  • A modified rectangular fin is analyzed by two-dimensional analytic method and finite difference method. Relative error of heat loss from the modified rectangular fin between analytic method and finite difference method is presented. Comparisons of fin effectiveness and heat loss between a modified rectangular fin and a plane rectangular fin are made as a function of the non-dimensional fin length and wing height for different positions of wings by using analytic method. The ratio of the incremental rate of heat loss to that of the area of a modified rectangular fin is shown as a function of the wing height. One of the results shows that performance of a modified fin is more improved as the wing approaches the fin root.

  • A modified asymmetric rectangular fin is analysed using the two-dimensional separation of variables method. This modified rectangular fin is made by attaching the wing on the top side of a rectangular fin. Heat loss from each side of this modified rectangular fin is calculated. The relative increasing ratio of heat loss between a modified rectangular fin and a rectangular fin is presented as a function of dimensionless fin volume, wing height and the location of the wing. Especially, to show the remarkable effect of the wing on the heat loss, the relative increasing ratios of heat loss between two different volume increasing methods are listed.

  • The dimensionless heat loss from a modified asymmetric rectangular fin is investigated as a function of the fin top and tip Biot numbers using the two-dimensional separation of variables method. A rectangular fin is modified by attaching the wing on the top side of the fin. Fin effectiveness and efficiency with the variation of the location of the wing and the width of the wing are presented. The relationship between top surface Biot number and bottom surface Biot number as well as the relationship between the dimensionless wing height and the location of the wing for equal amount of heat loss is also discussed.

  • Numerical analysis on the three-dimensional laminar flows (Re=1000) and heat transfer in a rectangular channel with punched longitudinal vortex generator have been conducted to explore the heat transfer enhancement and the combined effect of the angle of attack ${\alpha}$ and the lovour angle ${\beta}$. Rectangular winglets have been used as vortex generators. Velocity and temperature fields and spanwise averaged Nu and friction factor were presented. Enhancement of heat transfer and flow loss penalty are evidenced. The results show performance characteristics allowing a reduction in heat transfer surface area of 62% for fixed heat duty and for fixed pumping power compared with that of channel flow without vortex generator. However, adding lovour angle to the vortex generator shows no positive effect on the heat transfer enhancement.

  • Experiment was performed to study the characteristics of pressure drop of multi-channel tubes for automotive condenser using HFC-134a. Single phase liquid and two phase flow pressure drop were measured in one rectangular plain and three micro-fin tubes with 10 channels. Data are presented for the following range of variables: mass flux(200 to $600kg/m^2s$), and inlet saturation pressure of the refrigerant(1.0 and 1.6MPa). For subcooled flow, pressure drops are 10% and 12% higher than that predicted by the Petukhov equation with hydraulic diameter respectively. Two-phase flow pressure drop are compared with the previously proposed correlations, and well predicted by modified correlation that was derived from Traviss correlation. and correlated within -30~+20%. Also experimental data are correlated within -56%~+18% by Webb's prediction method based on the equivalent mass velocity concept originally proposed by Akers et al.
