  • For a quadrilateral P, we consider the centroid $G_0$ of the vertices of P, the perimeter centroid $G_1$ of the edges of P and the centroid $G_2$ of the interior of P, respectively. We denote by M the intersection point of two diagonals of P. If P is a parallelogram, then we have $G_0=G_1=G_2=M$. Conversely, one of $G_0=M$ and $G_2=M$ implies that P is a parallelogram. In this paper, we show that $G_1=M$ is also a characteristic property of parallelograms.

  • Tris-HCl buffer solution is extensively used in biochemistry and molecular biology to maintain a stable pH for biomolecules such as nucleic acids and proteins. Here we report on the high-precision THz dielectric spectroscopy of a 10 mM Tris-HCl buffer. Using a double Debye model, including conductivity of ionic species, we measured the complex dielectric functions of Tris-HCl buffer. The fast relaxation time of water molecules in Tris-HCl buffer is ~20% longer than that in pure water while the slow relaxation time changes little. This means that the reorientation dynamics of Tris-HCl buffer with such a low Tris concentration is quite different from that of pure water.

  • Construction of a new cavern close to an existing cavern will result in a modification of the state of stresses in a zone around the existing cavern as interaction between the twin caverns takes place. Extensive plane strain finite difference analyses were carried out to examine the deformations induced by excavation of underground twin caverns. From the numerical results, a fairly simple nonparametric regression algorithm known as multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS) has been used to relate the maximum key point displacement and the percent strain to various parameters including the rock quality, the cavern geometry and the in situ stress. Probabilistic assessments on the serviceability limit state of twin caverns can be performed using the First-order reliability spreadsheet method (FORM) based on the built MARS model. Parametric studies indicate that the probability of failure $P_f$ increases as the coefficient of variation of Q increases, and $P_f$ decreases with the widening of the pillar.

  • In this article, an analytical-numerical approach is presented in order to determine the dynamic response of thin plates resting on multiple elastic point supports with time-varying stiffness. The proposed method is essentially based on transforming a familiar governing partial differential equation into a new solvable system of linear ordinary differential equations. When dealing with time-invariant stiffness, the solution of this system of equations leads to a symmetric matrix, whose eigenvalues determine the natural frequencies of the point-supported plate. Moreover, this method proves to be applicable for any plate configuration with any type of boundary condition. The results, where possible, are verified upon comparison with available values in the literature, and excellent agreement is achieved.

  • A previous adapter have a single-ouput, however, a demand of a multi-output adapter increase in the recent industrial site. In order to satisfy the demand, in this research, we implement a programmable high efficiency multi-output adapter. The basic structure of the adapter introduced in this paper is a sort of flyback. The way for producing the reference voltage of the adapter proposed is similar to the way in the general flyback implemented with TL431. In addition to the basic concept of the design, however, we introduce a digital variable resistor, AD5246BKSZ10-RL7 and a microcontroller for changing a programmable multi-output. It makes output be variable that the digital variable resistor change the reference voltage of the adapter by order of the microcontroller. The adapter output voltage is controllable in the range of 20V by the user, and the power efficiency is proven to be 85%.

  • In the auto-guiding system for obtaining a long exposure astrophotography, CCD camera is usually used for measuring guide errors which are affected by optical dispersion and mechanical disturbances. In this paper, a discrete time dynamic model and a performance index are proposed for analysing the auto-guiding system. The optimal gain for proportional control is derived considering the optical dispersion and the disturbances. Some experiments are provided to illustrate that the optimal control gain is lower as the optical dispersion is higher.

  • Since pooling is a popular scheme in many areas to attain operational excellence, many researchers investigated the performance of pooling systems. However, rare research could be found on pooling with game situation which has much applicability to real world phenomenon. We analyze the performance of noncooperative pooling system with two servers having different sharing capacity. We investigate the sensitivity of the advantage of capacity pooling on the variation of system parameters, including sharing capacity numbers, pooling probability, pooling strategy and traffic intensity. As a result, we suggest an efficient control policy which facilitate the performance of pooling in a game situation.

  • Soil-water retention curve (SWRC) contains key information for the application of unsaturated soil mechanics principles to engineering practice. The SWRC variables are commonly used to describe the hydro-mechanics of soils. Generally, these parameters are determined using the graphical method which can be time consuming. The SWRC is highly dependent on the pore size distribution (PSD). Theoretically, the PSD obtained by mercury intrusion porosimetry test can be used to determine some SWRC variables. Moreover, the relationship between SWRC and shrinkage curve has been investigated. A new method to determine total SWRC variables directly without curve-fitting procedure is proposed. Substituting the variables into linear SWRC equations construct SWRC. A good agreement was obtained between predicted and measured SWRCs, indicating the validity of the proposed method for unimodal SWRC.

  • Alginate microfibers were fabricated by self assembly of alginate monomers exuded from alginate beads (~2 mm in diameter) containing calcium phosphate. Upon incubation of the beads in cell culture medium at $37^{\circ}C$ for a few days, fibers with a diameter of about $7{\mu}m$ started to sprout from the bead surface, and these grew up to about 10 mm in length, resulting in the beads being covered with fiber forests similar to chestnut bur. The combined system of the alginatebased microfiber forest and bead is considered to be useful as a novel 3-dimensional scaffold for cell culture and tisssue growth.

  • MR fluid can change viscosity in the presence of a magnetic field. A characteristic of MR fluid is reduced scattering during jetting. For these reasons a MR fluid jet polishing system can be used for ultra-precision polishing. In the current paper, the polishing path was calculated considering the aspherical lens profile equation and the experimental conditions for the MR fluid jet polishing system. Then the polishing of an aspherical lens mold core using the MR fluid jet polishing system with the calculated path control was made and the results were compared before and after polishing.
