A finite strip method is developed for fatigue reliability analysis of steel highway bridges. Flat shell strips are employed to model concrete slab and steel girders, while a connection strip is formed using penalty function method to take into account eccentricity of girder top flange. At each sampling point with given slab thickness and modulus ratio, a finite strip analysis of the bridge under fatigue truck is performed to calculate stress ranges at fatigue-prone detail, and fatigue failure probability is evaluated following the AASHTO approach or the LEFM approach. After the failure probability is integrated over all sampling points, fatigue reliability of the bridge is determined.

In this study, the ultimate strengths of 13 slab-column joints and 51 torsional beams were evaluated to verify the validity of the strut-tie model approach presented in the companion paper. In addition, the design of the bridge pier subjected to multiple load combinations with longitudinal and lateral loads was conducted. The analysis results were compared with those by the provisions of BS 8110, ACI 318, and AASHTO-LRFD. The design results of the bridge pier were also compared with those by the provisions of ACI 318's sectional design method and AASHTO-LRFD's strut-tie model method.

The bridge across Chambal River consists of two approach bridges and a cable stayed bridge with concrete girder and pylon. And the main bridge has been designed mainly based on AASHTO LRFD. This article covers design specifications from AASHTO LRFD, which are applied to load combinations and structural verification. And it also covers local standards applied in definition of loads such as live load, wind load, temperature, etc. In addition, the difference between applied design specifications and Korean standards is mentioned in this article briefly.

Prestress losses assumed for bridge girder design and deflection analyses are dependent on the concrete modulus of elasticity (MOE). Most design specifications, such as the American Association of State Highways and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) bridge specifications, contain a constant value for the MOE based on the unit weight of concrete and the concrete compressive strength at 28 days. It has been shown in the past that that the concrete MOE varies with the age of concrete. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of a time-dependent and variable MOE on the prestress losses assumed for bridge girder design. For this purpose, three different variable MOE models from the literature were investigated: Dischinger (Der Bauingenieur 47/48(20):563-572, 1939a; Der Bauingenieur 5/6(20):53-63, 1939b; Der Bauingenieur, 21/22(20):286-437, 1939c), American Concrete Institute (ACI) 209 (Tech. Rep. ACI 209R-92, 1992) and CEB-FIP (CEB-FIP Model Code, 2010). A typical bridge layout for the Dallas, Texas, USA, area was assumed herein. A prestressed concrete beam design and analysis program from the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) was utilized to determine the prestress losses. The values of the time dependent MOE and also specific prestress losses from each model were compared. The MOE predictions based on the ACI and the CEB-FIP models were close to each other; in long-term, they approach the constant AASHTO value. Dischinger's model provides for higher MOE values. The elastic shortening and the long term losses from the variable MOE models are lower than that using a constant MOE up to deck casting time. In long term, the variable MOE-based losses approach that from the constant MOE predictions. The Dischinger model would result in more conservative girder design while the ACI and the CEB-FIP models would result in designs more consistent with the AASHTO approach.

The AASHTO seismic base isolation design approach has been reviewed and modified to fit the nonlinear static analysis procedure for reinforced concrete structures in a simpler way. Such an adaptation may be possible for the fact that the reinforced concrete under development of damage due to earthquake loading keeps softening to result in period shifting toward longer side. The validity of the proposed approach was verified by applying it to the examples presented in the current state-of-the-practice approach.

Recently, many design codes including ACI 318-02 recommend the use of a strut-tie model approach for design of structural concrete with D-region(s). However, there are several unclear problems and shortcomings in the codes' strut-tie model approach. A grid strut-tie model approach was proposed to resolve these problems. In this study, the ultimate strengths of 17 deep beams, the most familiar type of D-regions, were evaluated for the validity check of the grid strut-tie model approach. The analytical results obtained by the approach are compared with those by the strut-tie model approach presented by CEB-FIP, AASHTO LRFD, and ACI 318-02.
The sight distance at unsignalized intersections is the one of the fundamental geometric design elements, and can ensure safety and efficient operations. Despite its importance, little research attention has been directed in Korea compared to developed countries such as European countries, the United States, and Japan. AASHTO ISD policies have been applied to the intersection design in Korea without any revise, which can produce unrealistic and unadoptable design values. Those values are emerged from several reasons because the AASHTO ISD has been calibrated based on the local data. Therefore the ISD hardly takes into account the local characteristics of Korea such as driving behavior. vehicular movement and roadway conditions. The objective of this study is to calculate the appropriate ISD values for unsignalized intersections in the urban area in Korea. In this study, we employed the ISD model of AASHTO(2001), which is based on gap acceptance theory and can account for and take the driving and roadway conditions in Korea into consideration. The approach can also consider the complex driving maneuvers at the intersections in a proper and simple manner. The results in this study show that the ISD design criteria currently used in Korea are more conservative(safer) than those of the USA. In other words, the ISD using field data collected in this study has generally smaller values than those in USA.

This study is carried out to analyze the design method and safety rate degree for IEC 61400-3, DNV-OS-J101, GL Wind, EUROCODE, AASHTO and domestic design standard used for offshore wind turbine foundation design. The findings will provide a design parameter for domestic offshore wind turbine foundation design. The design of the steel Support Structure of an offshore wind turbine can be based on either the Allowable Stress Design(ASD) approach or the Load and Resistance Factor Design(LRFD) approach. The design principles with the use of LRFD method are described with various limit states. A limit state is a condition beyond which a structure or part of a structure exceeds a specified design requirement. Design by the LRFD method is a design method by which the target component safety level is obtained by applying load and resistance factors to characteristic reference values of loads (load effects)and structural resistance. When the strength design of the steel Support Structure is based on the ASD approach, the design acceptance criteria are to be expressed in terms of appropriate basic allowable stresses in accordance with the requirements specified. After comparison an economics domestic offshore wind turbine foundation standard will be developed.

The anchorage zone of prestressed concrete members is a critical region where a large concentrated force due to prestressing by tendons is introduced. In this study, the ACI, AASHTO LRFD, CEB-FIP design criteria and the nonlinear strut-tie model approach are applied to the ultimate strength analysis of simple anchorage zones of 18 post-tensioned concrete members tested to failure. From the result of ultimate strength analysis, the advantages and disadvantages of each method are compared and discussed.

The current seismic design criteria of the Korea Design Specifications for Highway Bridge (KDSHB 2000) adopted the seismic design concept and requirements of the AASHTO specifications. In order to obtain full ductile behavior under seismic loads, i.e. when applied seismic force is larger than design flexural strength of column section, a response modification factor is used. For the moderate seismicity regions, a design based on required ductility and required transverse reinforcement might be a reasonable approach. Ductility demand design or performance based design might be an appropriate approach especially for regions of moderate seismic risk. The procedure and application of this design approach are presented in this paper.
