  • The 'Stable Isotope Analysis in R' (SIAR), one of the Bayesian mixing models for stable isotopes, has been proven to be useful for source apportionment of nitrates in rivers. In this study, the contribution ratios of nitrate sources were quantified by using the SIAR based on nitrogen and oxygen stable isotope measurements in the Yeongsan River. From the measurements, it was found that the values of δ15N-NO3 and δ18O-NO3 ranged from -8.2 ‰ to +13.4 ‰ and from +2.2 ‰ to +9.8 ‰, respectively. We further analyzed the contribution ratios of the five nitrate sources by using the SIAR. From the modeling results, the main nitrate source was found to be soil N (29.3 %), followed by sewage (26.7 %), manure (19.6 %), chemical fertilizer (17.9 %) and precipitation (6.3 %). From the results, it was found that the anthropogenic sources, i.e., sewage, manure and chemical fertilizer contribute 64.2% of the total nitrate inflow from the watershed. Due to the significant correlation of δ15N-NO3 and lnNO3- in this study, the fractionation factors reflecting the biogeochemical processes of stable isotope ratios could be directly obtained. This may make the contribution ratios obtained in this study more precise. The fractionation factors were identified as +3.64 ± 0.91 ‰ for δ15N-NO3 (p<0.01) and -5.67 ± 1.73 ‰ for δ18O-NO3(p<0.01), respectively, and were applied in using the SIAR. The study showed that the stable isotope method using the SIAR could be applied to quantitatively calculate the contribution ratios of nitrate sources in the Yeongsan River.

  • Thermal degradation of styrene dimer fraction (SDF, main compound: 47 wt% of 1,3-diphenylpropane), 5~15% of total products produced during decomposition of waste expanded polystyrene (WEPS) was investigated. Reaction condition of $360^{\circ}C$, and 152 kPa to 202 kPa was an optimum for high pressure degradation. Under this operating condition, the yield of oil was 73.8% and the selectivities to Ben, Tol, EB, SM, and AMS were 0.4, 30.9, 15.0, 19.6, and 4.2%, respectively. Non-catalytic fixed bed continuous degradation was conducted at reaction temperatures of $510{\sim}610^{\circ}C$ and contact time ranges of 2~24 min, where the yield was increased by increasing of reaction temperature and contact time. A $Cr_2O_3$ catalyst showed the highest activity and SM yield among acid, base, and redox catalysts. The conversion of 74.6% and the yield of Ben, Tol, EB, SM, and AMS were 0.4, 21.6, 9.7, 17.9, and 3.5%, respectively at $560^{\circ}C$ and contact time of 24 min. It is thought that styrene is converted to EB and other secondary products throughout the formation of diradicals of styrene.

  • Pyrolysis characteristics of waste plastic films were investigated by using a thermogravimetric analysis and pyrolyzer-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. Thermogravimetric analysis results revealed that the pyrolysis of waste plastic films can be divided into two distinct reactions; (1) the decomposition reaction of starch at between 200 and $370^{\circ}C$ and (2) that of other plastic polymers such as PS, PP, PE at between 370 and $510^{\circ}C$. The kinetic analysis results obtained by using the revised Ozawa method indicated that the apparent activation energy of the pyrolysis reaction of waste plastic films was also changed dramatically according to the different decomposition reactions of two major waste plastic film components. Py-GC/MS results also revealed that the typical pyrolyzates of each polymer in waste plastic films were levoglucosan (starch), terephthalic acid (PET), styrene monomer, dimer, and trimer (PS), methylated alkenes (PP), and triplet peaks (PE) composed of alkadiene/alkene/alkane. The phthalate, used as a polymer additive, was also detected on the pyrogram of waste plastic films mixture.

  • This survey was carried out to estimate pesticide residue levels in commercial agricultural products in the year 2009. Residues were examined in 16 commodities (rice, foxtail millet, buckwheat, kidney beans, peanuts, sesame, oranges, grapefruit, kiwifruit, spinach, perilla leaves, leeks, garlic stem, garlic, ginger, and oak mushroom) collected from 22 provinces in Korea. Analyses were performed by multi-methods capable of detecting up to 60 pesticides by LC/MS/MS. A total of 510 samples were collected and analyzed. Of the samples, 96.1% contained no detectable pesticide residues. Detectable residues at or below the MRLs were found in 3.5% of the samples. However, in 0.4% of the samples (spinach and leeks), residue (ethaboxam and fluquinconazole) levels exceeded the MRLs. Furthermore, intake assessments of 7 kinds of pesticide residues were carried out, excluding those exceeding the MRLs. The results showed that the ratios of EDI (estimated daily intake) to ADI (acceptable daily intake) were 0.0001-0.0006%, which indicates that the detected pesticide residues were in a safe range. It is concluded that residual pesticides in agricultural products are properly controlled in Korea.

