  • The purpose of this study is to analyze and explain the formation and character of presbyterian missionary architecture in Andong area from 1900 to 1945, which we may call "the modem architecture of Korea". I have surveyed and analyzed the 26 buildings. and so, the major findings of this study are as follows. Firstly, the phase of building is 1) buy the existing Korean traditional building and lot-a thatch roofed house. 2) modify the existing Korean traditional building-a thatch and tile roofed hose. 3) build the Korean style building-a thatch and tile roofed building. 4) build the Western style Building-a timber structured and zinc roofed building. 5) build the Western style Building- a masonry structured and zinc(or tile)roofed building. Secondly, the character of building is 1) In the Korean traditional building, the missionaries change the function for their purpose-office, church, school, hospital. they modify the existing Korean timber frame construction by introducing the material-brick, plaster, glass, Japanese style timber etc .. they live in the Korean existing residential area. 2) In the Western style building, the missionaries build the house according to their life style. they build the timber structured building-church, and the masonry (brick or stone)structured building such as a house, church, school and dormitory, and hospital. their building located on the hill depart from the existing Korean residential area.

  • Every year new tall buildings are being conceived, designed, and built with new schemes. Thus it is important to explore the factors that affect tall building design. Thus it is important to explore the tall building design factors. The planning and design of tall buildings require different criteria than those that exist in regular size buildings. Tall buildings are uniquely expressed by their structural systems where exterior esthetic and requirements of space drive the form and composition of the structural systems. Therefore the exploration of design factors is the key to achieve optimum building systems. Optimization as mentioned here is associated with the efficiency of the different building systems. To achieve an optimal system, there is a need for an understanding of the factors that affect on overall tall building design such as planning module, building function, lease span, floor-to-floor-height, building height (aspect ratio), structural system, environmental systems. In this paper a statistical approach will be used and will be based on data collected from the practice through a rigorous survey taken. This information is tabulated and analyzed. The major target of investigation will be lease span related to space requirement in the tall building planning. Factors related to lease spans, such as function, floor-to-floor height, planning module, building height, overall plan dimension, and plan ratio (building geometry), will be looked at carefully. IN conclusion, this approach of optimization can introduce a preliminary design guideline for tall building projects. The purpose of the paper should shed some light on the optimum tall building design criteria.

  • Creativity is one of the most popular keyword used in today's society due to it's important role as the major post modern economic drive force. Richard Florida calls the group of people who work in this creative industry as the 'Creative Class' and this theory has affected many organizations and cities. However, little is known about the work environment of this class, so many designers find it difficult to understand how they may encourage creativity in the actual physical setting. Therefore the purpose of this research is to understand the major characteristics of this 'Creative Class' and their working styles in order to develop a theoretical framework for the creative work environment and present a case study of NHN Company main office building. The researcher has indicated three major characteristics of the creative work environment such as 'Individuality', 'Socialization', and 'Experiential' and through the developed framework found that in NHN building 'Socialization' through overlapping territories and programs, spatial openness were used as key methods of encouraging creativity. It is hoped that this research may be used as a useful guide in designing various types of creative work environment for the future.

  • Since the peak seismic response of a base-isolated building strongly depends on the characteristics of the imposed seismic ground motion, the behavior of a base-isolated building under different seismic ground motions is studied, in order to better assess their effects on its peak seismic response. Specifically, the behavior of a typical steel building is examined as base-isolated with elastomeric bearings, while the effect of near-fault ground motions is studied by imposing 7 pairs of near- and 7 pairs of far-fault seismic records, from the same 7 earthquake events, to the building, under 3 different loading combinations, through three-dimensional (3D) nonlinear dynamic analyses, conducted with SAP2000. The results indicate that near-fault seismic components are more likely to increase the building's peak seismic response than the corresponding far-fault components. Furthermore, the direction of the imposed earthquake excitations is also varied by rotating the imposed pairs of seismic records from 0◦ to 360◦, with respect to the major construction axes. It is observed that the peak seismic responses along the critical incident angles, which in general differ from the major horizontal construction axes of the building, are significantly higher. Moreover, the influence of 5% and 10% accidental mass eccentricities is also studied, revealing that when considering accidental mass eccentricities the peak relative displacements of the base isolated building at the isolation level are substantially increased, while the peak floor accelerations and interstory drifts of its superstructure are only slightly affected.

  • Buildings are responsible of major energy consumption globally. In addition, they are linked to thermal comfort. The need to provide comfort becomes more crucial in schools as they are the place where students learn, and develop their skills. This research aims to investigate the energy responsiveness of new and traditional school building design, where major variation in form, amount of external walls and glazing are different. The research focused on indoor microclimate condition of selected schools in the city of Jeddah where the climate is hot and humid using advanced tools for monitoring. The research uses advanced energy equipment to measure several aspects such as floor temperature, roof temperature, globe temperature and other factors which can lead to predictable thermal comfort of users. The findings suggest that a larger area of glazing shielded from sunlight has a greater influence on both indoor condition and general thermal sensation. The finding also suggests that the glazing ratio is a major contributor on indoor thermal pattern which can result in an increase in temperature profile between from $7-10^{\circ}C$. The findings of this research can assist in the improvement in the design of the prototype school building in hot and humid climate.

  • The nuclear power plant(NPP) construction is a mammoth project, which requires a huge construction budget and the long construction duration of about 7 years. Recently there is a trend to shorten the construction period, to save the construction cost and to ensure the competitiveness through adopting the open top construction method. In this method, the major equipment are moved into the building through its top, and the internal works of the reactor building are being in process without installation of a dome roof.

  • Tornadoes are one of the world's deadliest natural phenomena. They are characterized by short life span and danger. It has been observed through post-damage surveys that localities with large numbers of buildings suffer major damage during a tornado attack resulting in huge loss of life and property. Thus,it is important to study interfering buildings exposed to tornado-like vortices. The present study focuses on external and internal pressures developed on building models exposed to translating tornado-like vortices in the presence of an interfering building model. The effects of translating speed and swirl ratio of a tornado-like vortex on external and internal pressures for a principal building in the vicinity of an interfering building are investigated. Results indicate that external and internal pressures are enhanced or reduced depending on the location of the interfering building with respect to the principal building.

  • In spite of The exterior design of buildings has a remarkably significant value in terms of public aspect some exposed architectural equipments spoil the appearance of building. The design elements of exposed architectural equipments were partially changed and assessed in the semantic differential method. Thus the aesthetically favorable impression and values of public interest were able to be increased. The reasons why those hideous exposed architectural equipments were constructed, seemed to be as follows; the builders' selfishness, the citizens' ignorance and the immature social institutions that cannot restrict undesirable design efforts. Building equipments located outside are not classified as major elements in building regulations and thus can be installed and altered without any limitations even though they have great effects on the shape and colors of a building. So we have more interest in exposed architectural equipments and more deliberation of exterior design of a building.
