A Study of Optical Properties of Intraocular Lenses and of Measurement of the Index of Reflection for an Unknown Liquid

  • In general, such methods as interferometers or wavefront sensors are commonly used for testing of an optical system and optical components. In these cases, the surrounding environments are unlikely to affect the measurements. On the other hand, intraocular lenses of hydrophilic materials with special properties experience a certain difficulty in testing the optical properties. An intraocular lens is dried in the air, which causes deformation and changes the optical characteristics such as index of refraction and thickness. Thus, it is hard to measure the optical characteristics of an intraocular lens by using common methods. In this study, a special structure is used for measuring of the transmission wavefront aberration and effective focal length of an intraocular lens of hydrophilic materials by using a Shark-Hartmann sensor among the various measuring methods. As an application of this measuring method, this study shows a simple method to measure the index of refraction of unknown liquids with a plano-convex lens with a well known index of refraction. Also, this method is used to measure the optical properties of a plano-convex such as index of refraction and curvature by using a liquid with a well known index of refraction.

초등학생들의 체중신장지수(WLI)와 치아우식증에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Weight Length Index and Dental Caries of Elementary School Students)

  • In Korea, changes in children's diet patterns accelerate their physical growth and development: frequent snacking has been presumed to be a major cause of increasing dental caries. The present study attempts to clarify the relationship between the physical development of growing children and their tooth decay. For this purpose, 632 six-grade children in 4 elementary school located in Urban(Seoul) and Rural(Po-gok, Yang-In) were classified into three groups based on the Weight Length Index(WLI), known to reflect the nutritional conditions of school-age children, and the relationship was analyzed between each group and the variables considered to be related with dental caries. The result is as follows: The average weight and height of the male is $44.88{\pm}10.89$ kg, $148.49{\pm}7.33$ cm and female is $43.35{\pm}9.60$ kg, $149.23{\pm}6.73$ cm, respectively, which are in the similar level with the Korean Physical Standard. The classification of the children by the WLI reveals a relatively high distribution of over-weighted child ren - 212 persons, 335% of the entire population. The DMFT Index was a little high in the rural area(3.15 teeth in urban and 3.31, in rural). Among the groups of children classified by the WLI, the over-weight group have the highest DMFT index(3.69 teeth). The relationship between the frequency of taking in basic nutrients and the DMFT index is also found: the relationship is not evident in case of the foods containing rich calcium, protein, as well as fruits and vegetables. But, in the protein-rich food, higher frequency of its intake means significantly lower DMFT index in the normal-weight group of the urban children. In case of carbohydrate, higher frequency of its intake means significantly higher DMFT index in all the groups of the rural children. The DMFT index has some correlations with the relevant variables: the index has a positive correlation with the frequency of snacking, and a negative correlation with the economic status. That is, the higher the frequency of snacking is, and the lower the economic status is, the higher the DMFT index may be. In the logistic multiple regression analysis conducted with the presence of DMFT as a dependent variable, only the frequency of tooth brushing is turned to be a variable affecting the presence of either decayed, missing, or filled teeth. Based on the above result, the variables affecting the DMFT index are a time spent on eating, frequency of intake of protein and carbohydrate for a week, frequency of snacking, regular dental check-ups, preventive behaviors for oral health(fluoride gargling, tooth brusing after each meal, proper tooth brushing method). These variables have a relationship with the DMFT index, but the degree is somewhat different between the groups classified either by the region or by the WLI. Therefore, appropriate nutrition management should be conducted according to the individual's nutritional conditions when the services like nutritional education are provided based on the closely-examined characteristics of each target group. And, at the same time, oral health education should be strengthened, and its importance should also be emphasized so that people can pay attention to their own oral health.

