Real-time Estimation of the Earthquake Magnitude Using the Bracketed Cumulative and Peak Parameters of the Ground-motion Acceleration of a Single Station (단일 지진관측소의 지반가속도 구간 누적값 및 최대값 파라미터를 이용한 실시간 지진규모 추정 연구)

  • In industrial facilities sites, the conventional method determining the earthquake magnitude (M) using earthquake ground-motion records is generally not applicable due to the poor quality of data. Therefore, a new methodology is proposed for determining the earthquake magnitude in real-time based on the amplitude measures of the ground-motion acceleration mostly from S-wave packets with the higher signal-to-ratios, given the Vs30 of the site. The amplitude measures include the bracketed cumulative parameters and peak ground acceleration (As). The cumulative parameter is either CAV (Cumulative Absolute Velocity) with 100 SPS (sampling per second) or BSPGA (Bracketed Summation of the PGAs) with 1 SPS. The arithmetic equations to determine the earthquake magnitude are derived from the CAV(BSPGA)-As-M relations. For the application to broad ranges of earthquake magnitude and distance, the multiple relations of CAV(BSPGA)-As-M are derived based on worldwide earthquake records and successfully used to determine the earthquake magnitude with a standard deviation of ${\pm}0.6M$.

A Study on Motion Acceleration-Deceleration Time to Suppress Residual Vibration of Robot (로봇 잔류 진동 저감을 위한 모션 가감속 시간 설계 연구)

  • In this paper, we proposed a method to determine the acceleration/deceleration time of the motion for reducing the residual vibration caused by the resonance of the robot in the high-speed motion. The relationship between the acceleration/deceleration time and the residual vibration was discussed for the trapezoidal velocity profile by analyzing the time when the jerk happens. The natural frequency of the robot can be estimated in advance through the dynamics simulation. The simulation and experiment for both cases where the moving distance of the robot is long enough and the distance is short, are implemented in the 1-DOF linear robot. Simulation and experimental results show that when the acceleration/deceleration time is a multiple of the vibration period, the settling time and the amplitude of the residual vibration become less than when the time is not a multiple.

Application of Artificial Neural Networks to the prediction of out-of-plane response of infill walls subjected to shake table

  • The main purpose of this paper is to predict missing absolute out-of-plane displacements and failure limits of infill walls by artificial neural network (ANN) models. For this purpose, two shake table experiments are performed. These experiments are conducted on a 1:1 scale one-bay one-story reinforced concrete frame (RCF) with an infill wall. One of the experimental models is composed of unreinforced brick model (URB) enclosures with an RCF and other is composed of an infill wall with bed joint reinforcement (BJR) enclosures with an RCF. An artificial earthquake load is applied with four acceleration levels to the URB model and with five acceleration levels to the BJR model. After a certain acceleration level, the accelerometers are detached from the wall to prevent damage to them. The removal of these instruments results in missing data. The missing absolute maximum out-of-plane displacements are predicted with ANN models. Failure of the infill wall in the out-of-plane direction is also predicted at the 0.79 g acceleration level. An accuracy of 99% is obtained for the available data. In addition, a benchmark analysis with multiple regression is performed. This study validates that the ANN-based procedure estimates missing experimental data more accurately than multiple regression models.

Analysis of Merging Behaviors and Traffic Characteristics on Freeway Merging Areas According to Acceleration Lane Length (가속차로 길이에 따른 합류행태 및 합류부 교통특성 분석)

  • This paper analyzes the effects of acceleration lane lengths on the traffic characteristics of merging areas. Two merging areas, Suwon IC and Singal JC, which have remarkably different acceleration lane length were selected as field study sites. Traffic data were collected through dividing each merging area into several subsections. Not only conventional flow, speed and density data but also a newly introduced MOE, density variation were used to analyzed the characteristics of merging area. Singal JC which has longer acceleration lane than Suwon IC showed more severe congestion, and the cause of the results was figured out.

  • Software linear and exponential acceleration/deceleration algorithms for control of machine axes of motion in industrial robots and CNC machine tools are proposed. Typical hardware systems used to accelerate and decelerate axes of motion are mathematically analyzed. Discrete-time state equations are derived from the mathematical analyses for the development of software acceleration/deceleration algorithms. Synchronous control method of multiple axes of motion in industrial robots and CNC machine tools is shown to be easily obtained on the basis of the proposed acceleration/deceleration algorithms. The path error analyses are carried out for the case where the software linear and exponential acceleration/deceleration algorithms are applied to a circular interpolator. A motion control system based on a floating point digital signal processor (DSP) TMS 320C30 is developed in order to implement the proposed algorithms. Experimental results demonstrate that the developed algorithms and the motion control system are available for control of multiple axes and nonlinear motion composed of a combination of lines and circles which industrial robots and CNC machine tools require.

