  • In concrete structural design provisons, two methods are normally provided to control deflection; direct method and indirect method. It is more efficient to use the indirect deflection control by which the span/depth ratio is limited not to exceed an allowable deflection limit. Because actual deflections are affected by many causes, it is complicated to evaluate actual deflections. In this study, limit span/depth ratios are derived from the deflection calculated directly at the serviceability limit state in RC members. The deflection is obtained from using average curvature, which depends on materials model used. The main variables examined are tension stiffening effect, concrete strength, cross section size and compressive steel ratio. It could be appeared that more analytical consistency is secured to use the 2nd order form of tension stiffening effect. And the limit span/depth ratio is dependent on material strength, tensile and compressive steel ratio but it is independent on cross-section size.

  • Ultra-high strength concrete (UHSC) encased steel columns are receiving growing interest in high-rise buildings owing to their economic and architectural advantages. However, UHSC encased steel columns are not covered by the modern fire safety design code. A total of 14 fire tests are conducted on UHSC (120 MPa) encased steel columns under constant axial loads and exposed to ISO-834 standard fire. The effect of load ratio, slenderness, stirrup spacing, cross-section size and concrete cover to core steel on the fire resistance and failure mode of the specimens are investigated. The applicability of the tabulated method in EC4 (EN 1994-1-2-2005) and regression formula in Chinese code (DBJ/T 15-81-2011) to fire resistance of UHSC encased steel columns are checked. Generally, the test results reveal that the vertical displacement-heating time curves can be divided into two phases, i.e. thermal expansion and shortening to failure. It is found that the fire resistance of column specimens increases with the increase of the cross-section size and concrete cover to core steel, but decreases with the increase of the load ratio and slenderness. The EC4 method overestimates the fire resistance up to 186% (220 min), while the Chinese code underestimates it down to 49%. The Chinese code has a better agreement than EC4 with the test results since the former considers the effect of the load ratio, slenderness, cross section size directly in its empirical formula. To estimate the fire resistance precisely can improve the economy of structural fire design of ultra-high strength concrete encased steel columns.

  • These days the circular cross section cofferdam has been frequently used for the earth retaining structures or cut off wall such as ventilating opening, intake tower in cofferdam, shaft for emergency. By the arching effect, the circular cross section type cofferdam has more advantage than a polygon cofferdam in terms of the structural forces and moment. This paper shows the proper approach to analyze the circular cross section cofferdam using 2D Finite Element Method (FEM) for the circular stiffener (ring beam) evaluation. Besides, the various shapes of cofferdam indluding circular cross section have modeled the 3D Finite Element Mothod (FEM). The circular cross section cofferdam shows the minimum reaction force compared with the other shapes of cofferdam.

  • The aleurone layer in maize is crucial as it contains essential nutrients such as minerals, vitamins, and high-quality proteins. While most of the maize varieties are known to possess a single aleurone layer, several multi-aleurone layer mutants and landraces have been suggested for hierarchical genetic control of aleurone development. Conventional microscopy analysis often involves using immature seeds or sampling only a portion of the kernel sample, and whole kernel section analysis using a microtome is technically difficult and time-consuming. Additionally, the larger size of maize kernels posed challenges for comprehensive cross-sectional analysis compared to other cereal crops. Consequently, this study aimed to develop an efficient method to comprehensively understand the aleurone layer characteristics of the entire cross-section in maize. Through observations of diverse maize genetic resources, we confirmed irregular aleurone layer patterns in those with multiple aleurone layers, and we discovered a landrace having multiple aleurone layers. By selectively identifying genetic resources with multiple aleurone layers, this method may contribute to efficient breeding processes in maize.

  • In this study, we compared the physical and chemical properties evaluation for each size in the SUS316L metal powder produced by water atomization and gas atomization. and we analyzed the experimental data in order to find the basis of a suitable metal powder (SUS316L) for DED (Direct Energy Deposition) processing. Also it evaluated the properties of each layered surface and cross section according to the number of deposition and deposition speed. In the result of optical microscopy measurements, the metal powder by water atomization was the crack generated between the deposition layer, the deposition layer was poor quality. However, metal powder by gas atomization was obtained a relatively good deposition results than metal powder by water atomization.

  • This study develops size sections and specifications for females 7-18 years old. The specifications will contribute to the development of precise virtual models that represent basic data for the size alteration of 3D virtual models. A total of 33 items from the $5^{th}$ Size Korea data set were adopted and analyzed. Two representative factors (Obesity and Height Factors) were identified through a factor analysis of the 33 items. Waist circumference and stature were selected as representative variables for Obesity and Height Factors, respectively, and conducted cross tabulations between waist circumference and height for the age groups of 7-12 and 13-18 year-olds. Size sections were developed for the development of 3D models based on the results. A regression analysis then developed size specifications for each section with independent variables of waist circumference and height as well as dependent variables of reference body size. Subsequently, Obesity Factors were better explained by waist circumference and Height Factors were better explained by stature. Finally, size specifications for each section were developed.

  • Recently, road tunnels have become longer and the plans for long and deep road tunnel have been underway in urban areas. These long and deep tunnel excavations include NATM and TBM. Shield TBM is applied to around 80% of traffic tunnels in Europe, and approximately 30% of them in other developed countries. However, as much of equipment is imported from foreign countries at high prices and distribution rate of TBM tunnel is considerably low in Korea, NATM excavation method is commonly used. To increase TBM tunnel, it is necessary to do assure economic feasibility with the supply-demand of TBM equipment. For this, the selection of standardized TBM diameter is urgently needed. Therefore, the study aims to estimate the standardized optimum section properties of TBM by examining TBM excavation cross section utilization depending on the volume of traffic, the number of lane and its cross-section type(single or double deck), and ventilation system.

  • A design method is proposed to minimize the scattering cross section(SCS) of the electromagnetic cloak based on the quasi-conformal mapping. Often times in such cloaking structures, parts that require refractive index below one are approximated with free space because of the difficulty involved with realization. In this process, preformance degradation is inevitable. In this work, the size of the cloak is optimized to compensate for the deterioration, and thus to minimize the scattering cross section of a diamond shaped conductor. Proposed cloak is fabricated using a 3D printer, and verified by measuring the cloaking performance of a diamond shaped aluminum target.

  • Using a model system that can compare the before and after of canal preparation in the same tooth, we measured the area of the cross section, and canal wall thickness of the distal portion of the mesial root of the mandibular molar, and compared the amount of reduction in the canal using hand flared preparation the Gates-Glidden drill flared preparation according to the changes in the MAF. The results were as follows. 1. After canal preparation, the canal wall thickness had no significant difference between the hand flared preparation and Gates-Glidden drill flared preparation. 2. The canal wall thickness, after canal preparation, there was no significant difference between the sizes of the MAF. 3. The area variation range of each cross section of root had no significant difference between MAF size and methods of canal preparation. 4. After canal preparation, the frequency of the canal wall thickness under 0.5mm showed 3.5mm below the furcation to be the most frequent with statistical significance(p<0.05). 2mm below the furcation and 5mm below the furcation followed but there was no statistical significance. 5. The danger zone of the mesial root of the mandibular molar seems to be around 3.5mm.