기상학적 가뭄지수와 수문학적 가뭄지수의 비교 (Comparison of Meteorological Drought and Hydrological Drought Index)

  • 본 연구는 기상학적 가뭄지수가 수문학적 가뭄에 대한 모사정도를 검토하였다. 기상학적 가뭄지수 중에서 강수량을 변수로 하는 SPI(Standardized Precipitation Index)와 강수량 및 증발산량을 변수로 하는 SPEI(Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index)를 이용하였고, 수문학적 가뭄 평가를 위하여 월 총 유입량과 하천수 가뭄지수인 SDI(Streamflow Drought Index)를 계산하여, 최종적으로 기상학적 가뭄지수와 수문학적 가뭄지수와의 상관정도를 분석하였다. 월별 상관계수 비교결과, 지속기간 270일에 기상학적 가뭄지수와 월 총 유입량과 상관정도가 가장 높아서 0.67로 나타났고 기상학적 가뭄지수로 SDI와의 상관정도는 0.72~0.87이었다. 연별 극한값을 비교한 결과, 월 총 유입량의 최저값과 기상학적 가뭄지수의 연관성은 거의 확인되지 않았다. 다만 SDI와 SPEI가 매우 높은 상관정도를 보였다. 기상학적 가뭄지수로 수문학적 극한가뭄에 해석하는 데에 한계가 있는 만큼 수문 가뭄해석이 목적이라면 유량자료가 직접 활용될 수 있는 가뭄지수가 필요하다.

플래시메모리-SSD의 인덱스 연산 성능 향상을 위한 압축된 핫-콜드 클러스터링 기법 (A Compressed Hot-Cold Clustering to Improve Index Operation Performance of Flash Memory-SSD Systems)

  • SSD는 데스크탑 및 이동형 컴퓨터의 저장 장치를 지원하는 우수한 미디어이다. SSD는 비휘발성, 낮은 전력 소모, 빠른 데이터 접근 속도 등의 특징으로 데스크탑 및 서버용 데이터베이스의 핵심 저장 요소가 되었다. 하지만, 일반 RAM 메모리에 비하여 상대적으로 느린 연산 특성을 고려하여 기존의 전통적인 인덱스 관리 기법을 개선할 필요가 있다. 이를 위하여, 본 논문은 CHC-Tree 라고 하는 압축된 핫-콜드 클러스터링에 기반하는 새로운 인덱스 관리 기법을 제안한다. CHC-Tree는 인덱스 노드를 핫-콜드 세그먼트로 분류하며, 인덱스 노드의 키와 포인터를 압축한다. 콜드 세그먼트의 비활용노드의 오프셋 압축으로 느린 쓰기연산의 부담을 줄인다. 또한, 실험 결과를 통하여 기존의 B-Tree 기반의 인덱스 관리 기법보다 인덱스 검색 연산에서 26%, 인덱스 수정 연산에서 23% 이상 우수함을 확인하였다.

Evaporative Stress Index (ESI)를 활용한 북한의 위성영상기반 농업가뭄 평가 (Satellite-based Evaporative Stress Index (ESI) as an Indicator of Agricultural Drought in North Korea)

  • North Korea has frequently suffered from extreme agricultural crop droughts, which have led to food shortages, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The increasing frequency of extreme droughts, due to global warming and climate change, has increased the importance of enhancing the national capacity for drought management. Historically, a meteorological drought index based on data collected from weather stations has been widely used. But it has limitations in terms of the distribution of weather stations and the spatial pattern of drought impacts. Satellite-based data can be obtained with the same accuracy and at regular intervals, and is useful for long-term change analysis and environmental monitoring and wide area access in time and space. The Evaporative Stress Index (ESI), a satellite-based drought index using the ratio of potential and actual evaporation, is being used to detect drought response as a index of the droughts occurring rapidly over short periods of time. It is more accurate and provides faster analysis of drought conditions compared to the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI), and the Palmer Drought Severity Index (PDSI). In this study, we analyze drought events during 2015-2017 in North Korea using the ESI satellite-based drought index to determine drought response by comparing with it with the SPI and SPEI drought indices.

레벨 프리페칭 기법을 이용한 향상된 주기억장치 상주형 색인구조 (IpCSB+ - tree : An Enhanced Main Memory Index Structure Employing the Level Prefetching Technique)

  • 주기억장치 상주형 색인구조에서는 2차 캐쉬 실패가 성능에 매우 큰 영향을 미친다. 기존에 제안된 주기억장치 상주형 색인구조들은 2차 캐쉬 실패를 고려하긴 했지만 여전히 트리의 각 레벨을 접근할 때는 2차 캐쉬 실패가 발생한다. 본 논문에서는 이러한 문제점을 인식하고 트리 순회 시 각 레벨을 방문할 때도 캐쉬 실패가 발생하지 않는 주기억장치 색인구조를 제안한다. 제안하는 색인구조인 IpCSB+-트리는 다음 레벨에서 방문할 가능성이 있는 노드들을 프리페치하여 다음 레벨을 방문할 때도 캐쉬 실패가 발생하지 않도록 한다. 또한, 기본적인 구조는 노드그룹 개념을 이용하여 노드의 팬-아웃을 증가시키는 CSB+-트리에 기반하지만 CSB+-트리의 단점인 분한 비용의 증가문제를 해결하기 위한 방법을 제안한다. 성능평가를 통해 기존의 색인구조와 비교하여 제안하는 색인구조의 우수성을 보인다.

