  • To evaluate dominant synoptic classes which affect on $PM_{10}$ concentration in Seoul, 64 synoptic classes are classified from four seasons, 850hPa geopotential wind and lower level stability Index. In this study, we used air monitoring and meteorological data in Seoul for five years from 2001 to 2005. The results indicate that the highest occurrence frequency of synoptic class is under a strong westerly geopotential wind and stable lower atmosphere in spring. The highest $PM_{10}$ concentration of synoptic class is associated with a weak geopotential wind speed and high lower level stability. In that class, not only $PM_{10}$ but $SO_2$, $NO_2$ and CO concentrations are also higher than other classes. The analysis of spacial distribution of $PM_{10}$ concentration in each class are indicate that the influence of synoptic class are similar in the Metropolitan area in Korea. But $PM_{10}$ concentration in some areas in Kyoung-Gi are more higher than in Seoul. The relationship between $PM_{10}$ concentration and Meteorological indicator (relative humidity, temperature, surface wind speed) under same synoptic class is more correlative in Winter than other season.

  • Diurnal variations of air quality due to the characteristic features of local weather phenomena over Kunsan, Taegu, and Pohang are analyzed using various synoptic wand fields and the characteristics of local weather during the period of 1990 to 1992. The air pollutants analyzed are sulfur dioxide($SO2_$), nitrogen dioxide($NO_2$), and oxidants ($0_3$). The synoptic wind fields estimated at over the 850 hPa geopotential height are divided in terms of four wand directions and two wand speed categories for each season. The synoptic weather conditions are also classified Into two categories depending on the 850 hPa cloud amounts. The present study shows that the $SO_2$ concentration over Kunsan, and Taegu was maximum at the two or three hours after sunrise and second primary was three or flour hours after sunset. On the other hand, Its concentration over Kunsan was malnmum at 1900 LST or 2000 LST The $O_3$ concentration over the three cities shows Its mapdmum In the afternoon when the solar radiation is strong. The $NO_2$ concentration over Kansan shows in reverse proportion to the $O_3$ concentration over the Kunsan.

  • Diurnal variations of air quality for each season over Taeau city were analyzed using the characteristic features of the various synoptic wind fields. The air quality data which were monitored by four stations are the hourly averaged sulfur dioxide($SO_2$), total suspended particulate(TSP) and oxidants ($O_3$) during the period of 1989 to 1992. The various synoptic wind fields obtained from the 850 hPa geopotential height were divided in to four geostrophic wind directions and two geostrophic wind speeds for each seasons. The synoptic weather conditions were again subdivided info two categories using the lotal cloud amounts, The results shows that diurnal and seasonal variations of the air quality over Taegu city, such as sulfur dioxide, total suspended particulate and oxidants reseal the various characteristics under the same synoptic weather conditions.

  • In case there is a need to run the multi-year urban scale air qulaity model, it is a difficult task due to the computational demand, requiring the statistical approach for the long time atmospheric environmental assessment. In an effort to approach toward long term urban assessment, the sixteen synoptic meteorological conditions are statistically classified from the estimated geostrophic wind speeds and directions of 850 hPa geopotential height field during 2000 ~ 2005. The geostrophic wind directions are subdivided into four even intervals (north, east, south, and west), geostrophic wind speeds into two classes(${\leq}5m/s$ and >5m/s), and daily mean cloud amount into 2 classes(${\leq}5/10$ and >5/10), which result into sixteen classes of the synoptic meteorological cases for each season. The frequency distributions for each 16 synoptic meteorological case are examined and some discussions on how these synoptic classifications can be used in the environmental assessment are presented.

  • The climatological characteristics at the Choejung-san site were statistically analyzed using monthly normals for the various meteorological elements at Taegu meteorological station for 30 years from January 1960 to December 1990. Various synoptic weather conditions were classified by the estimated geostrophic wind speeds and direction determined using the 850 hPa geopotential height field for 10 years from December 1980 to November 1989. Also the analysis of number of clear days were monthly and seasonally performed using the satellite infrared image data which were obtained from GMS 5 for 5 years from December 1990 to November 1995. The results reveal that the meteorological environments of astronomical observation at Choejung-san site were very good conditions during three hours after midnight except for summer season.

  • Data assimilation effect of mobile rawinsonde observation was evaluated using Unified Model (UM) with a Three-Dimensional Variational (3DVAR) data assimilation system during the intensive observation program of 2013 summer season (rainy season: 20 June-7 July 2013, heavy rain period: 8 July-30 July 2013). The analysis was performed by two sets of simulation experiments: (1) ConTroL experiment (CTL) with observation data provided by Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) and (2) Observing System Experiment (OSE) including both KMA and mobile rawinsonde observation data. In the model verification during the rainy season, there were no distinctive differences for 500 hPa geopotential height, 850 hPa air temperature, and 300 hPa wind speed between CTL and OSE simulation due to data limitation (0000 and 1200 UTC only) at stationary rawinsonde stations. In contrast, precipitation verification using the hourly accumulated precipitation data of Automatic Synoptic Observation System (ASOS) showed that Equivalent Threat Score (ETS) of the OSE was improved by about 2% compared with that of the CTL. For cases having a positive effect of the OSE simulation, ETS of the OSE showed a significantly higher improvement (up to 41%) than that of the CTL. This estimation thus suggests that the use of mobile rawinsonde observation data using UM 3DVAR could be reasonable enough to assess the improvement of prediction accuracy.

