  • Objectives: This study examined the influence of different sizes of spoons (normal spoon, 8.3 cc vs small spoon, 4 cc) on eating rate, energy intake and the satiety levels of female college students. Methods: Twenty four healthy female college students participated in this study once a week for 2 weeks. Two hundred ten grams of cooked rice and 250 g of beef shank soup with a normal spoon and same amount of rice and soup with a small size spoon were served to the same participants over two consecutive weeks. After each lunch, the eating rate, energy intake, and the satiety levels were measured. Results: Results showed that the subjects who were using a small spoon ate less beef shank soup (149.0 kcal) (p < 0.01) and had lower total energy intake (423.3 kcal) (p < 0.05) than using a normal spoon (178.7 and 461.1 kcal, respectively). Also, the meal time (15.7 min) (p < 0.01), a serving per one spoon (8.6 g) (p < 0.001), and eating rate (27.9 g/min) (p < 0.001) of those who used a small spoon were significantly different than that of those who used a normal spoon (13.6 min, 12.5 g and 35.7 g/min, respectively). However, despite consuming less energy at lunch, the level of satiety after eating from the small spoon was not significantly different from the normal spoon immediately after, 1 hour after and 2 hour after lunch. Conclusions: Our results revealed that students were able to control their eating rate by using a small spoon and they could feel full enough even though they eat less. In conclusion, eating rate decrease by using a small spoon may play an important role in food intake.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effectiveness of a nonviolent communication program on nurse's interpersonal competence, job stress and spiritual wellness. This study was a inequality similar to the control group experimental design study of repeated measurements before and after. The data for this study were collected from June 1 to October 20, 2013 from 29 clinical nurses. The self-administered questionnaires used consisted of questions regarding general characteristics, interpersonal competence, job stress and spiritual wellness. The results were: 1. For interpersonal competence, the interaction between time and group was significant (F = 7.726, p = 0.002). 2. For job stress analysis, the interaction between time and group was not significant (F = 0.142, p = 0.851). 3. For spiritual wellness, the interaction between time and group was significant (F = 31.355, p < .001). These results suggest that the nonviolent communication program had a positive effect on rejected clinical nurse's interpersonal competence and spiritual wellness, but not on job stress. A follow-up replication study will be necessary.

  • Zr-benzendicarboxylate structure, UiO-66 was prepared in 1-L batch scale by using a unique sonochemical-solvothermal combined synthesis method. The produced UiO-66 showed uniform particles of ca. $0.2{\mu}m$ in size with the BET surface area of $1,375m^2/g$ in high product yield (>95%). The UiO-66 showed 198 and 84 mg/g $CO_2$ adsorption capacity at 273 K and 298 K, respectively, with excellent $CO_2$ selectivity ($CO_2:N_2=32:1$) at ambient conditions. The isosteric heat of $CO_2$ adsorption varied from 33 to 25 kJ/mol as the adsorption progressed. The UiO-66 tested for xylene isomer separation in a liquid-phase batch mode confirmed preferential adsorption of the adsorbent for o-xylene over m-, and p-xylene.

  • Purpose: The aim of our study was to evaluate the therapeutic effects of walking and turning plus treadmill training on the functional balance and walking ability of individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD). Methods: Twenty-four participants with Stage 1 to 3 ($2.13{\pm}0.64$) PD based on the Hoehn and Yahr scale were randomly allocated to the experimental group (EG) and control group (CG), with 12 participants in each group. The measured outcomes included the motor subscale of the unified Parkinson's disease rating scale (UPDRS-M), the Berg balance scale (BBS), the Timed Up and Go (TUG) test, the 10-meter walk test (10MWT), and the 6-minute walk test (6MWT). Results: Pre-to-post intervention improvements were noted for all the outcome measures for both groups (p < 0.05). Post intervention, there was a significant improvement in the EG compared to the CG for the following measured outcomes (p < 0.05): UPDRS-M (p = 0.021; 95% CI, 0.081-6.519), BBS (p = 0.042; 95% CI, 1.375-4.541), TUG (p = 0.034; 95% CI, -3.315--0.143), 10MWT (p = 0.011; 95% CI, -2.032--0.289), and 6MWT (p = 0.002; 95% CI, 24.39-91.273). Conclusion: Our study suggests that walking and turning plus treadmill training improves balance and walking compared to treadmill training only in patients with PD.

