  • trans-1, 4-Dideutero-2-butenedial ditosylhydrazone has been synthesized to investigate the path of the acetylene formation in the pyrolysis of the dry lithium salt. Mass spectra showed that three isotope isomers of acetylene which might come from the strained ring compound, tricyclo[1, 1, 0, ] butane, were formed.

  • Titanium carbide(TiC) films, known as having excellent characteristics of resistance to wear and corrosion, were deposited on SUS-304 sheets using HCD(Hollow Cathode Discharge) reactive ion plating with acetylene gas as the reactant gas. The characteristics of TiC films were examined by X-ray diffraction, micro-Vickers hardness tester, ${\alpha}$-step, SEM(Scanning Electron Spectroscopy), ESCA(Electron Spectroscopy for Chemical Analysis), and AES(Auger Electron Spectroscopy) and the results were discussed with regard to the changes of various deposition conditions(bias voltage, acetylene flow rate, temperature).

Optimization of Benzene Synthesis for Radicarbon Dating by Response Surface Method

  • Response surface method was applied to the predicting optimum conditions of benzene synthesis for radiocarbon dating. The weight of carbon dioxide, the temperature of lithium container for producing acetylene and the activation temperature of catalyst which was used for the cyclization of acetylene to benzene were used as experimental factors. The yields of benzene synthesis were measured from twelve experiments which were carried out under various experimental conditions. The polynomial equation was obtained by using three experimental factors and yields. The validity of polynomial equation was confirmed by comparing the calculated yields with the experimental ones.

  • Zinc plated steel tire cords were treated with RF plasma polymerization coating of acetylene or butadiene in order to enhance adhesion to rubber compounds. Plasma polymerization was carried out as a function of plasma power, treatment tune and gas pressure. In order to maximize adhesion, argon plasma etching was performed, with carrier gas such as argon, nitrogen and oxygen, while the adhesion of tire cords was evaluated via TCAT. Best results were obtained from a combination treatment of argon etching (90 W. 10 min, 30 mTorr) and acetylene plasma polymerization coating (10 W, 30 sec, 30 mTorr) with argon carrier gas (25/5:acetylene/argon). These samples exhibited a pull out force of 285N which is comparable to that obtained from the brass plated tire cords (290N).

Effect of additional gases on the Color of TixN Coated Film (TixN Coating층의 색상에 미치는 첨가원소의 영향)

  • Stainless steel is being used widely for various purposes due to its good corrosion resistance. There has been much research to produce a colored and corrosion-resistant stainless steel by several methods to use in decorating. In this experiment, we coated TiN(C,O,H)films on the SUS304 substrates with the DC magnetron sputtering system and then studied the texture and color of the films as a function of additional gases being inserted into the system. A (220) texture of TixN film changed to (200) by the addition of either hydrogen or the acetylene and changed further to (111) with an increase of the additional acetylene content. The addition of oxygen gas changed from the texture(220) to (111) to (200). The color of the TixN film changed from gold to gray to green with the increase of the content by the addition of oxygen gas, while it changed to pink and finally to gray with the increased of the content by the addition of acetylene gas. Reflectance increased in the region of short wavelength by the addition of hydrogen, but decreased with the increase of the oxygen and the acetylene content.
