  • This study investigated the acaricidal and repellent activities of various plant extracts and Cnidium officinale-derived materials against Haemaphysalis longicornis. Among the 24 methanolic plant extracts, C. officinale showed the highest acaricidal activity (93.3%) against H. longicornis. Platycodon grandiflorus, Phytolacca americana, Magnolia denudata, Houttuynia cordata, C. officinale, and Pueraria montana showed significant differences in their repellent activity. Consequently, the activity of solvent-fractionated materials and the derived material of the C. officinale, was investigated and a 90% acaricidal effect was observed three days after hexane fraction treatment, indicating that the repellent response was statistically significant. Butylidenephthalide, which is a C. officinale-derived compound, showed 90% acaricidal activity seven days after treatment. Additionally, all H. longicornis moved to the untreated area in the t-tube olfactometer experiment, confirming the repellent activity of butylidenephthalide. Therefore, the results of this study suggest the use of C. officinale crude extract and butylidenephthalide as potent acaricidals and repellents against H. longicornis, respectively.

  • The valley forests at Songgyesa-Motbong-Wolhatan Area in Deogyusan National Park were studied to investigate forest structure in relation to aspect and altitude of the slope. Density, mean DBH, mean height and basal area of the tree and subtree layers in the north-facing slope were greater than those in the south-facing slope. The impotance percentage of Fraxinus mandshurica and Carpinus cordata increased with increasing elevation while those of Quercus serrata and Quercus aliena decreased. Species diversity of the north-facing slope was 1.362 and that of the south-facing slope was 1.242. There was a tendency that number of species and species diversity decreased with increasing elevation. The result of cluster analysis for the tree and sub-tree layer indicated that the studied forests were classified into broad-leaved tree species community at the low and middle elevation belts of the south-facing slope and the north-facing slope, Fraxinus mandshurica-Quercus mongolica community at the high elevation belts of the south-facing slope and the north-facing slope and Quercus mongolica community at the top area. There were significantly positive correlations in the importance percentages among Quercus serrata, Betuzo davurica and Tilia amurensis. Carpinus laxiflora was significantly correlated with Cornus controversa, Tilia amurensis and Lindera obtusiloba. There was significantly negative correlation between Fraxinus mandshurica and Pinus densiflora.

  • This study was conducted to investigate and analyze the characteristics of the plant community structure of vegetation distributed on the western slope and ridge connecting Mt. Noja to Mt. Gara. This basic research was executed not only to restore and manage forest vegetation, but also to monitor the trend of change in the long term. As a result of classifying the communitise in 86 survey quadrats, the Pinus thunbergii-Platycarya strobilacea comm. and P. thunbergii-P. densiflora comm. were distributed around the lowlands. The Carpinus tschonoskii-Deciduous broad-leaved comm., Styrax japonicus-Deciduous broad-leaved comm., Acer pictum subsp. Mono-Deciduous broad-leaved comm., Deciduous broad-leaved comm., and Zelkova serrata comm. appeared in the valley and all stone areas. Quercus serrata comm., Q. serrata-S. japonicus comm., S. japonicus-Carpinus cordata comm., Euonymus oxyphyllus comm. were classified as being distributed on steep slopes with relatively high altitude. According to the succession trend of the forest, evergreen conifers will be transition to deciduous broad-leaved trees. However, deciduous broad-leaved arboreous forests, such as Carpinus tschonoskii, zelkova serrata, and Acer pictum subsp. Mono, were considered to maintain their current succession stage because not only the stratified structure was developed over about 50 years tree age, but also ecologically stabilized. As environmental factors, it was analyzed that altitude, pH, content of clay and silt, Mg++, Ca++, etc. directly or indirectly affect the distribution of plant communities.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of herbal medicine complex (HMC) containing Camellia sinensis L., Duchoesna chrysantha, Houttuynia cordata Thunberg, Poncirus trifoliata Rafinesque on skin inflammation and atopic dermatitis. First, we examined the anti-inflammatory effect of HMC in TNF-α induced human keratinocytes (HaCaT cell). Real-time PCR and western blotting were performed to evaluate the expression of inflammatory cytokines (e.g., iNOS, COX-2, IL-6, IL-8) mRNA and protein. Four-weeks old male NC/Nga mice were treated with 1% 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB) solution and used as an atopic dermatitis mice model. And, HMC (200 mg/kg or 400 mg/kg) was administered directly into the stomach of mice for 4 weeks, and blood or serum analysis, tissue staining were performed after oral gavage. As a result HMC inhibited the mRNA expression of iNOS, COX-2, IL-6, and IL-8, which had been increased by TNF-α in HaCaT cells. In addition, the protein expression was also significantly suppressed in the same way as the mRNA expression results. The in vivo experiment results showed that, HMC administration reduced thickening of the epidermis and infiltration of eosinophil into the skin stratum basale compared to DNCB treatment. In addition, HMC administration significantly reduced the inflammatory cytokines (IL-4, IL-5, IL-6, and IL-13) production and immunocyte (white blood cell, lymphocyte, neutrophil, and eosinophil) count compared to DNCB treatment. Moreover, the serum IgE and histamine level was decreased by HMC administration. These results suggest that HMC can be used as effective herbal medicine extract for skin inflammation and atopic dermatitis. And this study may contribute to the development of the herbal medicine-based drug for the treatment of skin inflammation and atopic dermatitis.

  • This research was to establish the fundamental materials for the preservation and multiple-purpose management of forest vegetation of Dong Hwa Sa area located in the south facing slope of Mt. Pal-Gong. Analysis of forest vegetation of this area was studied by the method of Gentaro Toyohara, based on ZM School method and Pfister. The results obtained were summarized as follows. (1). Forest vegetation in this area divided into mountain forest and valley forest. (2). Mountain forest divided into A. Pinus densiflora community, B. Carpirtus laxiflora community, C. Quercus mongolica community. (3). Valley forest was formed mostly of Zelkova serrata community. (4). Piraus densiflora community divided into 1. Pines densiflora typical group, 2. Pines densiflora-Alnus hirsuta group, 3. Pines densiflora-Ilex macropoda group. (5). Quercus mongolica community divided into 1. Pinus densiflora-Carpinus cordata group, 2. Prunus sargentii-Hydrangea serrata for. acuminata group, (6). Zelkova serrata community divided into 1. Acer mono group, 2. Vine plant group. A vegetation analysis based on concepts and methods developed by Robert, D. Pfister and Gentaro Toyohara was considered to be effective on providing a guiding principle for a multiple-purpose management of forestry and a three-dimensional utilization of forest, but it is not easy for us to utilize such a analysis method because we are not rich in the materials of analysis of vegetation to our forest. Thus, It is necessary that we should collect much materials to various parts of forest in order that may utilize this method of analysis of vegetation.
