  • A numerical study on combustion in a fluidized bed is based on three dimensional mixing and dispersion phenomena in the bed owing to the bubble growth in the vertical direction. As fluidizing velocities increase, bubble diameters increase, which activates the fuel dispersion in the bed. The combustion rates, however, reduce due to the decrease of gas exchange rates between bubble and emulsion phases. Fuel distributions in the bed are dependent on fluidizing velocities, equivalence ratios, fuel particle diameters, fuel feeding points, and the number of fuel feeders.

  • The excessive cracking of RC cantilever decks, which often requires special attention for structural engineers, is studied using a three-dimensional crack analysis model. The model is based on a fracture energy approach for analyzing cracks in concrete, and the numerical analysis is carried out using a modified load control method. The problem of excessive cracking is then studied with four different span-ratios. Based on the numerical results, the crack behavior with respect to the patterns of crack propagation, dissipation of the fracture energy, and effects on the structural integrity are discussed. The mechanisms which cause the excessive cracking are also explained.

  • The formulas offered so far on the settlement of raft footings provide only a rough estimate of the actual settlement. One of the best ways to make an accurate estimation is to conduct 3-dimensional finite element analyses. However, the required procedure for these analyses is comparatively cumbersome and expensive and needs a bit more expertise. In order to address this issue, in this study, a raft footing settlement formula was developed based on ninety finite element model configurations. The formula was derived using multi-parameter exponential regression analyses. The settlement formula incorporates the dimensions and the elastic modulus of a rectangular raft, vertical uniform pressure and soil moduli and Poisson's ratios up to 5 layers. In addition to this, an equation was offered for the estimation of average deflection of the raft. The proposed formula was checked against 3 well-documented case studies. The formula that is derived from 3D finite element analyses is useful in optimising the raft properties.

  • In the present study, the effect of cold reduction ratio on the spheroidization rate of SK85 high carbon steel sheet was investigated. High carbon steel sheet fabricated by POSCO was soaked at $850^{\circ}C$ for 2 hr in a box furnace and then treated at $570^{\circ}C$ and $670^{\circ}C$ for 10 min in a salt bath furnace followed by water quenching to obtain a fine pearlite structure and coarse pearlite structure. Cold rolling was conducted on the sheets by reduction ratios of 20, 30, and 40 % and heat treatment for spheroidization was carried out at $720^{\circ}C$ for the various time intervals from 1 to 32 hrs. Area fraction of spheroidized cementite was measured with an image analyzer as a function of cold reduction ratios and duration times.

  • This paper describes fire performance of eight axially restrained reinforced concrete (RC) columns under a combination of two different load ratios and two different axial restraint ratios. The eight RC columns were all concentrically loaded and subjected to ISO834 standard fire on all sides. Axial restraints were imposed at the top of the columns to simulate the restraining effect of the rest of the whole frame. The axial restraint was effective when the column was expanding as well as contracting. As the results of the experiments have shown, the stiffness of the axial restraint and load level play an important role in the fire behaviors of both HSC and NSC columns. It is found that (a) the maximum deformations during expanding phase were influenced mostly by load ratio and hardly by axial restraint ratio, (b) For a given load ratio, axial restraint ratio had a great impact on the development of axial deformation during contraction phase beyond the initial equilibrium state, (c) increasing the axial restraint increased the value of restraint force generated in both the NSC and HSC columns, and (d) the development of column axial force during the contracting and cooling phase followed nearly parallel trend for columns under the same load ratio.

  • In this work, we present the resonant frequencies, Qrad, and impedance bandwidth of rectangular dielectric resonator antenna(DRA)for a broad range of aspect ratios using Dielectric Waveguide Model. These presented data are compared with simulation and measurement. The DRA having relative permittivities of 37.84 and 90 have been fed by a coaxial cable and fed using a aperture-coupled method for comparisions. The approximate resonant frequencies are shown to have the prediction error of about 8% and impedance bandwidth is found to have large prediction variation according to feeding method. The data presented in this paper can be used when the aspect ratios of DRA have to be determined for a given resonant frequency and impedance bandwidth.

  • Reinforced concrete (RC) columns can be strengthened by direct fastening of steel plates around a column, forming composite actions. This method can increase both the total load bearing area and the concrete confinement stress. To predict the axial load resistance of strengthened RC columns, the equivalent passive confinement stress of the stirrups and the steel jacket should be accurately quantified, which requires the stress in the stirrups and shear force in the connections to be first obtained. In this paper, parameters, i.e., the stress ratio of the stirrups and shear force ratio of steel plate connectors are utilized to quantify the stress of the stirrups and shear force in the connections. A mechanical model for determining the stress ratio of the stirrups and shear force ratio of steel plate connectors is proposed and validated using the experimental results in a previous study. The model is found to be robust. Subsequently, a parametric study is conducted and the optimum stress ratios of the stirrups and the optimum shear force ratios of connectors are proposed for engineering designs.

  • In halobacterial membrane, pharaonis phoborhodopsin (or pharaonis sensory rhdopsin II, psRII) forms a complex with its transducer pHtrII. Flash-photolyis of D75N mutant did not yield M-intermediate but an O-like intermediate is observed. We examined the interaction between D75N of ppR and t-Htr (truncated pHtrII). These formed a complex in the presence of n-dodecyl-$\beta$-D-maltoside, and the association accelerated the decay of the 0 of D75N from 15 to 56 s$\^$-1/. From the decay time constants under varying ratios of D75N and t-Htr, n, the molar ratio of D75N/t-Htr in the complex, and K$\_$D/, the dissociation constant, were estimated. The value of n was unity and K$\_$D/ was estimated to 146 nM. This K$\_$D/ value can be considered as the association between the photo-intermediate and t-Htr, which is deduced by the method of estimation. Previously we (Photochem. Photobiol. 74, 489-494 (2001)) reported K$\_$D/ of 15 $\mu$M for the interaction between the wild-type and t-Htr by means of the change of M-decay rates. Therefore, this value should be the K$\_$D/ value for the interaction between M of the wild-type and t-Htr.

  • This experimental study was conducted to analyze the characteristics of centrifugal pipes which were made of silica fume concrete. External load tests showed that maximum external load ranged from 1,100~5,300kgf/m with thickness ratio(t/D) of between 4.5%~10.0%. Correlation between thickness ratios and external loads was excellent with $R^2$ of 0.99. Respective correlation between measured and computed vertical deformation was good with $R^2$ of higher than 0.90. And therefore, vertical deformation and tensile stress of centrifugal concrete pipes may be theoretically computed with a good precision.

  • The elastic moduli and dissolution rates of 15 glasses with different mole ratios of sodium-magnasium-phosphate as potential non-toxic biomaterials were investigated. In this study, a 3-pint bending test, sonic resonance technique, and theoretical calculation were used to evaluate the modulus of elasticity. The dissolution rates at 37$^{\circ}C$(human body temperature) were determined by the measurement of mass changes in each sample for 24 weeks.
