Five new crown ethers containing methyl groups were synthesized. 2,3,4,5: 9,10,11,12-Dibenzo-8,8-dimethyl-15,18,1-trioxacycloeicosane, 2,3,4,5: 9,10,11,12-dibenzo-8,8-dimethyl-15,18,21,1-tetraoxacyclotricosane, 2,3,4,5 : 9,10,11,12-dibenzo-8,8-dimethyl-15,18,21,24,1-pentaoxacyclohexacosane, 2,3,4,5 : 9,10,11,12 : 22,23,24,25 : 29,30,31,32-tetrabenzo-8,8,28,28-tetramethyl-15,18,21,35,38,1-hexaoxacyclotetracontane and 2,3,4,5 : 9,10,11,12 : 25,26,27,28:32,33,34,35-tetrabenzo-8,8,31,31-tetramethyl-15,18,21,24,38,41,44,1-octaoxacyclohexatetracontane were synthesized by reaction of 4,4'-isopropylidenediphenol with di-, tri-and tetraethyleneglycol ditosylate in the presence of MOH(M = Na, K). Di-, tri- and tetraethyleneglycol ditosylate were synthesized by reaction of p-toluenesulfonylchloride with diethyleneglycol, triethyleneglycol and tetraethyleneglycol in the presence of NaOH.

Three kinds of the mashes of 15%, 20% and 25% of boiled wax gourd containing 20% of sugar were fermented by yeast at 5~1$0^{\circ}C$ for 100 days. After fermentation, total sugar content of the 15% mash was 8.0%, 20% mash 8.6%, and 25% mash 8.3%, respectively. Also, it revealed that in reducing sugar content, 15% mash was 7.4%, 20% mash 7.6%, and 25% mash 7.4%, respectively, In protein content, 15% mash was 10.3mg/ml, 20% mash 9.8mg/ml, and 25% mash 11.3mg/ml, and in amino acid content, 15% mash was 0.13 $\mu$mo1/ml, 20% mash 0.03 $\mu$mo1/ml, and 25% mash 0.03 $\mu$mo1/ml, each. In case of pH, 15% mash was 3.88, 20% mash 3.99, and 25% mash 3.97, respectively. In acidity, 15% mash was 0.37, 20% mash 0.44. and 25% mash 0.43, respectively. In the number of yeast cell, 15% mash was 8.33 logCFU/ml, 20% mash 8.56 logCFU/ml, and 25% mash 8.57 logCFU/ml. respectively. In ethanol content, 15% mash was 13.4%, 20% mash 14.9%, and 25% mash 15.5%, respectively. In organic acid content, acetic acid, pyruvic acid, citric acid, and lactic acid were produced, and succinic acid content ranges from 1,407~1,800 mg/l. Five-grade scoring test of sensory evaluation showed that in its taste degree, 15% mash was 3.93, 20% mash 3.66 and 25% mash 3.40, respectively.

Background: 15d-$PGJ_2$ has been known to act as an anti-inflammatory agent and has anti-hypertensive effects. As a result of these properties, we examined the effect of 15d-$PGJ_2$ on the LPS-induced IL-8/CXCL8 mRNA expression in VSMCs from SHR. Methods: Effect and action mechanism of 15d-$PGJ_2$ on the expression of LPS-induced IL-8/CXCL8 mRNA in VSMCs from SHR and WKY were examined by using real-time polymerase chain reaction, electrophoretic mobility shift assay for NF-${\kappa}B$ avtivity, Western blotting analysis for ERK and p38 phosphorylation and flow cytometry for NAD(P)H oxidase activity. Results: 15d-$PGJ_2$ decreased the expression of LPS-induced IL-8/CXCL8 mRNA in WKY VSMCs, but increased the expression of LPS-induced IL-8/CXCL8 mRNA in SHR VSMCs. The upregulatory effect of 15d-$PGJ_2$ in SHR VSMCs was mediated through PPAR${\gamma}$, and dependent on NF-${\kappa}B$ activation and ERK phosphorylation. However, inhibition of the p38 signaling pathway augmented the upregulatory effect of 15d-$PGJ_2$ on LPS-induced IL-8/CXCL8 mRNA. A NAD(P)H oxidase inhibitor inhibited the upregulatory effect of 15d-$PGJ_2$ on LPS-induced IL-8/CXCL8 mRNA expression in SHR VSMCs, and an increase in NAD(P)H oxidase activity was detected in SHR VSMCs treated with 15d-$PGJ_2$/LPS. Conclusion: Our results indicate that the upregulatory effect of 15d-$PGJ_2$ on LPS-induced IL-8/CXCL8 expression in SHR VSMCs is mediated through the PPAR${\gamma}$ and ERK pathway, and may be related to NAD(P)H oxidase activity. However, p38 inactivation may also play an important role in 15d-$PGJ_2$/LPS-induced IL-8/CXCL8 expression in SHR VSMCs.

Seven bacterial strains, 15J4M-1, 15J13-8, 16MFM10, 15J1-8, SR1-5-4, 15J13-6, and 15J8-11 assigned to the phylum Actinobacteria, Bacteroidetes, and Firmicutes were isolated from soil samples collected from Jeju, Korea. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence revealed that strains 15J4M-1, 15J13-8, 16MFM10, 15J1-8, SR1-5-4, 15J13-6, and 15J8-11 were most closely related to Bacillus selenatarsenatis $SF-1^T$ (with 99.4% similarity), Brevibacterium luteolum $CF87^T$ (99.5%), Carnobacterium iners CCUG $62000^T$ (99.6%), Exiguobacterium profundum $10C^T$ (99.3%), Larkinella insperata LMG $22510^T$ (99.3%), Pseudokineococcus lusitanus CECT $7306^T$ (99.4%), and Spirosoma endophyticum $EX36^T$ (99.3%), respectively. This is the first report of these seven species in Korea.

