The Friction spot dissimilar welding of galvanized steel/Al6061-T6 was performed to investigate the mechanical characteristics of the joints. The presence of thin film of aluminum oxide on the surface and melting of zinc in the coating, made substandard joint characteristics for dissimilar Friction spot joining(FSJ) performed with out removing the coating. Where as, for dissimilar FSJ of galvanized steel/Al6061-T6 after removing the coating, superior agitation and welding quality has been obtained for a configuration of galvanized steel as the upper plate and Al6061-T6 as lower plate. The results from tensile tests and microscopic examination for various combinations of the welding parameters have been presented.
In order to demonstrate the friction stir weldability of the Al 6061 T-6 unequal thickness joint and determine optimum welding parameters, the relations between welding parameters and properties of the joints have been studied in this paper. The experimental results showed that the tensile properties of the joints are affected by the welding heat inputs and tool shape. In this study, the maximum ultimate strength of the as-welded joint is equivalent to 78% and 18hour aged joint is equivalent to 93% that of the base metal. Though the voids-free joints are fractured at the thermally affected zone on the advancing side, the fracture occurs at the weld center when the void defects exist in the joints.

A finite element method (FEM) study was performed on micro-scale blanking of an AL6061-T6 foil with negative clearance. ABAQUS/explicit was used to prepare a simulation model of negative clearance blanking with tools having an edge radius comparable to the foil thickness. The Johnson-Cook plastic flow model was used in the simulations for the material flow. The FEM model was used to study the effects of various blanking parameters on the negative clearance blanking process and quality of the blank. In particular, the projecting edge on the bottom of the blank was observed. Research on negative blanking at the micro-scale is summarized and discussed.

Wear characteristic of the nitrided SKD61 which is a typical mold material using for the extrusion of Al6061 alloy was investigated. The surface of SKD61 was nitrided by salt bath and plasma processes. The thickness of surface nitride layer was about $8.9{\mu}m{\sim}21.3{\mu}m$. Reciprocating friction wear test conducted using pin on disk type indicated the plasma treatment followed salt bath has a lower friction coefficient and a smaller adhesive wear with Al6061 alloy. That was identified by the $Fe_4N$ which has a better wear resistance than FeN mainly formed by plasma nitriding.

We applied an artificial neural network (ANN) and evaluated surface roughness prediction in lateral milling using an endmill. The selected workpiece was AL6061-T4 to obtain data of surface roughness measurement based on the spindle speed, feed, and depth of cut. The Bayesian optimization algorithm was applied to the number of nodes and the learning rate of each hidden layer to optimize the neural network. Experimental results show that the neural network applied to optimize using the Expected Improvement(EI) algorithm showed the best performance. Additionally, the predicted values do not exactly match during the neural network evaluation; however, the predicted tendency does march. Moreover, it is found that the neural network can be used to predict the surface roughness in the milling of aluminum alloy.

In this study, an age-hardened 6061-T6 alloy sheet was used, which is commonly utilized for auto parts. The junction strength characteristics in relation to the stirring speed and welding speed were studied in accordance with the friction stir welding rotation of the tool pin. Micro hardness measurements of A type and B type pins, for a welding speed of 400 mm/min and a tool rotational speed 3000 rpm, were obtained as Hv104 and Hv111, respectively. For a welding speed of 200 mm/min and a tool rotational speed of 2000 rpm, we obtained Hv48 and Hv50 for A and B type pins, respectively. Microstructure observation showed that the stirring portion was fine and uniform, which occurred because of its plastic deformation. In the thermomechanically affected zone, partial recrystallization was present because of the plastic deformation. The crystal grains in the heat affected zone were coarsened due to the heat generated by friction stir welding.

In this study, growth and burning behavior of 6061 aluminum alloy was studied under constant anodic voltages at various temperatures and magnetic stirring rates in 20% sulfuric acid solution by analysing I-t curves, measuring thickness and hardness of aluminum anodic oxide (AAO) films, observations of surface and cross-sectional images of AAO films. AAO films were grown continuously at lower voltages than 18.5V but burning occurred when a voltage more than 19V was applied in 20% H2SO4 solution at 20±0.5℃ and 200 rpm of magnetic stirring. The burning was always related with an extremely large increase of anodic current density with anodizing time, suggesting that high heat generation during anodizing causes deteriorations of AAO films by chemical reaction with acidic solutions. The burning resulted in decreases of film thickness and hardness, surface color brightened and formation of porous defects in the AAO films. The burning voltage was found to decrease with increasing solution temperature and decreasing magnetic stirring rate. The decreased burning voltages seem to be closely related with increased chemical reactions between AAO films and hydrogen ions.
Generally, Al alloys of 5000 and 6000 series show excellent weldability, workability, and specific strength, and are widely used in ship building. A combined experiment via cavitation erosion and corrosion damage involving 6061-T6 Al alloy was performed using potentiodynamic polarization under cavitation erosion (hybrid experiments) with amplitude (cavitation strength). The corrosion current density was approximately 52-fold higher at 30 μm than under static conditions, suggesting that the amplitude greatly affected the damage. The degree of damage increased with increasing cavitation amplitude. After the hybrid experiment, the corrosion rate was compared according to the weight loss and damage depth, and the relationship between the two values was expressed as alpha value. The alpha (α) values at amplitudes of 5 μm, 10 μm and 30 μm were 5.11, 12.81 and 8.74, respectively, suggesting that the α value at 10 μm was greater than at 5 μm, and indicating local corrosion damage. However, the α value at 30 μm was smaller than that of 10 μm, which is attributed to higher damage via uniform corrosion than damage induced by local corrosion.
Interest in electric vehicle is on the rise due to global eco-friendly policies. To improve the efficiency of electric vehicles, it is essential to reduce weights of components. Since electric vehicles have various electronic equipment, the research on stray current corrosion is required. In this research, a galvanostatic corrosion experiment was performed on 6061-T6 Al alloy for electric vehicle battery housing using chloride concentration and applied current density as variables in a solution simulating an acid rain environment. As a result of the experiment, when chloride concentration and applied current density were increased, corrosion damage became larger. In particular, pitting damage was dominant at an applied current density of 0.1 mA/cm2. Pitting damage over the entire surface was found at a current density of 1.0 mA/cm2. In conclusion, chloride concentration had a relatively large effect on localized corrosion. The applied current density had a great effect on uniform corrosion. However, in the case of applied current density, localized corrosion was also greatly affected by interaction with chloride.
This study investigated the formation of oxide films on 6061 aluminum (Al) alloy and their impacts on corrosion resistance efficiency by regulating anodization voltage. Despite advantageous properties inherent to Al alloys, their susceptibility to corrosion remains a significant limitation. Thus, enhancing corrosion resistance through developing protective oxide films on alloy surfaces is paramount. The first anodization was performed for 6 h with an applied voltage of 30, 50, or 70 V on the 6061 Al alloy. The second anodization was performed for 0.5 h by applying 40 V after removing the existing oxide film. Resulting oxide film's shape and roughness were analyzed using field emission-scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Wettability and corrosion resistance were compared before and after a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) using an FDTS (1H, 1H, 2H, 2H-Perfluorodecyltrichlorosilane) solution. As the first anodization voltage increased, the final oxide film's thickness and pore diameter also increased, resulting in higher surface roughness. Consequently, all samples exhibited superhydrophilic behavior before coating. However, contact angle after coating increased as the first anodization voltage increased. Notably, the sample anodized at 70 V with superhydrophobic characteristics after coating demonstrated the highest corrosion resistance performance.
