Output Signal Characteristics according to Input Signal Characteristics of Two Input Ports in 4-port Coupler Circuit (4단자 커플러 회로에서의 두 개 단자의 입력 신호 특성에 따른 출력 신호 특성)

  • The four-port coupler circuit consists of input port, isolation port and two output ports. When it inserts a signal at the input port and the isolation port, the magnitude and phase of the output signal at two output ports are decided by the magnitude and phase of the input signal. This paper analyzes the output signal characteristic of two output ports due to the input signal magnitude and phase of two input ports using the typical 4-port coupler circuit, Branchline hybrid coupler and Ring-hybrid coupler. And, it studies about new way to use branchline hybrid coupler and ring-hybrid coupler on the basis of the this information.

  • Two output ports of $90^{\circ}$ hybrid-coupler are generally the same output power with $90^{\circ}$ phase difference. But, Two output ports of $90^{\circ}$ hybrid-coupler must be the different output slope characteristic about frequency because of the different electrical length. In $90^{\circ}$ hybrid-coupler being the same power distribution, 3-dB power distribution at two output ports only exists near the center frequency. And, the output power difference between two output ports increases in accordance with the further away from the center frequency. This paper proposes $90^{\circ}$ hybrid-coupler being the similar output slope characteristic of two output ports in wideband to modify the ${\lambda}/4$ transmission line of $35-{\Omega}$ characteristic impedance between input port and output port near input port. The power difference between two output ports of the proposed circuit is below 0.2dB over 20% bandwidth of the center frequency in ADS(advanced Design System).

  • This paper introduces a new variable power divider circuit with an arbitrary power division ratio ranging from $1:{\infty}$ to ${\infty}:1$. The proposed power divider circuit consists of one branch-line coupler to be a good input matching characteristic, two variable phase shifters with 90-degree phase variation to be connected two output paths of the branch-line coupler, and one ring-hybrid coupler to combine output signals of two variable phase shifter. The power division ratio between the two output ports of the proposed power divider can be easily controlled by the phase variation of the two phase shifter. The proposed power divider circuit fabricates on laminated RF-35 (h = 20 mil, er=3.5; Taconic) with a center frequency of 2 GHz. The power division ratio of the fabricated prototype varies from about 1:1000 to 5000000:1, with an input reflection characteristic(S11) of below -20 dB, an insertion loss of about -1.0 dB, and an isolation characteristic of below -17 dB between two output ports in the range 1.9-2.1 GHz.

RF Gas Sensor Using 4-Port Hybrid Coupler with Conducting Polymer (전도성 고분자 물질이 결합된 하이브리드 커플러를 적용한 RF 가스 센서)

  • In this paper, a gas sensor using a modified $90^{\circ}$ hybrid coupler structure with conducting polymer which operates at 2.4 GHz is represented. Conducting polymers are used to the gas sensing material in proposed sensors. The conducting polymer varies its electrical property, such as work function and conductivity corresponding to the certain gas. To verify this variation of electrical property of conducting polymer at microwave frequencies, the conducting polymer is incorporated with the $90^{\circ}$ hybrid coupler structure, and this proposed sensor operates as reflection type variable attenuator and variable phase shifter. The conducting polymer is employed as impedence-variable transmission lines that cause a impedance mismatching between the general transmission line and conducting polymer. The experiment was conducted with 100 ppm ethanol gas at temperature of $28^{\circ}C$ and relative humidity of 85 %. As a result, the amplitude deviation of $S_{21}$ is 0.13 dB and the frequency satisfying ${\angle}S_{21}=360^{\circ}$ is shifted about 2.875 MHz.

Design of 5.8GHz Band 4×4 Butler Matrix using Commercial 90° Hybrid Coupler (상용 90도 하이브리드 커플러를 이용한 5.8GHz 대역 4×4 버틀러매트릭스 설계)

  • In this paper, 5.8GHz band $4{\times}4$ Butler matrix is designed using easily accessible commercial $90^{\circ}$ hybrid coupler and semirigid coaxial cable as a transmission line. This Butler matrix is very flexible to changes of antenna system specification like a frequency band because $90^{\circ}$ hybrid coupler changing is all to do. The result of design is the distance of $2{\times}2$ array antenna element is $\sqrt{2}{\lambda}/4$, the 4 beam directions are diagonal of array antenna and phase shifter is not necessary. The beam width is roughly $25^{\circ}$ narrower because of array antenna geometry and the side lobe is about 10dB higher partially than theoretical beam pattern. But the overall beam pattern is similar with theoretical beam. This Butler matrix can be applied to switching beam antenna of 5.8GHz band Wi-Fi and WAVE system.

Design of The Two-Stage Low Noise Amplifier for IMT-2000 Base Stations (IMT-2000 기지국용 저잡음 증폭기 설계)

  • 본 논문에서는 IMT-2000 기지국용 2단 저잡음 증폭기를 설계했다. 잡음지수 특성이 뛰어난 HP사의 PHEMT 소자인 ATF-35143을 사용하였고 능동소자의 바이어스는 $V_{ds}$ 가 3 v $I_{d}$을 30mA로 설정했다. 첫 단은 최소잡음 지수에 중점을 두고 설계했고 둘째 단은 이득에 초점을 맞추어 설계했다. 입출력 정재파 비를 줄이기 위해서 전체증폭기의 앞단과 뒷단에 삽입손실이 0.2dB인 X503 SMT 90도 하이브리드 커플러를 설치 했다. 제작을 위해 기판은 두께 0.76mm이고 비유전율 4.2의 FR-4를 사용했다. 설계된 저잡음 증폭기의 특성은 주파수대역 1.92GHz~1.98GHz에서 잡음지수 0.45dB, 입출력 정재파 비 1.2이하, 이득은 32dB이상의 특성을 보였다.