'Yeobong' strawberries were stored at $2^{\circ}C$ under controlled atmosphere (CA) containing the combinations of $O_2{\;}(3.8%)$ and $CO_2{\;}(10,{\;}15,{\;}20%)$ and air as control. Atmospheres of $3%{\;}O_2+15%{\;}CO_2$ and $8%{\;}O_2+15%{\;}CO_2$ reduced respiration and ethylene production rates. Fruits kept under CA conditions of 10% and 15% $CO_2$ were harder than those stored under 20% $CO_2$ and air. The CA conditions of 10% or 15% $CO_2$ maintained approximately 80% of vitamin C for 24 days. Redness were increased and then decreased, but the changing trends were not clear among the storage conditions. Anthocyanin contents in $3%{\;}O_2+15%{\;}CO_2$ and $8%{\;}O_2+15%{\;}CO_2$ were slightly increased for 16 days and then decreased thereafter, while anthocyanin content in air was rapidly increased for 8 days. After 16 days of storage, off-flavor were perceived in all CA storage. And strawberries stored in 20% $CO_2$ conditions were unacceptable after 20 days. The 20% $CO_2$ significantly affected off-flavor of strawberries, but there was no significant difference between 10% $CO_2$ and 15% $CO_2$ conditions. Ethanol which is in relation to off-flavor was higher with elevated $CO_2$ levels. Although CA conditions under $3%{\;}O_2+15%{\;}CO_2$ was effective in delaying the quality changes, there was high ethanol content compared to $8%{\;}O_2+15%{\;}CO_2$ condition. Strawberry kept under $8%{\;}O_2+15%{\;}CO_2$ was maintained the shelf-life for 24 days and the condition prolonged more $4{\sim}8$ days and 12 days than the other CA conditions and air, resectively.

Objectives : This study was conducted to explain the locations of GV24, BL4, GB15, GB13, and ST8 from classic literatures. Methods : 17 classics of acupuncture and moxibustion literature - 『Huangdimingtangjingjixiao』, 『Zhenjiujiayijing』, 『Huangdimingtangjiujing』, 『Beijiqianjinyaofang』, 『Qianjinyifang』, 『Waitaimiyaofang』, 『Ishimpo』, 『Taipingshenghuifang』, 『Tongrenshuxuezhenjiutujing』, 『Zhenjiuzishengjing』, 『Shisijingfahui』, 『Zhenjiujuying』, 『Yixuerumen』, 『Zhenjiudacheng』, 『Leijingtuyi』, 『Chimgukyungheombang』 and 『Yizongjinjian』 - were reviewed and compared. Results : Location of GV24 was on the midpoint of the anterior hairline before Song Dynasty, but changed to 0.5 cun directly above the midpoint of the anterior hairline after Song Dynasty. The locations of BL4, GB13 and ST8 varied among literatures. Conclusions : The locations of GV24, BL4, GB15, GB13 and ST8 were different from the standard acupoint locations, and were not consistent in 17 acupuncture and moxibustion classic literatures.

The egg development and early life history of Sharpbelly Hemiculter leucisculus were investigated. For the experiments, the mature adults were collected at the Lake Yedang in Korea. The eggs from the females were obtained by injecting 10 IU/g of human chorionic gonadotropin and inseminated by wet method in the laboratory. The fertilized eggs were 0.97±0.02 mm (0.9~1.0 mm n=30) in diameter. The embryo began to hatch about 32 hrs after fertilization under water temperature of 22±1℃. The newly-hatched larvae were 3.0±0.2 mm (2.6~3.4 mm, n=15) in total length, and they haven't Melanophore. Six days after hatching, the Preflexion larva were 5.7±0.1 mm (5.4~5.8 mm, n=15) in total length, and they began to eat a Rotifer. 17 days after hatching, the Flexion larva were 6.8±0.2 mm (6.5~7.0 mm, n=15) in total length, and a gas bladder develop above the intestine. 30 days after hatching, the Postflexion larva were 8.8±0.7 mm (7.9~10.3 mm, n=15) in total length, three dorsal fin rays began to develop in the membrane fins. 50 days after hatching, the Juvenile were 20.8±0.8 mm (18.8~24.6 mm, n=15) in total length, and all their fin-rays were formed.

Acrolepiopsis sapporensis Matsumura was reared on welsh onions in the laboratory in Taejon for observation on its bionomics; the adults were provided with 10% sugar solution. At controlled temperatures the stone leek minor female adult laid averages of about 103 at $15^{\circ}C$, 113 at $20^{\circ}C$ and 134 at $25^{\circ}C$. Adult lived for averages of about 10 days at $15^{\circ}C$, 8~9 days at $20^{\circ}C$ and $25^{\circ}C$ and 5 days at $30^{\circ}C$. The egg hatched in about 10~11 days at $15^{\circ}C$, 5~6 days at $20^{\circ}C$ and 5 days at $25^{\circ}C$. The larval stage lasted 25~26 days at $15^{\circ}C$, 11 days at $20^{\circ}C$ and 7~8 days at $25^{\circ}C$. The pupal stage lasted 13 days at $15^{\circ}C$, 9 days at $20^{\circ}C$ and 7~8 days at $25^{\circ}C$.