객체지향 지리정보 데이터베이스를 위한 색인기법 (An Indexing Technique for Object-Oriented Geographical Databases)

  • 객체지향 지리정보 데이타베이스 시스템의 설계시 중요한 고려 사항은 저장된 데이타에 대한 좋은 접근 전략을 갖도록 하는 것이다. 객체지향 시스템에서는 이러한 목적으로 여러가지 색인 기법이 개발되었으나, 이러한 기법들은 객체지향 데이타 모델의 집단화 계층이나 상속 계층 중 어느 한 가지만을 고려하는 경우가 대부분이었다. 본 연구에서는 포인터 체인 디렉토리를 이용하여 객체지향 지리 데이터베이스의 집단화 및 상속 계층을 접근하는 데 효율적인 색인 기법을 제안하였다. 제안된 기법의 효용성을 기존의 색인 기법들과 다양하게 비교하였으며, 저장비용과 검색비용 측면에서 그 성능을 시뮬레이션한 결과를 제시하였다.

Evaluation of Geographic Indices Describing Health Care Utilization

  • Objectives: The accurate measurement of geographic patterns of health care utilization is a prerequisite for the study of geographic variations in health care utilization. While several measures have been developed to measure how accurately geographic units reflect the health care utilization patterns of residents, they have been only applied to hospitalization and need further evaluation. This study aimed to evaluate geographic indices describing health care utilization. Methods: We measured the utilization rate and four health care utilization indices (localization index, outflow index, inflow index, and net patient flow) for eight major procedures (coronary artery bypass graft surgery, percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty, surgery after hip fracture, knee replacement surgery, caesarean sections, hysterectomy, computed tomography scans, and magnetic resonance imaging scans) according to three levels of geographic units in Korea. Data were obtained from the National Health Insurance database in Korea. We evaluated the associations among the health care utilization indices and the utilization rates. Results: In higher-level geographic units, the localization index tended to be high, while the inflow index and outflow index were lower. The indices showed different patterns depending on the procedure. A strong negative correlation between the localization index and the outflow index was observed for all procedures. Net patient flow showed a moderate positive correlation with the localization index and the inflow index. Conclusions: Health care utilization indices can be used as a proxy to describe the utilization pattern of a procedure in a geographic unit.

Development and validation of a novel screening instrument to prioritize the orthodontic referral of developing malocclusion in children: The index for interceptive orthodontics referral

  • Objective: The absence of a guideline to refer to developing malocclusions appropriately, may be a contributing factor to the inadequacy of timely interceptive orthodontics provision. This study aimed to develop and validate a new orthodontic grading and referral index to be used by dental frontliners to prioritize the orthodontic referral of developing malocclusion in children based on its severity. Methods: A cross-sectional study involving clinical assessment with 413 schoolchildren aged between 8.1 and 11.9 years was conducted in 2018. All the presenting malocclusion was listed and graded based on a few dental guidelines to produce the draft index. The validity and reliability of the draft index were tested using twenty study models. Face and content validation was carried out using the content validation index and Modified Kappa Statistics. Results: Fourteen dental and occlusal anomalies were identified as components of malocclusion and three grades of referral (monitor, standard, urgent) were included in the final index. The scale-level content validity index average value of 0.86 and 0.87 was obtained for content and face validation, respectively. There was moderate to excellent agreement in the Modified Kappa Statistics for both validations. Excellent inter- and intra-assessor agreement was obtained. The new index displayed valid and reliable scores. Conclusions: The Index for Interceptive Orthodontics Referral was developed and validated for the dental frontliners to identify and prioritize the developing malocclusion in children based on its severity and refer for orthodontic consultation to increase the possibility for interceptive orthodontics.
