  • This paper deals with direct torque control of an induction motor (IM) with constant switching frequency. The desired torque is obtained from the speed controller which is designed using the IP controller. Decoupling control of torque and flux is developed based on the energy model of IM using the IP controller strategies. The desired d-axis and q-axis stator voltage components are obtained from the designed controller, which decouples torque and flux. The constant switching frequency can be applied using space-vector pulse width modulation, since the desired stator voltage can be known from the decoupling torque and flux controllers. In order to achieve stable operation of the proposed IP controllers, the gains of the controllers are chosen by setting the poles in negative (left) half of s-plane and by choosing the rising time for the response of the step function. The proposed controller was verified in simulations using Matlab/Simulink and results have proven excellent performance. It was found that the proposed IP controllers can provide excellent performance to track the desired torque and speed and to reject the disturbance of load.

  • For the problem that the complexity of 3-D modeling and multi parameter optimization, as well as the uncertainty of the winding factor of axial flux permanent magnet generator with coreless windings. The complex 3-D model was simplified into 2-D analytic model, and an analytical formula for the winding factor that adapting different coreless stator winding is proposed in this paper. The analytical solution for air-gap magnetic fields, no-load back EMF, electromagnetic torque, and efficiency are calculated by using this method. The multiple objective and multivariable optimization of the maximum fundamental and the minimum harmonic content of back EMF are performed by using response surface methodology. The proposed optimum design method was applied to make a generator. The generator was tested and the calculated results are compared with the proposed method, which show good agreements.

  • This paper reports briefly on the computational results of a turbulent Rayleigh-Benard convection with the elliptic-blending second-moment closure (EBM). The primary emphasis of the study is placed on an investigation of accuracy and numerical stability of the elliptic-blending second-moment closure for the turbulent Rayleigh-Benard convection. The turbulent heat fluxes in this study are treated by the algebraic flux model with the temperature variance and molecular dissipation rate of turbulent heat flux. The model is applied to the prediction of the turbulent Rayleigh-Benard convection for Rayleigh numbers ranging from $Ra=2{\times}10^6$ to $Ra=10^9$, and the computed results are compared with the previous experimental correlations, T-RANS and LES results. The predicted cell-averaged Nusselt number follows the correlation by Peng et al.(2006) ($Nu=0.162Ra^{0.286}$) in the 'soft' convective turbulence region ($2{\times}10^6{\leq}Ra{\leq}4{\times}10^7$) and it follows the experimental correlation by Niemela et al. (2000) ($Nu=0.124Ra^{0.309}$) in the 'hard' convective tubulence region ($10^8{\leq}Ra{\leq}10^9$) within 5% accuracy. This results show that the elliptic-blending second-moment closure with an algebraic flux model predicts very accurately the Rayleigh Benard convection.

  • The operating parameters influencing on limiting flux was investigated in the ultrafiltration of PVA, and a new model, which is based on the Amiar model using the concept of heat transfer coefficient, was devised to overcome the limitation of gel-layer model. Using polysulfone plate-unit membrane (MWCO=20,000) and hollow-fiber membrane (MWCO= 30,000), ultrafiltration characteristics of PVA was examined with the variation of operating parameters such as cross flow velocity, transmembrane pressure, temperature, and PVA concentration. According to experimental results, the ultrafiltration of PVA through polysulfone membrane is mainly controlled by well-known phenomena of concentration polarization caused by gel-layer formation. On the contrary, in hollow fiber membrane was observed upward limiting flux which can not be explained by gel-layer model. New model was applied to predict the upward limiting flux behavior with partial satisfaction. The application of new model including viscosity correction factor, however, revealed that PVA ultrafiltration is closely related to the viscosity of permeating fluid.

