Utilizing the mathematical materials in elementary mathematics education is known to increase the learners' creativity and interests for mathematics. Although the effects of mathematical materials have been frequently researched, a practical plan and a process to utilize the mathematical materials has been rarely researched. The dependence on the mathematical materials is tested by the students' responses to the mathematical problems in the class that allowed to use mathematical materials. The activities in the text book are reorganized to seven chapters for utilizing the mathematical materials. The dependence on the mathematical materials when solving the mathematical problems is investigated by the textbook, students' answers, and handouts. The conclusions of this study are: First of all, the activities using mathematical materials are reorganized within the mathematics education curriculum. The high interests are also investigated in all the learning level of learners. Second, the learners in the high learning level use the mathematical materials for their needs and the correction of their mistakes. The dependence on mathematical materials is lowest compared to the other level learners. Third, the learners in the mid learning level also use the mathematical materials for their needs and their mistakes, but are often confused when utilizing the materials. Fourth, the learners in the low learning level show their interests, and enthusiasm in the mathematical materials themselves. Their interests help to solve mathematical problems. The dependence on the materials is higher than the other level learners, but the dependence is not shown only for the low level learners.
The purpose of this study is a comparison of proficient level and below basic level students' mathematical achievement in the National Achievement Evaluation and Assessment(NAEA). For the purpose, this study compared the proficient level and below basic level students' ratios, students' mathematical achievement of contents area and behavioral area in 6th, 9th, and 11th grades. This study found the change of proficient level and below basic level students' ratios, and the proficient level and below basic level students' characteristics on mathematical achievement of contents area and behavioral area in 6th, 9th, and 11th grades.
The purpose of this study is to analyse how a mathematically gifted student constructs a nested signification model of three signs, while he abstracts the solution of a given NIM game. The findings of a qualitative case study have led to conclusions as follows. In general, we know that most of mathematically gifted students(within top 0.01%) in the elementary school might be excellent in constructing representamen and interpretant But it depends on the cases. While a student, one of best, is making the meaning of object in general level of abstraction, he also has a difficulty in rising from general level to formal level. When he made the interpretant in general level with researcher's advice, he was able to rise formal level and constructed a nested signification model of three signs. We suggested 3 considerations to teach the mathematically gifted students in elementary school level.
There have been many discussions of teaching and learning mathematics through modeling activities in mathematics education research community. Although there has been some agreement regarding modeling activity as an alternative way to support mathematics teaching and learning, there is still no clear consensus on these issues. This paper reports a case study which aims to identify ways to design modeling tasks and instruction to foster meta-level learning, and investigate how modeling activities can facilitate meta-level learning. From the results of teaching experiment, this study examines the potential of modeling activities in mathematics teaching and learning.
The purpose of the study was to investigate and develop a practical approach to integrating student-driven mathematical problems posing in mathematics instruction. A problem posing activity was performed during regular mathematics instruction. A total of 540 mathematical problems generated by students were recorded and analysed using systemic procedures and criteria. Of the problems, 81% were mathematically solvable problem and 18% were classified as error type problems. The Mathematically solvable problem were analysed and categorized according to the complexity level; 13% were of a high-level, 30% mid-level and 57% low-level. The error-type problem were classified as such within three categories: non-mathematical problem, statement or mathematically unsolvable problem. The error-type problem category was distributed variously according to the leaning theme and accomplishment level. The study has important implications in that it used systemic procedures and criteria to analyse problem generated by students and provided the way for integrating mathematical instruction and problem posing activity.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the mathematical disposition and mathematical communication level of elementary school students in the process of applying mathematical journal writing activities. For this study, 21 third grade students in elementary school were observed when they participated in mathematical journal writing activities while studying number and operation area. According to the Mathematical disposition pre-test and post-test results, mathematical confidence, mathematical flexibility, mathematical will, and mathematical reflection increased and it was statistically proved. Expression and explanation level of the mathematical communication writing area also increased as the mathematical journal writing activity continued. Thus, mathematical journal writing activities can help to enhance the core competencies of the 2015 revised mathematics curriculum while make students 'to develop and transform mathematical expressions' and 'to express oneself'. Also, it provides implications of including active writing activities such as mathematical journal writing activities into mathematics classroom. Furthermore, the change in mathematical communication level according to mathematical disposition level was not statistically significant. Therefore, when providing active writing activities including mathematical journal writing activities into classroom, it is necessary to understand students' individual characteristics and to encourage communication to be active rather than giving feedback based on one's mathematical disposition level.
This study attempted to investigate how to students show high-level mathematical thinking in math classes. This paper describes how to setup the task for lead to a high - level of thinking out students and what efforts are required while a teacher tried to maintaining students's high-level cognition during the tasks implemented. The researcher as teacher analyzed the tasks of length measurement unit in 2-Ga elementary math textbooks, modified and created math tasks demanded students' high-level cognition, made instruction plans, and implemented those tasks maintaining the levels of cognitive demand of tasks. After that, the researcher reflected and analyzed the levels of cognitive demand of tasks of instruction and factors that cause to change intended high-level cognitive demand. After reflection, second roof of action research was conducted to 2-Na length measurement unit. This paper includes those results and reflections of practitioner.
The purpose of this study is to see correlation between parental psychological control and volition control in mathematics learning of 6th grade of elementary school. This study has carried out a survey for 371 male and female students in 6th grade of elementary school in Gyeongnam. We analyzed the collected data statistically, and the results are as follows. First, there was a significant difference in the level of volition control in mathematics learning between male and female students. The level of volition control in mathematics learning was found to be higher in female groups than in male groups. Second, there was no significant difference in father and mother's psychological control level perceived by 6th grade elementary school students. Third, there was a significant negative correlation between parental psychological control and their children's level of volition control in mathematics learning. In this study, by examining the correlation between parental psychological control and volition control level in mathematics learning of elementary school students, the higher the parental psychological control, the lower the level of volition control of their children. So, that it is important to have a parenting attitude that respects their children's emotion and expression.
Small Group Collaborative Instruction in school settings has been endorsed by many educational experts over the years. Some studies found that learners greatly benefit from one another through communication and interaction with their peers. These studies previously indicated improvement of a learner‘s academic ability as well as the application of the affective domain when using this type of instruction. Lower-level students with limited mathematical abilities improved their problem-solving and conceptual thinking skills when tasked to work with other learners. On the other hand, the effectiveness of this process was questioned to be less evident with higher-level performers. Therefore, this study was designed to observe the efficacy of Small Group Collaborative Instruction on higher-level students and to explore their learning process as they interact with and teach lower-level students. This study observed that higher-level students use high-level mathematical thinking skills when helping lower-level students, and they improved problem-solving ability as well as communication skills.
Mathematics education for social science majors at the college level could be a totally different subject from mathematics education for mathematics majors. We discuss goals, curriculum and effective teaching of mathematics for social science majors with a focus on business, management and economics at the college level.