A study on the effects of active suspension upon vehicle handling (능동 현가장치가 차량의 핸들링에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구)

  • This paper develops a 7 DOF vehicle model to study the effects of the active suspension on ride. The model is used to derive a control law for the active suspension using a full state linear optimal control technique. A wheelbase preview type active suspension is also considered in the control law derivation. The time delay between wheelbases is approximated using Pade approximation technique. The ride model is extended to a 14 DOF handling model. The 14 DOF handling model includes lateral, longitudinal, yaw and four wheel spin motions in addition to the 7 DOF ride model. A control law which is derived considering only ride related parameters is used to study the effects of the active suspension on a vehicle handling. J-turn maneuver simulation results show that the active suspension has a slower response in lateral acceleration and yaw rate, a bigger steady state lateral acceleration and an oversteer tendency. Lane changing maneuver simulation results show that the active suspension has a little bigger lateral acceleration but a much smaller roll angle and roll motion. Braking maneuver simulation results show that the active suspension has a much smaller pitch angle and pitch motion.

  • Solar flares present a number of radiative characteristics indicative of kinetic processes of high energy particles. Proper understanding of the kinetic processes, however, relies on how well we can separate the acceleration from transport characteristics. In this paper, we discuss microwave and hard X-ray bursts as a powerful tool in investigating the acceleration and transport of high energy electrons. After a brief review of the studies devoted to the kinetic process of solar flare particles, we cast them into a simple formulation which allows us to handle the injection, trap, and precipitation of flare electrons self-consistently. The formulation is then taken as a basis for interpreting and analyzing a set of impulsive and gradual bursts occurred on 2001 April 6 observed with the Owens Valley Solar Array, and HXT/WBS onboard Yohkoh satellite. We quantify the acceleration, trap, and precipitation processes during each burst in terms of relevant time scales, and also determine ambient density and magnetic field. Our result suggests that it should be the acceleration property, in particular, electron pitch angle distribution, rather than the trap condition, that is mainly responsible for the distinctive properties of the impulsive and gradual flares.

  • As a theoretical background for this research, the literatures which focus on the rationale of teaching and learning of connecting with mathematics and science in calculus were investigated. And teaching and learning material of connecting with mathematics and science in calculus was developed. And then, based on the case study using this material, the research questions were analyzed in depth. Students could understand mean-velocity, instant-velocity, and acceleration in the experimenting process of constant acceleration movement. Also Students could understand fundamental ideas that instant-velocity means slope of the tangent line at one point on the time-displacement graph and rate of distance change means rate of area change under a time-velocity graph.

Vibration Characteristics of Cantilever Beam with a Crack (단일 크랙을 갖는 외팔보의 진동특성)

  • In this paper, the natural frequency and damping ratio are analyzed with the acceleration signal of an Euler-Bernoulli beam using the impact hammer test. The results are presented according to crack depth and position using the recursive least squares method. The results are compared and investigated with FEM analysis of CATIA. Both methods agree well with each other regarding the natural mode characteristics. The captured acceleration can be used for the calculation of the natural frequency and damping ratio using time series methods that are based on the measured acceleration. Using these data, a recursive time series model with the acceleration signal was configured and the behaviors of the natural frequency and damping ratio were investigated and analyzed. Finally, the results can be used for the prediction of crack position and depth under different crack conditions for an Euler-Bernoulli beam.

  • According to the delivery condition, the breakage of a product occurs when it is delivered to the customers. Therefore product's makers evaluate the durability under the delivery process by accelerated life testing. In order to conduct this accelerated life testing accurately, it is very important to identify the acceleration-factor exactly between on-road and accelerated life test condition. In this paper, the acceleration-factor is identified by applying linear damage summation law, rain-flow cycle counting and Dirlik theory under the conditions of the random vibration. And approximated FEM model of the connecting-pipe to the compressor is developed for fatigue analysis. This model is finally verified by comparing the experiment results to the numerical analysis results.