  • UK Met Office Unified Model (UM) is a grid model applicable for both global and regional model configurations. The Met Office has developed a 4D-Var data assimilation system, which was implemented in the global forecast system on 5 October 2004. In an effort to improve its Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) system, Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) has adopted the UM system since 2008. The aim of this study is to provide the basic information on the effects of satellite data assimilation on UM performance by conducting global satellite data denial experiments. Advanced Tiros Operational Vertical Sounder (ATOVS), Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI), Special Sensor Microwave Imager Sounder (SSMIS) data, Global Positioning System Radio Occultation (GPSRO) data, Air Craft (CRAFT) data, Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) data were assimilated in the UM global system. The contributions of assimilation of each kind of satellite data to improvements in UM performance were evaluated using analysis data of basic variables; geopotential height at 500 hPa, wind speed and temperature at 850 hPa and mean sea level pressure. The statistical verification using Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) showed that most of the satellite data have positive impacts on UM global analysis and forecasts.

  • In this paper, the evaluation of the performance of Korea Meteorological Administratio (KMA) Global Seasonal forecasting system version 6 (GloSea6) is presented by assessing the effects of larger ensemble size and carrying out the test using different initial conditions for hindcast in sub-seasonal to seasonal scales. The number of ensemble members increases from 3 to 7. The Ratio of Predictable Components (RPC) approaches the appropriate signal magnitude with increase of ensemble size. The improvement of annual variability is shown for all basic variables mainly in mid-high latitude. Over the East Asia region, there are enhancements especially in 500 hPa geopotential height and 850 hPa wind fields. It reveals possibility to improve the performance of East Asian monsoon. Also, the reliability tends to become better as the ensemble size increases in summer than winter. To assess the effects of using different initial conditions, the area-mean values of normalized bias and correlation coefficients are compared for each basic variable for hindcast according to the four initial dates. The results have better performance when the initial date closest to the forecasting time is used in summer. On the seasonal scale, it is better to use four initial dates, where the maximum size of the ensemble increases to 672, mainly in winter. As the use of larger ensemble size, therefore, it is most efficient to use two initial dates for 60-days prediction and four initial dates for 6-months prediction, similar to the current Time-Lagged ensemble method.

  • In Jeju, on January 23, 2016, a cold surge accompanied by heavy snowfall with the most significant amount of 12 cm was the highest record in 32 years. During this period, the temperature of 850 hPa in January was the lowest in 2016. Notably, in 2016, the average surface temperature of January on the Polar cap was the highest since 1991, and 500 hPa geopotential height also showed the highest value. With this condition, the polar vortex in the northern hemisphere meandered and expanded into the subtropics regionally, covering the Korean Peninsula with very high potential vorticity up to 7 Potential Vorticity Unit. As a result, the strong cold advection, mostly driven by a northerly wind, around the Korean Peninsula occurred at over 2𝜎. Previous studies have not addressed this extreme synoptic condition linked to polar vortex expansion due to the unprecedented Arctic warming. We suggest that the occurrence of a strong Ural blocking event after the abrupt warming of the Barents/Karas seas is a major cause of unusually strong cold advection. With a specified mesoscale model simulation with SST (Sea Surface Temperature), we also show that the warmer SST condition near the Korean Peninsula contributed to the heavy snowfall event on Jeju Island.

  • This paper investigates the physical and chemical characteristics of long-range transport (LRT) process of air pollutants by employing the MM5-CMAQ and its comparison with local emission dominant (LED) case over northeast Asia. We first classified high air pollution days into LRT and LED cases based on the synoptic meteorological variables of vorticity and geostrophic wind speed/direction at a geopotential level of over 850hPa. LRT cases are further categorized into three types of transport patterns (LRT-I-III) according to the air mass pathways from source regions. LRT-I-III are originated from northern, central, and southern China, respectively, identified by back trajectory analysis. Three LRT-I-III groups have different and unique locations of high pressure and transport pathways. The chemical characteristics showed that the simulated spatial distributions varied in terms of locations of maximum concentrations and the temporal variation of surface concentrations. The primary air pollutants such as $NO_x$, $PM_{10}$ and $SO_2$ of all of three LRT cases are well transported into Korea peninsula with different concentration levels. Of LRT cases, LRT-II has the greatest effect on air quality of Korea peninsula, followed by LRT-I and LRT-III. In comparison with LRT, the LED case shows relatively higher air pollution concentrations in general, but showed a variety of different air quality levels following the emission strength pattern. These widely varying patterns are impling the case dependent multi-directional approach for the development of indicators of long-range transport process over northeast Asia.
