  • Impact extrusion is an economical and productive process that can replace the multistage deep drawing process for producing deep rectangular cases. In the current work, a three-dimensional finite element analysis of the impact extrusion process of a commercial purity aluminum alloy (AA1070) was performed to predict loads, material flow, and deformed shapes using the Hansel-Spittel rheology law, which describes the flow stress at various temperatures and strain rates. The role of various process parameters such as friction, clearance between punch and die, aspect ratio and thickness of billet on the process and the shapes was analyzed.

  • A commercial AA1070 alloy for electrical wire is severely deformed by drawing process in which a rod with an initial diameter of 9mm into is reduced to a wire of 2mm diameter. The drawn AA1070 wire is then annealed at various temperatures from 200 to 450 ℃ for 2h. Changes in microstructure, mechanical properties and electrical properties of the specimens with annealing temperature are investigated in detail. The specimen begins partially to recrystallize at 250 ℃; above 300 ℃ it is covered with equiaxed recrystallized grains over all regions. Fiber textures of {110}<111> and {112}<111> components are mainly developed, and {110}<001> texture is partially developed as well. The tensile strength tends to decrease with annealing temperature due to the occurrence of recovery or/and recrystallization. On the other hand, the elongation of the annealed wire increases with the annealing temperature, and reaches a maximum value of 33.3 % at 300 ℃. Electric conductivity of the specimens increases with annealing temperature, and reaches a maximum value of 62.6 %IACS after annealing at 450 ℃. These results are discussed in comparison with those for the other aluminum alloy.

  • The Hansel-Spittel constitutive model requires a total of nine parameters for flow stress prediction. Typically, the parameters are estimated by least squares methods for given tensile test measurements from a deterministic perspective. In this research we took a different approach, a probabilistic viewpoint, to see through the development of the Hansel-Spittel constitutive model. This perspective change showed that deterministic least squares methods are closely related to statistical maximum likelihood methods via Gaussian noise assumption. More intriguingly, this perspective shift revealed that the Hansel-Spittel constitutive model may leave out deterministic trends in residuals despite nearly perfect agreement with measurements. With tensile test measurements of AA1070 aluminum alloy, we demonstrated this deficiency of the Hansel-Spittel constitutive model, suggesting room for improvement.
