The object of this study is to experimentally investigate the structural behavior of circular tube column bases under axial loads and to ascertain the test results using elastic numerical analysis. A literature survey was conducted on the AISC design code and a few design formulae. Tests were axially conducted under compressive loads. The thickness of the base plate was the main parameter of the specimens. Nine base plate specimens were used, with thicknesses ranging from 9 millimeters to 35 millimeters. The relationship of the load and the vertical displacement of base plates and the relationship of the load and the strain of the base plates were tested. Ansys version 6.1 was used for the elastic numerical analysis, to ascertain the test results. he test results and the elastic numerical analysis results will be used to suggest design formulae for inelastic numerical analyses that will be conducted later on.
Microcracks can rapidly grow and develop in high-strength steels used in offshore structures. It is important to render these microcracks harmless to ensure the safety and reliability of offshore structures. Here, the dependence of the aspect ratio (As) of the maximum depth of harmless crack (ahlm) was evaluated under three different conditions considering the threshold stress intensity factor (Δkth) and residual stress of offshore structural steel F690. The threshold stress intensity factor and fatigue limit of fatigue crack propagation, dependent on crack dimensions, were evaluated using Ando's equation, which considers the plastic behavior of fatigue and the stress ratio. ahlm by peening was analyzed using the relationship between Δkth obtained by Ando's equation and Δkth obtained by the sum of applied stress and residual stress. The plate specimen had a width 2W = 12 mm and thickness t = 20 mm, and four value of As were considered: 1.0, 0.6, 0.3, and 0.1. The ahlm was larger as the compressive residual stress distribution increased. Additionally, an increase in the values of As and Δkth(l) led to a larger ahlm. With a safety factor (N) of 2.0, the long-term safety and reliability of structures constructed using F690 can be secured with needle peening. It is necessary to apply a more sensitive non-destructive inspection technique as a non-destructive inspection method for crack detection could not be used to observe fatigue cracks that reduced the fatigue limit of smooth specimens by 50% in the three types of residual stresses considered. The usefulness of non-destructive inspection and non-damaging techniques was reviewed based on the relationship between ahlm, aNDI (minimum crack depth detectable in non-destructive inspection), acr N (crack depth that reduces the fatigue limit to 1/N), and As.

In this research, the seismic connection details for two concrete-filled U-shape steel beam-to-H columns were proposed and cyclically tested under a full-scale cruciform configuration. The key connecting components included the U-shape steel section (450 and 550 mm deep for specimens A and B, respectively), a concrete floor slab with a ribbed deck (165 mm deep for both specimens), welded couplers and rebars for negative moment transfer, and shear studs for full composite action and strengthening plates. Considering the unique constructional nature of the proposed connection, the critical limit states, such as the weld fracture, anchorage failure of the welded coupler, local buckling, concrete crushing, and rebar buckling, were carefully addressed in the specimen design. The test results showed that the connection details and design methods proposed in this study can well control the critical limit states mentioned above. Especially, the proposed connection according to the strengthening strategy successfully pushed the plastic hinge to the tip of the strengthened zone, as intended in the design, and was very effective in protecting the more vulnerable beam-to-column welded joint. The maximum story drift capacities of 6.0 and 6.8% radians were achieved in specimens A and B, respectively, thus far exceeding the minimumlimit of 4% radians required of special moment frames. Low-cycle fatigue fracture across the beam bottom flange at a 6% drift level was the final failure mode of specimen A. Specimen B failed through the fracture of the top splice plate of the bolted splice at a very high drift ratio of 8.0% radian.

The push-out tests have been conducted on the specimens which consist of the steel beam with U-shape section and the cap-type shear connectors with constant intervals. Existing equations for the evaluation of shear connector strength have been investigated on the basis of test results. The reinforcing bars for longitudinal reinforcement and the penetrative bars for transverse reinforcement didn't have much effect on the shear capacity of the cap-type shear connector. The larger the width of cap-type shear connector was profiled, the greater the shear strength turned. The shear capacities of cap-type shear connectors with constant intervals were evaluated on the basis of push-out test results, and those were possible to be determined with proper safety margin using the Eurocode 4. The slip capacity of cap-type shear connector was shown to exceed the limit value of 6mm for sufficiently ductile behavior.

Various monitoring sensors are used to predict and detect structural damage. Smart sensors, such as glass-fiber sensors, PZT, and MEMS, among others, have replaced traditional sensors. They are now being used in many areas. This study aims to predict the damage by measuring the PZT voltage attached on the specimen by the applied impact load. In the experiment to detect damages in beam connection, simple $H-400{\times}200{\times}8{\times}13$ beams were spliced with bolts. The results of FFT between PZT sensor and accelrometer were compared to measure the sensitivity of the PZT sensor. The damage to the beam was presumed by loosening the bolt, and then the damage measurement was accompanied. Secondly, a steel $PL600{\times}65{\times}5.8$ plate beam was fabricated for the purpose of experimenting on damage measurement. Impact loading test on three different locations was carried out. Damage width varied between 6~42mm on both sides by cutting, using a steel saw. The ratio of frequencies before and after the damage was computed to quantify the damage level by using FFT, and the change in mode pattern with the increased damage was investigated to measure the damage.