  • Turbulent fluxes of heat, water vapor, and CO2 have been measured since August, 2003 at Dasan Station (78o 55’ N, 11o50’E) in the Arctic. These data can allow us to better understand the interactions between the Polar ecosystems and the atmosphere together with those at King Sejong Station in the Antarctic. Due to the buildings and measurement platforms around the flux tower, it is required to evaluate how they influence measured flux data. By using one-year turbulence statistics data and footprint model, flux footprint climatology was analyzed together with data availability. The upwind distance of source area ranged from 150 to 300 m, where the buildings and measurement platforms existed. However, flow distortion due to them may be not a major factor to reduce the data availability significantly. Based on, the dominant wind direction of SW and footprint climatology, the location of flux tower is considered suitable for flux measurement.

  • We present a way of quantitatively characterizing solar active regions on the basis of their evolutionary paths. To determine characteristic properties of active regions with different sizes and configurations, we use a physics-based model to derive a relation between emerged magnetic flux and injected magnetic helicity (Flux-Helicity relation), the former of which gives scale information while the latter represents the magnetic field configuration of an active region. We demonstrate how this relation provides evolutionary paths of active regions and determines their characteristic properties, through a comparison with modeled active regions obtained from magnetohydrodynamic simulations.

  • Penetration depth of Nb electrodes in $Nb/A1O_x/Nb$ Josephson junctions has been measured by resistive method. For a given applied field, the total flux through the junction is temperature dependent because the penetration depth of Nb electrode varies with temperature. If the total flux equals an integral multiple of the flux quantum at certain temperatures, resistive peaks appear at those temperatures. The penetration depth of Nb can be determined by applying the above condition, The temperature dependence of penetration depth was found to be well described by the two-fluid model.

  • Numerical simulation was applied to investigate the Taylor vortex flow inside the concentric cylinders with a constant radial temperature gradient. The reliability of numerical simulation method was verified by the experimental results of PIV. The radial velocity and temperature distribution in plain and 12-slit model at different axial locations were compared, and the heat flux distributions along the inner cylinder wall at different work conditions were obtained. In the plain model, the average surface heat flux of inner cylinder increased with the inner cylinder rotation speed. In slit model, the slit wall significantly changed the distribution of flow field and temperature in the annulus gap, and the radial flow was strengthen obviously, which promoted the heat transfer process at the same working condition.

  • Understanding of the exchange between the water and energy which is happening between the surface and atmosphere is the basic of studying water resources. To study these, lots of researches using Noah Land Surface Model(LSM) are in progress. Noah LSM is based on energy and water balance equation and simulates various hydrological factors. There are diverse researches with Noah LSM are ongoing in overseas, on the other hand not enough study has been done. Especially there is almost no study using uncoupled Noah LSM in Korea. In this study we used data from Korea Flux Tower in Haenam(HFK) and Gwangneung(GDK) as forcing data to simulate the model and compared its result of net radiation, sensible heat flux and latent heat flux with the observation data to assess the applicability of Noah LSM in Korea. Regression coefficients of the comparison results of Noah LSM and observation show good agreement with the value of 0.83~0.99 at Haenam and 0.64~0.99 at Gwangneung which means Noah LSM can be trusted.

  • The active transport characteristics of anions of cell membrane model which irradiated by $^{60}Co\;{\gamma}-ray$ was investigated. The cell membrane model used in this experiment was a sulfonated copolymerized membrane of poly(1-methyl-4-vinylpyridiniumiodide-co-divinylbenzene : MeVP-DVBI). First, the initial flux of $OH^-$ and $Cl^-$, $Na^+$ of membrane which was not irradiated was decreased with increase of thickness of membrane $80-200{\mu}m$, increased with increase of NaOH concentration 0-0.5mol/L and MeVP-DVBI concentration 20-80% was increased with initial flux of $OH^-$ and $Cl^-$, decreased with initial flux of $Na^+$. Second, the initial flux of membrane which was irradiated was less than that. And the driving force of pH of irradiated membrane was significantly increased more than membrane which was not irradiated. The initial flux of the $OH^-$ ion was decreased with increase of $H^+$ ion concentration. As selective transport of $OH^-$ and $Cl^-$ of cell membrane model were abnormal, cell damages were appeared at cell.
