In this study, the effects of oxide layer farmed on the wear tracks of TiN coated silicon wafer on friction and wear characteristics were investigated. Silicon wafer was used for the substrate of coated disk specimens, which were prepared by depositing TiN coating with 1 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in coating thickness. AISI 52100 steel ball was used fur the counterpart. The tests were performed both in air for forming oxide layer on the wear track and in nitrogen to avoid oxidation. This paper reports characterization of the oxide layer effects on friction and wear characteristics using X-ray diffraction(XRD), Auger electron spectroscopy(AES), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and multi-mode atomic force microscope(AFM).

The friction behaviour of Si-wafer, diamond-like carbon (DLC) and two self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) namely dimethyldichlorosilane (DMDC) and diphenyl-dichlorosilane (DPDC) coated on Si-wafer was studied under loading conditions in milli-newton (mN) range. Experiments were performed using a ball-on-flat type reciprocating micro-tribo tester. Glass balls with various radii 0.25 mm, 0.5 mm and 1 mm were used. The applied normal load was in the range of 1.5 mN to 4.8 mN. Results showed that the friction increased with the applied normal load in the case of all the test materials. It was also observed that friction was affected by the ball size. Friction increased with the increase in the ball size in the case of Si-wafer. The SAMs also showed a similar trend, but had lower values of friction than those of Si-wafer In-terestingly, for DLC it was observed that friction decreased with the increase in the ball size. This distinct difference in the behavior of friction in DLC was attributed to the difference in the operating mechanism. It was observed that Si-wafer and DLC exhibited wear, whereas wear was absent in the SAMs. Observations showed that solid-solid adhesion was dominant in Si-wafer, while plowing in DLC. The wear in these two materials significantly Influenced their friction. In the case of SAMs their friction behaviour was largely influenced by the nature of their molecular chains.
The friction-reducing properties of lubricants containing ionic liquids based on ammonium dithiocarbamate are studied. The ionic liquids are produced through the following two steps: the synthesis of sodium alkyl dithiocarbamates via the substitution reaction of dialkylamine and carbon disulfide and their subsequent conversion into ammonium dithiocarbamate-based ionic liquids through an ion-exchange reaction with a quaternary alkyl ammonium halide salt. The structures of the ionic liquids are characterized by NMR spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The isolated yields of the ionic liquids, which are viscous and pale yellow, are approximately 92%. The Brookfield viscosities and pour points of the ionic liquids are determined. Further, their wear resistances are measured through the four-ball wear test and the Schwingung Reibung Ver-schleiss (oscillation, friction, wear) test. The wear scar diameter of the lubricants containing 1 wt of the quaternary alkyl ammonium dithiocarbamate-based ionic liquids (0.475-0.631 mm) is significantly lower than that of the base oil (0.825 mm), proving that the ammonium dithiocarbamate-based ionic liquids have good friction-reducing characteristics. However, these friction-reducing characteristics fade significantly after long-term storage, owing to the degradation of the ionic liquids.
The rolling fatigue lives (RFL) of five kinds of silicon nitride balls were investigated. Four kinds of Si$_3$N$_4$balls were fabricated using different raw materials, sintering aids and sintering conditions. Commercially available Si$_3$N$_4$ball was also studied for comparison. All the balls were finished up to the dimensional accuracy of Grade 10 defined in KS B 2001 (Steel Balls fer Ball Bearings) with a size of 9.525 mm. RFL tests were then conducted under the initial theoretical maximum contact stress 6.38 GPa and the spindle speed 10,000 rpm. Gear oil was provided by oiled race as lubricant. The results of RFL test indicated the prerequisitic conditions for the long rolling life of Si$_3$N$_4$ball : (1) the high density, (2) microstructures consisted of small uniformly distributed grains, (3) little glassy phase in grainboundary, and (4) little crystalline phase and secondary phase that induces residual thermal stress due to the differences of thermal expansion coefficient with Si$_3$N$_4$phase.
Dry sliding wear behavior of ultra-fine grained(UFG) plain low carbon dual phase steel, of which microstructure consists of hard martensite in a ductile ferrite matrix, has been investigated. The wear characteristics of the UFG dual phase steel was compared with that of a coarse grained dual phase steel under various applied load conditions. Dry sliding wear test were carried out using a pin-on-disk type tester at various loads of 1N to 100N under a constant sliding speed condition of 0.20m/s against an AISI 52100 bearing steel ball at room temperature. The sliding distance was fixed as 1000m for all wear tests. The wear rate was calculated by dividing the weight loss, measured to the accuracy of 10-5g by the specific gravity and sliding distance. The worn surfaces and wear debris were analyzed by SEM, EDS and profilometer. Micro-vickers hardness of the cross section of worn surfaces were conducted to analyze strain hardening underneath the contact surfaces. The wear mechanism of the UFG dual phase steel was investigated with emphasis on the unstable nature of the grain boundaries of the UFG microstructure.
A sliding friction and wear test for silicon nitride (Si,N4) was conducted using a ball-on-disk specimen configuration. The material used in this study was HIPed silicon nitride. The tests were carried out from room temperature to 1000$^{\circ}C$ using self-mated silicon nitride couples in laboratory air. The worn surfaces were observed by SEM and the debris particles from the worn surfaces were analyzed for oxidation by XPS. The normal load was found to have a more significant influence on the friction coefficient of the silicon nitride than an elevated temperature. The specific wear rate was found to decrease along with the sliding distance. The specific wear rate at 29.4 N and 1000$^{\circ}C$ was 292 times larger than that at room temperature. The main wear mechanism from room temperature to 750$^{\circ}C$ was caused by brittle fracture whereas from 750$^{\circ}C$ to 1000$^{\circ}C$ the wear mechanism was mainly influenced by the oxidation of silicon nitride due to the increased temperature. The oxidation of silicon nitride at a high temperature was a significant factor in the wear increase.
Titanium is widely used in dentistry for its low density, high strength, fatigue resistance, corrosion resistance, and biocompatibility. But it has a tendency of surface damage under circumstance of friction and impact for its low hardness of the surface. Coating is one of methods fir increasing surface hardness. Its effect is to improve surface physical characteristics without change of titanium. Diamond-like carbon and titanium nitride are known for its high hardness of the surface. So that this study was aimed at the wear test and the cytotoxicity test of the commercially pure titanium and Ti-6Al-4V alloy which were deposited by diamond-like carbon film or titanium nitride film to acertain improvement of the surface hardness and the biocompatibility. A disk (25mm diameter, 2mm thickness) was made of commercially pure titanium and Ti-6Al-4V alloy and these substrates were deposited by diamond-like carbon film or titanium nitride film. Diamond-like carbon film was deposited by the method of radiofrequency plasma assisted chemical vapor deposition and titanium nitride film was deposited by the method of reactive arc ion plating. Then these substrates were tested about wear characteristics by the pin-on-disk type wear tester in which ruby ball was used as a wear causer under the load of 32N, The fracture cycles were measured by rotating the substrates until their films were fractured. The wear volume was measured after 150 cycles and 3,000 cycles using surface profiler. The cytotoxicity test was peformed by the method of the MTT assay. The results were as follows : 1. In the results of the wear volume test, commercially pure titanium and titanium alloy which were coated by diamond-like carbon film or titanium nitride aim had higher resistance against wear than the substrates which were not coated by any films (P<0.05). 2. In the results of the fracture cycle test and the wear volume test, diamond-like carbon film had higher resistance against wear than titanium nitride film (P<0.05). 3. In both coatings of diamond-like carbon aim and titanium nitride film, Ti-6Al-4V alloy had higher resistance against wear than commercially pure titanium (P<0.05) 4. In the results of the cytotoxicity test, diamond-like carbon film and titanium nitride film had little cytotoxicity as like commercially pure titanium or Ti-6Al-4V alloy (P>0.05).
Dry sliding wear behavior of electro-pressure sintered Fe-Ni and Co-Fe-Ni compacts was investigated. Pin-on-disk wear tests were performed on the sintered Fe-Ni, Co-Fe-Ni disk specimens against alumina $(Al_2O_3)$ and silica $(SiO_2)$ ball counterparts at various loads ranging from 3N to 12N. A constant sliding speed of 0.1m/sec was employed. Wear rate was calculated by dividing the weight loss measured after the test by specific gravity and sliding distance. Worn surfaces and cross sections of them were examined by a scanning electron microscopy, and wear mechanism of the compacts was investigated. Wear characteristics of the compacts were discussed as a function of composition of the compacts. Relationship between the wear rate and mechancial properties of the compact was explored, and effects of the oxide layer that was formed on wearing surface of the compacts on the wear were also studied.