Industrialization and modernization of the beginning of the IT industry is growing very fast. Since telecommunications industry was developed rapidly, technologies about miniaturization and high-precision of parts have been actively developed to lead information revolution. generally, the entire shear surface of the product applying fine blanking technology must be very precise. Fine blanking is used to save cost by avoiding post-processing of the product. When using press blanking, it spends a lot of money on the production by using many post-processing. Fine blanking typically used in 0.5~18 mm thick steel plate. Because a lot of post-processing cost can be used to process, except for fine blanking. In order to develop components "CHANCE CONTENTS" in the fine blanking process, the purpose of this study is to minimize the edge of the bridge, secured 95% of the material thickness of the shear surface using the 1.6 mm thickness of the material SPCC. Blanking process by introducing after changing thickness through forging process, due to change in vee-rring force and counter force, the experimental amount of depressions and flatness and the shear surface were analyzed.

In this study, Charpy impact test and numerical studies were performed to examine the effects of failure behavior and energy absorption on the notch position. For this purpose, carbon steel plate(SA-516 Gr. 70) with thickness of 25mm usually used for pressure vessel was welded by SMAW(Shielded Metal-Arc Welding)method and specimens were fabricated from the welded plate. The Charpy impact tests were then performed with specimens having different notch positions varying within HAZ. A series of three-dimensional FE analysis which simulates the Charpy test and crack propagation are carried out as well. We divided HAZ into two, three and four regions to apply mechanical properties of HAZ to FE-analys. Results reveal that the absorbed energies during impact test depend significantly on the notch position. To obtain the results of reliability, HAZ should be divided into at least three regions.
Electron beam (EB) and Gas tungsten arc (TIG) welds were performed on 12.7 mm thick Ti-6Al-4V plate (ASTM Titanium Grade 5). Charpy-V toughness and hardness, as well as, microstructure of the welds and penetration from the macrostructure were studied. It appears that by EB welding rather smaller $\beta$-grains than with TIG welding can be obtained. Next to the fusion line the $\beta$-grain size in the HAZ was 50 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$l while in the weld metal it was 150 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. Charpy-V toughness of the EB weld metal was equal or even better to that of base metal, which shows that the $\alpha$-martensite per se is not particularly brittle if only the grain size is fine enough. This is similar to behavior of low carbon martensite in steel. The grain size was studied with light optical and scanning electron (SEM) microscopes. Thus for products, for products which can be manufactured automatically with very narrow fit, the EB welding of Ti-6Al-4V appears to yield satisfactory toughness without any complex post weld heat treatment. ill this study as in earlier studies the TIG welds gave lower toughness than that of the base material due to the higher heat input and slower cooling as compared to EB welding.
This study presents free vibration analyses of perforates steel plates with various cutouts. Four different parameters (shape, size, curvature radius ratio, and rotation of cutouts) were considered to investigate the effects of those parameters on the free vibration characteristics, such as natural frequencies of the perforated steel plates. Three different shapes of cutouts are circle, square, and triangle, and the considered sizes are 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 mm. For the triangular and square cutouts, the characteristic radii of the inscribed circles of those cutouts were defined. In addition, the curvature radius ratio was defined as the ratio of curvature radius of bluntness and the characteristic radius. Then, total seven different curvature radius ratios (0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, 0.9, and 1) were considered. To investigate the rotation effect of the cutouts, it was considered four rotations ($0^{\circ}$, $15^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}$, and $45^{\circ}$) for the square cutouts and three rotations (0, 15, and 30) for the triangular cutouts. All the free vibration analyses were conducted using a general purpose finite element program. From the analyses we found that the most influential parameter for the free vibration response of the perforated plates is the size of cutout. The other factors such as the shape, curvature radius ratio, and rotation are minors; they mainly change the natural frequency as long as the size effect is accompanied.

An FFD(flexible fine die) is an embossed mold that consists of a thin plate ranging from 0.6 to 3 mm in thickness. FFDs are primarily used for cutting LCD films and F-PCB sheets. In the high-speed micro-milling process of flexible fine dies, the lubrication and cooling of the cutting edges is very important from the aspect of eco machining and cutting performance. In this paper, a comparative study of tool wear and surface roughness between cutting fluid and hybrid lubrication for eco-machining of FFD was conducted for processes of high-speed machining of highly hardened material (STC5, HRC52). Especially, the incorporated fluid method for eco machining, in which the cutting performances can be simultaneously measured, was introduced. The machining results show that hybrid lubrication, instead of conventional cutting fluid, leads to excellent tool wear and surface roughness and represents the proper conditions for eco micro-machining of flexible fine dies.
