue tests. Considerable acoustic emission occurred during the first few cycles. Acoustic Emission increased rapidly at about 90% of the fatigue life, clear and ample warning of impending fatigue failure was observed. Fatigue damage accumulation was evaluated in terms of an AE cumulative counts. The AE cumulative counts may be taken as an indicator of fatigue cumulative damage. Fatigue damages corresponding to 20, 40, 60 and 80% of the total life were induced at a cyclic stress amplitude. The specimens with and without fatigue damage were subjected to tensile tests. In tensile tests, the total cumulative counts were reduced with increasing fatigue damage. It was observed that the residual tensile strength of material did not change significantly with prior cyclic loading damages.
The objective of this study is to establish the comprehensive analytical relationship between acoustic emission and fundamental parameters of the orthogonal cutting process. The sources of acoustic emission in the orthogonal metal cutting process was identified as deformation in the shear zone and sliding friction at the chip-tool interface. The validity of this relationship is evaluated by a series of tests varing cutting speed and rake angle for A16063 tube. Strong dependence of the RMS voltage of acoustic emission on cutting speed and rake angle was observed. It was also found that the percentage contribution of AE energy at each zone for the total AE activity is constant in accordance with the change of cutting speed. The relationship between the RMS of acoustic emission and the fundamental cutting parameters was modified in order to be utilized independent of rake angle.
Crack propagation and AE characteristics of CFRP plain woven laminate composites are examined with acoustic sensor by AEDSP 32/16 board in PC system. AE signals are measured during the fracture behavior tests. The purpose of study is the estimation of the crack extension behavior effected between three kinds of fiber orientation for plain woven CFRP laminate composite and the relationship between AE characteristics and load-displacement curves and crack extension length.
This study was undertaken to obtain the fundamental knowledges on the weld deflects and it's realtime monitoring method. The paper describes the results of high speed photography, acoustic emission (AE) detection and plasma light emission (LE) measurements during $CO_2$ laser welding of STS 304 stainless steel and A5083 aluminum alloy in different welding condition. The characteristic frequencies of plasma and keyhole fluctuations at different welding speed and shield gases were measured and compared with the results of Fourier analyses of temporal AE and LE spectra, and they had considerably good agreement with keyhole and plasma fluctuation. Namely, the low frequency peaks of AE and LE shifted to higher frequency range with the welding speed increase, and leer the argon shield gas it was higher than that in helium and nitrogen gases. The low frequencies dominating in fluctuation spectra of LE probably reflect keyhole opening instability. It is possible to monitor the weld bead deflects by analyzing the acoustic and/or plasma light emission signals.
Automatic monitoring of cutting process is one of the most important technologies for increasing the stability and the reliability of unmanned manufacturing system. In this study, basic methods which use the acoustic emission (AE) signals and cutting forces were proposed to monitor flank wear (width of flank wear) quantiatively. First, in order to detect flank wear, it was investigated that the influence of cutting conditions, that is, cutting velocity, feed and depth of cut, on AE signals (${AE_rms}$) and cutting forces. Furthermore, the relation between flank wear and the measured signals (${AE_rms}$, cutting force) was discussed.
In this study, the leak detection technique of pressure vessel by using acoustic emission(AE) signal is suggested experimentally. The leak of pressure vessel is located at the welding line due to welding defects. we measured the AE signal using Rl5I sensor, and examined the AE parameters in leak condition. It is investigated that the mean value of AE signal is dependent on leak source location. So the absolute mean value of AE signal is adopted as dominant AE parameter. We proposed leak detection algorithm using AE signal mean value for monitoring the leak source location.