  • In this paper a new conductivity modulated power transistor called the Lateral Insulated Gated Bipolar Transistor which included n+ ring and p-channel gate is presented. A new lateral IGBT structure is proposed to suppress latch-up and to improve turn off time by imploying n+ ring and p-channel gate and verified by MEDICI. The simulated I-V characteristics at $V_{G}$=15V show that the latch up occurs at $V_{A}$=18V and 6.9$\times$10$^{-5}$ A/${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ for the proposed LIGBT while the conventional LIGBT latches at $V_{A}$=1.3V and 1.96${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$10$^{-5A}$${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. It is shown that turn off characteristic of new LIGBT is 8 times than that of conventional LIGBT. And noble LIGBT is not n+ buffer layer because that It includes p channel gate and n+ ring. Therefore Mask for the buffer layer isn’t needed. The concentration of n+ ring is and the numbers of n+ ring and p channel gate are three for the optimal design.n.n.n.n.

  • Aloin [1,8-Dihydroxy-10-(${\beta}$-D-glucopyranosyl)-3-(hydroxymethyl)-9(10H)-anthracenone], is a natural anthraquinone from aloe. It has been shown to have antioxidant and anticancer effects in various types of human cancer cells, but the anticancer effects of aloin in human colorectal cancer cells HT-29 have not been elucidated. In this study, possible mechanisms by which aloin exerts its apoptotic action in cultured human colorectal cancer HT-29 cells were investigated. The results of 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay shows that treatment with aloin (0, 100, 200, 300 and $400{\mu}M$) reduced cell viability in a concentration-dependent manner in HT-29 and showed no effects on cell proliferation in A375SM and AGS cells. In addition, it was confirmed that apoptotic body was significantly increased as shown by 4',6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI) staining, and increased apoptosis rate by flow cytometry in HT-29 cells treated with aloin (0, 200 and $400{\mu}M$). We confirmed by western blotting that aloin activated Bax (pro-apoptotic), cleaved-poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) and caspase-3, -8 and Bcl-2 (anti-apoptotic) were not changed compared with the control. Aloin induced up-regulation of phospho-p38 and down-regulation of phospho-extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK)1/2. Therefore, aloin suppressed the growth inhibitory effects by the induction of apoptosis in human colorectal cancer cells and has potential as a cancer preventive medicine.

  • The goal of this study was to evaluate the growth performance of crossbred strains using Korean native chicken (KNC). The data were collected from 2012 through 2013 at Poultry Science Division, National Institute of Animal Science, Korea. The number of chicks analyzed in this study was 375. Crossbred were (A) $R{\times}S$, (B) $D{\times}H$, (C) $D{\times}S$, (D) $C{\times}Y$ and (E) $Y{\times}H$. The fertility rates of strains were 94.9% in crossbred A, 91.9% in crossbred B, 91.8% in crossbred C, 89.7% in crossbred D and 93.8% in crossbred E, respectively. The fertility was highest in crossbred A, but crossbred C showed the lowest (p<0.05) based on the hatchability. The crossbreds B and C exhibited a superior performance on body weight gains during growing stages but crossbred D showed the lowest (p<0.05). The feed intake was to the pattern of body weight. The feed intake of crossbred D was significantly lower than other crossbreds. Also, feed conversion ratio of crossbred D showed the lowest (p<0.05). Egg production ratio of crossbred D was significantly higher compared to the other crossbreds. These results suggest that the development of new crossbreds of commercial Korean Native Chickens should be required for better performance.

  • In the present study, offsprings of 14 sows were used to evaluate the effect of fermented milk substituted for creep feed to analyze its effect on growth performance, diarrhea score and blood profiles. The piglets of sows were randomly allocated into 1 of 2 treatments (1 treatment separated piglets of 7 sows). The dietary treatments includes: CF (creep feed) and FM (fermented milk). The CP and FM diets were given from 3 d after piglets were born to the day of weaning (21 d after piglets were born). No significant difference (P>0.05) were observed in number of born piglets, weaning pigs, survival rate, body weight of piglets at d 0, 7, 14, and 21, ADG and ADFI. At d 21, piglets fed with CP had a higher (P<0.05) IgG compared with piglets fed with FM. No significant difference (P>0.05) was observed in WBC among the treatments at d 21. At d 6, piglets fed with CP had a lower (P<0.05) number of diarrhea piglets compared to piglets fed with FM. In conclusion, FM substituted for CP had no adverse effect on growth performance in lactating piglets.