Stable metallic Cu/Zn nanoparticles were prepared in the base oil phase by hydrothermal method. The physical properties, such as crystal structure, crystallite size and crystallinity according to synthesis conditions have been investigated by XRD, FT-IR and TEM. In addition, 4-ball test has been performed in order to investigate the frictional wear properties of prepared nanosized Cu/Zn particles. The peaks of the X-ray diffraction pattern indicate that the particle size was very small and crystallinity of Cu/Zn particles was good. The micrographs of TEM showed that nanosized Cu/Zn particles possessed a spherical morphology with a narrow size distribution. The crystallite size of the Cu/Zn particles synthesized in base oils was 23-30 nm. It was found that the antiwear capacity increases with increasing Cu/Zn concentration. When the concentration of Cu/Zn was 5.0 wt%, the wear scar diameters was 0.38 mm.

Diamond-like carbon(DLC) films are considerable research interest because of their widespread applications as protective coatings in areas such as optical windows, magnetic storage disks, car parts, biomedical coatings and as micro-electromechanical devices(MEMs). DLC films were deposited on WC-Co by PECVD using Ar, $C_2H_4$ gas. Tribological tests were conducted using a ball-on-disk type tribometer in dry air. Three kinds of counter-bodies balls were used. The counter-bodies balls are SM45C, SUJ2 and $ZrO_2$(3.17mm in diameter). Wear rate of the samples were calculated after measuring the worn-out volume of the wear track. As results wear test, the higher hardness of counter-bodies, friction coefficient low. As result of XPS estimation, wear debris generated as an oxide lower the friction coefficient.
