  • This paper gives an overview of the requirements for electrical equipment in potentially explosive atmospheres and describes how these are applied to electrical machines and drives in hazardous areas. The method by which equipment can be shown to be safe in a whole range of gases, by testing in a single test gas, is covered. It is shown how the more recently introduced methods of protection for hazardous areas, increased safety and nonsparking, are ideally suited to AC machines and drives. A novel method of measuring the fullload temperature rise of electrical machines for hazardous, and other areas, without the need to connect a mechanical load to the machine's drive shaft is explained.

  • In this paper, a nonlinear controller is proposed for Doubly-Fed Induction Machine (DFIM) drives. The nonlinear controller is designed based on an adaptive backstepping control technique, using a fifth order model of an induction machine in the synchronous d & q axis rotating reference frame, whose d axis coincides with the space voltage vector of the main AC supply, and using the rotor current and stator flux components as state variables. The nonlinear controller can perfectly track the torque reference signal measured in the stator terminals under the condition of unity power factor regulation, in spite of the stator and rotor resistance variations. In order to make the drive system capable of operating in the motoring and generating modes below and above the synchronous speed, two level Space-Vector PWM (SV-PWM) back-to-back voltage source inverters are employed in the rotor circuit. It is confirmed through computer simulation results that the proposed control approach is effective and valid.

  • In this paper, do link ripple currents for three-phase ac/dc/ac PWM converters feeding adjustable speed ac machine drives are analysed in a frequency domain. The expression of the harmonic currents is developed by using switching functions of the converter and exponential courier series expansion. The effect of the displacement angle between the switching Periods of line-side converters and motor-side inverters on the dc link ripple currents is Investigated. Also, the influence of asynchronization of PWM is observed. The result of analysis is compared with frequency spectrum which results from PSIM simulation. The proposed analysis technique is useful to understand the principles of P% and to derive an equivalent model of the dc link capacitors in a high frequency range.

  • In the vector controlled induction machine drives, mechanical speed sensors such as shaft encoder and resolver have been used. However, the mechanical speed sensors present some problems and restrict the wide applications of high performance AC drives. This paper describes the vector control strategy with the speed estimation algorithm in which motor slip frequency is calculated. Also, the angle deviation of the rotor flux vector is calculated and instaneously compensated to keep the q axis flux zero in the rotationary reference frame.

  • This paper deals with the issue of position tracking control of a clamp-cylinder for injection moulding machine with electric-hydrostatic drives. A fixed displacement pump is utilized in combination with AC motor in order to directly control a clamp-cylinder. A clamp-cylinder may be required to operate under a variety of operating conditions. Therefore, robust control performance is important in position tracking control applications. In order to accommodate mismatches between the real plant and the model used for controller design, discrete-time sliding mode control is developed by combining a velocity feedforward loop. From tracking control experiments, it is shown that significant reduction in position tracking error is achieved through the use of sliding mode control.

  • The application of speed or position control technique in AC drives demands accurate position and velocity feedback information. Generally, resolver and absolute encoders are used as a velocity or position sensor. But they increase cost and when the sampling frequency is faster than sensoer's output frequency we can't Set exact information. In order to solve this problem this thesis proposes a speed and a position observer design for Permanent-Magnet Synchronous Motors(PMSM) specialty in low speed drives. Most literatures on this topic design the observer based on the field_oriented d_q model. But in this thesis, a new approach to machine dynamics is proposed. Since it is difficult to design the observer using the nonlinear model, the machine model is here linearlized at the operating point. The observer designed is implemented by software using Intel's 8097 microprocessor and verifies the proper performance of observer by simulation and experiment.

  • This paper analysis the transient performance of the modified excitation system using 4-quadrant chopper for a synchronous machine connected to HVDC system. Conventionally, capacitors are used to supply reactive power requirement at a strong converter bus. And the installation of a synchronous machine is essential in an isolated weak network to re-start after a shutdown of HVDC and to increase the system strength. However, a conventional static excitation system has some problems which are harmonic instability and the system stress due to overvoltage. To reduce these problems, the new excitation system, which has 4-quadrant chopper, is proposed. As the proposed system provides the capability to allow reverse current and isolate between AC network and excitation power, problems of overvoltage and harmonic instability can be solved. The investigation is performed and confirmed by the time domain digital simulation using PSCAD/EMTDC program.

  • This paper proposes and develops a new direct voltage control (DVC) approach. This method is designed to be applied in various applications for AC drives fed with a three-phase voltage source inverter (VSI) working with a constant switching time interval as in the standard direct torque control (DTC) scheme. Based on a very strong min(max) criterion dedicated to selecting the inverter voltage vector, the developed DVC scheme allows the generation of accurate voltage forms of waves. The DVC algorithm is implemented on a dSPACE DS1104 controller board and then compared with the space vector pulse width modulation technique (SVPWM) in an open loop AC drive circuit. To demonstrate the efficiency of the developed algorithm in real time and in closed loop AC drive applications, a scalar control scheme for induction motors is successfully implemented and experimentally studied. Practical results prove the excellent performance of the proposed control approach.

  • AC servo motor drives, Fara DS series, proposed in this paper can be effectively used in robots, CNC machine tools, and FA system with AC servo motors as actuators. The inverter of the AC servo drive consists of IGBT (Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor) which have high switching frequency. Noises and vibrations generated in variable speed control of AC servo motors can be greatly reduced due to their high switching frequencies. In the developed servo drive, maximum torque is always generated in the whole speed range by compensating phase shift, which results from the nonlinearies of the AC servo motor during abrupt acceleration and deceleration. Abundant protection functions are provided to prevent abnormal state of the servo motor, and furthermore diverse user options are considered provided for the effective application. The proposed AC servo motor drive is designed to minimize velocity variation with respect to external load, supply voltage, environmental temperature, and humidity, so can be widely used in the fields of factory automation including robots and CNC msachine tools.

  • In the vector-controlled induction machine drive, mechanical sensors restrict the wide applications of high performance AC drives. So in resent years, many papers have been presented which doesn't need mechanical sensors, named by sensorless vector control. But sensorless control has a few serious problem, one of which Is poor speed estimation in case of incorrect rotor resistance (Rr) information. This paper describes the stator flux orientation speed control strategy with the speed estimation algorithm. and the method of adapting Rr change due to thermal heating. By proposed method. We can acquire precise speed estimation and higher performance.