  • In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in research on gluten-free bread. Most studies have focused on substituting or imitating the gluten network. However, less attention has been paid to technological approaches to improve the quality of gluten-free rice bread (GFRB). This study analyzed the influence of the temperature of water used for kneading and fermentation time on the quality of GFRB. Water at various amounts and different temperatures was added for kneading, and fermentation was performed for 0, 2, and 4 h. GFRB produced by kneading using water at 95℃ showed the highest specific volume and the lowest hardness among test groups, regardless of other factors. In conclusion, mixing equal volumes of water at 95℃ and rice flour, followed by a 2 h fermentation process, produced the best-quality GFRB in terms of cross-sectional area, hardness, and appearance.

  • Background This paper discusses the treatment protocol for patients with frostbite. Methods We performed a retrospective analysis of a series of 17 patients with second- and higher-degree frostbite who had been treated at our medical institution between 2010 and 2012. Results Our clinical series of patients (n=17) included 13 men and four women, whose mean age was $42.4{\pm}11.6$ years (range, 22-67 years). The sites of injury include the foot in six patients (35.3%), the hand in six patients (35.3%) and the facial region in five patients (29.4%). Seven patients with second-degree frostbite were completely cured with only conservative treatment during a mean period of $12.7{\pm}3.3$ days (range, 8-16 days). Of the five patients with third-degree frostbite, two underwent skin grafting following debridement, and the remaining three achieved a complete cure with conservative treatment during a mean period of $35{\pm}4.3$ days (range, 29-39 days). Five patients with fourth-degree frostbite were treated with surgical procedures including amputation. Conclusions With the appropriate conservative management in the early stage of onset, surgeons should decide on surgery after waiting for a sufficient period of time until the demarcation of the wound. Continuous management of patients is also needed to achieve functional recovery after a complete cure has been achieved. This should also be accompanied by patient education for the avoidance of re-exposure to cold environments.

  • Hazard risk of explosion on pharmaceutical raw materials dust in pharmaceutical industry often exists when it is handled or processed in the industrial sites, and explosion accident is caused by this. In this study, the dust explosion characteristics of the three pharmaceutical raw materials samples were measured. The main explosion characteristics are as follows: $P_{max}$, MIE and MIT of loxoprofen acid having $5.31^{\circ}C$ of median diameter are obtained 8.4 bar, 1 mJ < MIE < 3 mJ and $550^{\circ}C$. $P_{max}$, MIE and MIT of camphorsulfonate having $95.63^{\circ}C$ of median diameter are obtained 7.9 bar, 30 mJ < MIE < 100 mJ and $510^{\circ}C$. $P_{max}$, MIE and MIT of rifampicine having $26.48^{\circ}C$ of median diameter are obtained 7.9 bar and 1 mJ < MIE < 3 mJ and $470^{\circ}C$. The deflagration index ($K_{st}$) and the explosion index (EI) were obtained by using these data. The explosion hazard assessment of pharmaceutical raw materials dust was compared and examined. As a result, the explosion hazard assessment according to deflagration index and explosion index were the explosion class with St 2 and the explosion hazard rating of severe for loxoprofen acid & rifampicine and St 1 and strong for clopidogrel camphorsulfonate, respectively.

  • Recent developments and improvements of multiple technological elements including mass spectrometry (MS) instrument, multi-dimensional chromatographic separation, and software tools processing MS data resulted in benefits of large scale proteomics analysis. However, its throughput is limited by the speed and reproducibility of the protein digestion process. In this study, we demonstrated a new method for rapid proteolytic digestion of proteins using acoustic technology. Tryptic digests of BSA prepared at various conditions by super acoustic for optimization time and intensity were analyzed by LC-MS/MS showed higher sequence coverage in compared with traditional 16 hrs digestion method. The method was applied successfully for complex proteins of a breast cancer cells at 30 min of digestion at intensity 2. This new application reduces time-consuming of sample preparation with better efficiency, even with large amount of proteins, and increases high-throughput process in sample preparation state.
