  • The 2.5 vol% TiNi/6061Al composites were fabricated by permanent mold casting. The microstructures and tensile test for the cold rolled composites with maximum 50% reduction ratio were investigated. In the case of TiNi fiber with 2mm interval in preform, the interface bonding of fabricated composites were good, interface diffusion layer of this composites was made by the mutual diffusion. Transverse section of TiNi fiber was decreased with increasing reduction ratio and longitudinal section of TiNi fiber showed multiple wave phenomenon. And the tensile strength of composites at 38% reduction ratio was the most high. In the case of over 38% reduction ratio, the decrease of the tensile strength was due to TiNi fiber rupture by excess working. The fracture mode was appeared brittle fracture with increasing reduction ratio.

  • The purpose of this study is to relieve the residual stress of Al6061 using cryogenic heat treatment. Experimental T6 and cryogenic heat treatments were carried out to define the convective heat-transfer coefficient, which was then applied in the finite-element method (FEM) to predict the residual stress. The predicted residual stress was compared with the residual stress measured by X-ray diffraction (XRD), and the results were in good agreement. The mechanical properties were estimated by measuring the electrical conductivity and hardness. In addition, the size and formation of the precipitations were observed by TEM and XRD analysis for both T6 and cryogenic heat treatments. The effects of the cryogenic heat treatment on the residual stress, mechanical properties, and precipitation of Al6061 alloys were thus confirmed.

  • TiNi alloy fiber was used to solve the problem of the tensile residual stress as the reinforced material. TiNi alloy fiber improves the tensile strength of composite by occurring compressive residual stress in the matrix using shape memory effect. In order to generate compressive residual stress in TiNi/Al6061 shape memory alloy(SMA) composite, 1, 3 and 5% pre-strains were applied to the composite in advance. It was also evaluated the effect of compressive residual stress corresponding to the pre-strain variation and the volume fraction of TiNi alloy. AE technique was used to clarify the microscopic damage behavior at high temperature and the effect of pre-strain in TiNi/Al6061 SMA composite. The results of the microscopic damage evaluation of TiNi/Al6061 SMA composite under various pre-strain using AE technique can be divided into three stage corresponding to the AE signals. AE counts and events were useful parameters to evaluate the fracture mechanism according to the variation of pre-strain. In addition, two dimensional AE source location technique was applied for monitoring the crack initiation and propagation in composite.

  • Formation behavior of aluminum anodic oxide (AAO) films on Al6061 alloy was studied in view of thickness, morphology and defects in the anodic films in 20 vol.% sulfuric acid solution at a constant current density of $40mA/cm^2$, using voltage-time curve, observation of anodized specimen colors and surface and cross-sectional morphologies of anodic films with anodization time. With increasing anodizing time, voltage for film formation increased exponentially after about 12 min and its increasing rate decreased after 25 min, followed by a rapid decrease of the voltage after about 28 min. Surface color of anodized specimen became darker with increasing anodizing time up to about 20 min, while it appeared to be brighter with increasing anodizing time after 20 min. The darkened and brightened surfaces with anodizing time are attributed to an increase in thickness of porous anodic oxide film and a chemical damage of the films due to heat generated by increased resistance of the film, respectively. Cross-sectional observation of AAO films revealed the formation of defects of crack shape at the metal/oxide interface after 15 min which prevents the growth of AAO films. Width and length of the crack-like defect increased with anodizing time up to 25 min of anodizing, and finally the outer part of AAO films was partly dissolved or detached after 30 min of anodizing, resulting in non-uniform surface structures of the AAO films.

  • This study produced a design curve and fatigue limit for a variation in volume ratio and reduction ratio of TiNi/Al composites. In many cases, stress-life curve does not indicate fatigue limit, so it was presented by probabilistic-stress-life curve. Goodman diagram was used to analyze the fatigue strength of materials with a finite life determined by repeated load and the fatigue strength of endurance limit with an infinite life. The fatigue experiment was conducted using the scenk-type plane bending specimen in same shape. The result of the fatigue test, which had been conducted under consistent stress amplitude, was examined. (i) The optimal condition for TiNi/Al in accordance with hot pressing (ii) Impacts of fatigue limit caused by a variation in reduction ratio and volume ratio of TiNi/Al composites (iii) Probability distribution for fatigue limit of TiNi/Al2024 and TiNi/Al6061.

  • In this study, the mechanical properties of friction stir welded A6061-T6 were evaluated. This material is used as a battery pack case material for electric vehicles. The Vickers hardness, tensile strength, and yield stress of the friction stir welding (FSW) specimen were all smaller than those of the base metal specimen. As the heat input increased, the nugget zone widened, and there were differences in hardness according to the base metal zone, heat affected zone, thermal-mechanical affected zone, and nugget zone. Mechanical properties were not proportional to heat input, and the thermal-mechanical affected zone on the advancing side was the smallest in all conditions. This is because the material flow speed increased on the advancing side, where the welding direction and the tool rotation direction were the same, forming a distinct boundary with mechanical deformation.

  • The Split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) test method, which is composed of three cylindrical bars, measuring devices and frames, is known for its reliable technique of acquiring the mechanical properties of specimens under a high strain rate. This paper demonstrates the processing of design and fabrication of SHPB. First of all, numerical analysis is applied in order to determine the design parameters of SHPB apparatus and verify the validity of design for a SHPB facility. Following this, SHPB apparatus were fabricated in accordance with acquired design parameters by simulation. In order to verify the validity of SHPB apparatus, experimental results using Al6061-T6 were compared with numerical data obtained from a corresponding simulation. The result of this comparative study demonstrates the applicability and validity of the fabricated apparatus.

  • A composite of rapidly solidified Al-6061 alloy powder with graphite particle reinforcements was prepared by ball milling and subsequent hot extrusion. The microstructure and mechanical properties of these composites were investigated as a function of milling time. With increasing milling time, the gas atomized initially and spherical powders became elongated with a maximum aspect ratio after milling for 30 h. Then, refinement and spheroidization were achieved by further milling to 70 h with a homogeneous and fine dispersion of graphite particles forming between the matrix alloy layers. The best compression and wear properties were obtained in the powder milled for 70 h, associated with the increased fine and homogeneous distribution of graphite particles in the aluminum alloy matrix.

  • Aluminum is a lightweight metal and has excellent properties with regard to conductivity, workability, and strength. It has been used in various industries owing to its economic benefits. To improve upon the mechanical properties and processability by adding various alloying elements to aluminum, improving the corrosion resistance and heat resistance by electrochemically forming a porous anodic film having a thickness and hardness on the surface of the aluminum alloy is crucial. In this study, the aluminum 6061 alloy was controlled by an anodization process in a 0.3M oxalic acid electrolyte at room temperature to investigate the oxide film parameters such as porosity and thickness depending on the modulating applied voltage and time. The anodizing experiment was performed by increasing the time from 1 h to 9 h at 2-h intervals at applied voltages of 50 V and 60 V.
