Thermal degradation behavior of chlorine cure-site ACM and carboxylic cure-site ACM rubbers was studied by non-isothermal TGA thermal analysis. Carboxylic cure-site ACM rubber exhibited comparatively more thermally stable than chlorine cure-site ACM, showing higher peak temperature, at which maximum reaction rate occurred. Activation energies from Kissinger method were calculated as 118.6 kJ/mol for the chlorine cure-site ACM and 105.5 kJ/mol for the carboxylic cure-site ACM, showing similar values from Flynn-Wall-Ozawa analysis over the conversion range of 0.1~0.2. From the analysis of the reaction order change, both samples seemed thermally decomposed through the multiple reaction mechanism as is the common rubber materials.
Material characteristics and the prediction of life time of polyacrylic rubber (ACM) for automotive engine gasket were studied. Two kinds of ACM rubber compounds, having chlorine cure-site and carboxyl cure-site, were made with optimum formulations and the properties of each materials were examined. As a test results for the thermal properties and compression set, which are very important in the application for the automotive engine gasket, the compound using ACM with carboxyl cure-site was evaluated as having a better characteristics than that of ACM with chlorine cure-site. Arrhenius relationship based on time-temperature superposition principle (TTSP) was obtained through the accelerated heat aging test to predict the useful life-time for the compound using ACM with carboxyl cure-site.
A study on compressive creep behavior of ACM rubber for automotive engine gasket was performed using TMA thermal analysis. From the results of isothermal measurements with constant load of 1 N at several different temperatures of 160, 180, 200, and $220^{\circ}C$, compressive creep data at the given temperatures were obtained, and therefrom, shift factor ($a_T$) and master curve at reference temperature of $160^{\circ}C$ were obtained using time-temperature superposition principle (TTSP). $C_1$ and $C_2$ of WLF (Williams-Landel-Ferry) equation were calculated through the WLF plot as -1.107 and 11.571, respectively. From this, life time of ACM rubber at $120^{\circ}C$ was predicted as about 24,000 hrs.

Polyacrylic rubber (ACM) is well known for its excellent heat resistance and chemical stability. Additionally, its performance can be readily manipulated by modifying its functional groups, rendering it highly attractive to various industries. However, extreme climate changes have necessitated an expansion of the operating temperature range and lifespan of ACM products. This requires the optimization of both the compounding process and functional-group design. Hence, we investigated the relationship between the cross-linking system and mechanical properties of an ACM with a carboxylic cure site. The crosslink density is determined by chemical kinetics according to the structure of additives, such as diamine crosslinkers and guanidine accelerators. This interaction enables the manipulation of the scotch time and mechanical properties of the compound. This fundamental study on the correlation analysis between cross-linking systems, physical properties, and storage stability can provide a foundation for material research aimed at satisfying the increasingly demanding service conditions of rubber products.
Dynamically vulcanized PMMA/ACM (80 wt%/20 wt%) blend using DCP as a curing agent was prepared using internal mixer. The morphology, mechanical properties, optical properties, melt viscosity and die swell were characterized by using FE-SEM, tensile test, Izod impact test, dynamic mechanical analysis, ARES and capillary rheometer, respectively. The blends show a phase-separated morphology in which ACM are dispersed in PMMA matrix. Dynamically vulcanized blend exhibits higher mechanical properties, higher melt viscosity, and die swell as compared to simple blend. And, the dynamically vulcanized blend showed total transmittance of more than 75% and haze of higher than 90%, which enable it to find potential applications to fabricate an optical diffuser by extrusion process.
Compression set (CS) and weight loss by thermal degradation of the ACM rubber composite sample prepared for an automotive part were measured simultaneously at several given temperatures of $150^{\circ}C$, $160^{\circ}C$, $170^{\circ}C$, and $180^{\circ}C$. Using the relationship between them, thermal life of the sample could be predicted at a given operating temperature by applying Toops method which is based on the analysis of non-isothermal TGA thermograms. Conversion by weight loss showed a linear relationship with CS changes, exhibiting 4.2% at CS 40%. Activation energy of thermal degradation was calculated as 120.2 kJ/mol at 4.2% of weight loss from Flynn-Wall-Ozawa analysis. When the expected life was set as time to reach CS 40% at $120^{\circ}C$, the life time of the sample was calculated as 9,700 hrs when Toops method was applied.

This paper is focused on design of a new active control engine mount (ACM), which is compact in size and cost effective. The ACM, consisting of an electrodynamic actuator as the active element, flat springs and a sliding ball joint, is different in structure from the previous ACM designs based on the conventional hydraulic engine mount. Dynamic characteristics of the proposed ACM are extensively investigated before a prototype ACM, which meets the design specifications, is built in the laboratory. For cost effectiveness, a feed-forward control algorithm without a feedback sensor is used for reduction of the transmitted force through the ACM from the engine. The prototype ACM is then harmonic-tested with a rubber testing machine for verification of its control performance as well as adequacy of modeling. Experimental results show that the proposed ACM is capable of reducing the transmitted force by 20 dB up to the frequency range of 60 Hz.
When natural rubber dissolved in toluene comes into use as a binder of carbon powder, the volatilization of solvent just after the construction of biosensor brought the mechanical robustness on the paste. This characteristic satisfied the pre-requisite condition for the practical use of carbon paste electrode and a biosensor for the determination of hydrogen peroxide was designed. In order to evaluate its electrochemical qualitative and quantitative behaviors, various electrochemical kinetic parameters of the electrode, e.g. the symmetry factor (${\alpha}$, 0.37), the exchange current density ($i_0$, $0.075mAcm^{-2}$), the capacitance of double layer ($C_d$, $9.7{\times}10^{-3}F$), the time constant (${\tau}_A$, 0.92 s), the maximum current ($i_{max}$, $5.92{\times}10^{-7}Acm^{-2}$), the Michaelis constant ($K_M$, $1.99{\times}10^{-3}M$) and others were investigated. Results show that natural rubber is a promising binder of carbon powder.
The graft copolymerizations of acrylonitrile (AN) and methyl methacrylate (MMA) onto chloroprene rubber (CR) were carried out with benzoyl peroxide(BPO) as an initiator. The effect of solvent, mole ratio of AN to MMA, reaction time and temperature, and initiator concentration on graft copolymerization were examined. It was observed that the grafting efficiency increased as increasing mole ratio of AN to MMA. the graft copolymer, acrylonitrile- CR-methyl methacrylate (ACM), was identified by infrared spectroscopy and morphology. Thermal stability of ACM was found to be improved when compared with those of CR.
An enzyme electrode bound by rubber solution was newly constructed and the test of its practicability were carried out. The binder of carbon powder was styrene-butadiene rubber dissolved in toluene and enzyme source was ground tissue of cabbage root. Volatilization of the solvent made the electrode material possess a mechanical robustness and a fast signal appearance. The electrode showed electrochemically irreversible characteristics and a powerful catalytic power (detection limit=$5.0{\times}10^{-5}M$, S/N=2). The double reciprocal plot of signal current and substrate concentration was ideally linear and the symmetry factor and exchange current density of the electrode used in this work were 0.35 and $4.93{\times}10^{-5}Acm^{-2}$ respectively.
