  • In this paper, an approach of automatically finding and modifying the most appropriate orthogonal array (GO) is suggested and applied to a new structural optimization procedure with two steps. GO is motivated by the situation where finding a proper orthogonal array from the tables in the literature is difficult or impossible. Now the Taguchi method is made available for various numbers of variables and levels. In the two-step structural optimization, the Taguchi method equipped with GO and a shape optimization using the finite differencing method is consecutively applied. The existence or non-existence of an element can be taken as a factor level and this feature is utilized finding the best topology from a set of potential topologies suggested from the user's expertise. This greatly enhances applicability and one can expect a better result than the case in which each step is applied independently because these steps are complementary each other.

  • This study empirically examines the proposition that the domestic fundamentals of a nation can emerge as absorptive capacity factors to reap the benefits of inward FDI. The study is contextualized in Asia, set from1982 to 2017, and data is grouped into low-income and lower-middle-income economies, in comparison to high-income and upper-middle-income economies, catering to different geographical regions within Asia. The investigation is based on a series of absorptive capacity factors such as infrastructure, human capital, domestic credit, and health indicator. The methodological analysis is premised on dynamic panel structure and employs the Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) estimation technique. The empirical findings suggest that that the infrastructure variable appears to be the major absorptive capacity factor for both groups of countries. The health indicator, on the other hand, can help reap the benefits of inward FDI, but only if the threshold level is met. The selected economies must achieve this threshold level to reap the benefits of FDI. To absorb the benefits of inward FDI, countries must be proactive in providing sound infrastructure and implementing proper healthcare measures.

  • Parameterization has been one of very important research subjects in several application areas including computer graphics. In the parameterization research, the problem of mapping 3D polygonal model to 2D plane has been studied frequently, but the previous methods often fail to handle complicated shapes of polygonal surfaces effectively as well as entail distortion between the 3D and 2D spaces. Several attempts have been made especially to reduce such distortion, but they often suffer from the problem when an arbitrary rectangular surface region on 3D model is locally parameterized. In this paper, we propose a new local parameterization scheme based on the projection level set method. This technique generates a series of equi-distanced curves on the surface region of interest, which are then used to generate effective local parameterization information. In this paper, we explain the new technique in detail and show its effectiveness by demonstrating experimental results.

  • In this paper, we propose a method of energy level, node degree and selection information based CDS(Connected Dominating Set) construction algorithm for more efficient routing in ad-hoc wireless networks. Constructing CDS in ad-hoc wireless network, it is necessary to make more efficient algorithm that is faster, more simple and has low power consumption. A CDS must be minimized because nodes in the CDS consume more energy in order to handle various bypass traffics than nodes outside the set. It is better not to reconstruct CDS after constructing the most efficient CDS. To overcome this problem, we proposed the CDS construction algorithms based on EL+ND+Sel method. We compared and estimated the performance in each situation of EL + ND and EL + ND + Sel.

  • This paper introduces the first vital area identification (VAI) process for the physical protection of nuclear power plants (NPPs) during low power and shutdown (LPSD) operation. This LPSD VAI is based on the 3rd generation VAI method which very efficiently utilizes probabilistic safety assessment (PSA) event trees (ETs). This LPSD VAI process was implemented to the virtual NPP during LPSD operation in this study. Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) had developed the 2nd generation full power VAI method that utilizes whole internal and external (fire and flooding) PSA results of NPPs during full power operation. In order to minimize the huge burden of the 2nd generation full power VAI method, the 3rd generation full power VAI method was developed, which utilizes ETs and minimal PSA fault trees instead of using the whole PSA fault tree. In the 3rd generation full power VAI method, (1) PSA ETs are analyzed, (2) minimal mitigation systems for avoiding core damage are selected from ETs by calculating system-level target sets and prevention sets, (3) relatively small sabotage fault tree that has the systems in the shortest system-level prevention set is composed, (4) room-level target sets and prevention sets are calculated from this small sabotage fault tree, and (5) the rooms in the shortest prevention set are defined as vital areas that should be protected. Currently, the 3rd generation full power VAI method is being employed for the VAI of Korean NPPs. This study is the first development and application of the 3rd generation VAI method to the LPSD VAI of NPP. For the LPSD VAI, (1) many LPSD ETs are classified into a few representative LPSD ETs based on the functional similarity of accident scenarios, (2) a few representative LPSD ETs are simplified with some VAI rules, and then (3) the 3rd generation VAI is performed as mentioned in the previous paragraph. It is well known that the shortest room-level prevention sets that are calculated by the 2nd and 3rd generation VAI methods are identical.

  • This paper proposes a synchronous switching technique for a Vienna rectifier that uses carrier-based pulse width modulation (CB-PWM). A three-phase Vienna rectifier, similar to a three-level T-type converter with three back-to-back switches, is used as a PWM rectifier. Conventional CB-PWM requires six independent gate signals to operate back-to-back switches. When internal switches are operated synchronously, only three independent gate signals are required, which simplifies the construction of gate driver circuits. However, with this method, total harmonic distortion of the input current is higher than that with conventional CB-PWM switching. A reactive current injection technique is proposed to improve current distortion. The performance of the proposed synchronous switching method and the effectiveness of the reactive current injection technique are verified using simulations and experiments performed with a set of Vienna rectifiers rated at 5 kW.

  • The impact, spreading and recoil processes of a nanoparticle-laden droplet impacting on a horizontal solid surface are numerically investigated by solving the conservation equations for mass, momentum, energy and mass fraction. The liquid-air interface is tracked using a level-set method that is modified to include the effect of contact angle hysteresis at the wall. The species transport equation including a thermal diffusion term is additionaly solved to determine the nanoparticle distribution in the droplet. The effect of nanoparticle concentration and contact angle are also studied.

  • As XML is widely used with the development of internet, many researches on the XML storage and query processing have been done Several index techniques have been proposed to efficiently process XML path queries. Recently, structural join has received murk attention as a method to protest the path query. Structural join technique process a path query by identifying the containment relationship of elements. Especially, it has an advantage that we can get the result set by simply comparing related elements only instead of scanning whole document. However during the comparison process, unnecessary elements that are not included in the result set can be scanned. So we propose a new technique, the level structural join. In this technique, we use both the relationship and the level distribution of elements in the path query. Using this technique, we tao improve the performance of query processing only by comparing elements with specific level in the target inverted level.

  • Workers in nuclear power plants are likely to be exposed to radiation from various geometrical sources. In order to evaluate the exposure level, the point-kernel method can be utilized. In order to perform a dose assessment based on this method, the radiation source should be divided into point sources, and the number of divisions should be set by the evaluator. However, for the general public, there may be difficulties in selecting the appropriate number of divisions and performing an evaluation. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to develop an algorithm for dose assessment for arbitrary shaped sources based on the point-kernel method. For this purpose, the point-kernel method was analyzed and the main factors for the dose assessment were selected. Subsequently, based on the analyzed methodology, a dose assessment algorithm for arbitrary shaped sources was developed. Lastly, the developed algorithm was verified using Microshield. The dose assessment procedure of the developed algorithm consisted of 1) boundary space setting step, 2) source grid division step, 3) the set of point sources generation step, and 4) dose assessment step. In the boundary space setting step, the boundaries of the space occupied by the sources are set. In the grid division step, the boundary space is divided into several grids. In the set of point sources generation step, the coordinates of the point sources are set by considering the proportion of sources occupying each grid. Finally, in the dose assessment step, the results of the dose assessments for each point source are summed up to derive the dose rate. In order to verify the developed algorithm, the exposure scenario was established based on the standard exposure scenario presented by the American National Standards Institute. The results of the evaluation with the developed algorithm and Microshield were compare. The results of the evaluation with the developed algorithm showed a range of 1.99×10-1~9.74×10-1 μSv hr-1, depending on the distance and the error between the results of the developed algorithm and Microshield was about 0.48~6.93%. The error was attributed to the difference in the number of point sources and point source distribution between the developed algorithm and the Microshield. The results of this study can be utilized for external exposure radiation dose assessments based on the point-kernel method.
