Effects of the Leakage Tangential Velocity on the Leakage Flow Path in Shrouded Axial Compressor Cascades (축류압축기 슈라우드 캐비티내의 누수유동 경로에 대한 연구)

  • Measurements of the leakage flow in the shrouded cavity were performed in axial compressor cascades at $Re=2.6{\times}10^5$. This paper describes the effects of the leakage flow tangential velocity on kinematics of the leakage flow in the shrouded cavity and consequent overall loss and exit flow turning at stator blade row downstream. Flow data and flow visualization images consistently indicate that leakage flow circumferentially migrates 2, 4 and 5 blade passages in the direction of rotation for ${\upsilon}_y/c=0.09$, 0.35 and 0.45, respectively where ${\upsilon}_y$ is the leakage tangential velocity and c is the mainstream velocity. The leakage flow contracts to a jet across the seal-tooth resulting in an increase in the leakage axial velocity-doubling the leakage axial velocity in upstream cavity compared to that in the downstream cavity. Consequently, two flow regions are distinguished before and after the seal-tooth. As increasing the leakage tangential velocity, the overall loss downstream of stator blade row decreases and the exit flow turning in the range of span. from the hub endwall to 15% increases while the decreases in the flow turning from 15% to 30% span is observed.

Effects of Refrigerant Oils and Molecular Sieve on Air Conditioner using Alternative Refrigerant (대체냉매를 사용한 에어콘에서 합성오일과 건조제(M/S)의 영향)

  • To protect the ozone layer, R22 will be replaced with HFCs. R407C is a leading candidate as alternative refrigerant for air conditioner due to its similar thermodynamic characteristics with R22. In replacing R22 with R407C, the compatibility with lubricating oil is of major concern. Polyol ester (POE) oil among the synthetic oils is considered to be the best lubricant for use with R407C because of good electrical properties and miscibility. However, lubricating ability of mixture of R407C/POE oil is lower than that of R22/mineral oil due to the production of acid by hydrolysis which causes corrosive wear. Therefore, to minimize water content, it is needed to develop a molecular sieve desiccant which is compatible with R407C and ester oil. This paper discusses (1) the change of properties of POE oil when current molecular seive is used, (2) the effects of POE oils and additives on durability of compressor. Through compressor life test and bench wear test, it was found that inadequate use of POE oils and additives may promote the deteriation of molecular sieve, resulting in decrease of durability of compressor.

Biomechanical Comparison of Spinal Fusion Methods Using Interspinous Process Compressor and Pedicle Screw Fixation System Based on Finite Element Method

  • Objective : To investigate the biomechanical effects of a newly proposed Interspinous Process Compressor (IPC) and compare with pedicle screw fixation at surgical and adjacent levels of lumbar spine. Methods : A three dimensional finite element model of intact lumbar spine was constructed and two spinal fusion models using pedicle screw fixation system and a new type of interspinous devices, IPC, were developed. The biomechanical effects such as range of motion (ROM) and facet contact force were analyzed at surgical level (L3/4) and adjacent levels (L2/3, L4/5). In addition, the stress in adjacent intervertebral discs (D2, D4) was investigated. Results : The entire results show biomechanical parameters such as ROM, facet contact force, and stress in adjacent intervertebral discs were similar between PLIF and IPC models in all motions based on the assumption that the implants were perfectly fused with the spine. Conclusion : The newly proposed fusion device, IPC, had similar fusion effect at surgical level, and biomechanical effects at adjacent levels were also similar with those of pedicle screw fixation system. However, for clinical applications, real fusion effect between spinous process and hooks, duration of fusion, and influence on spinous process need to be investigated through clinical study.

  • A dosed-loop sensorless stroke control system for a linear compressor has been designed. The motor parameters are identified as a function of the piston position and the motor current. They are stored in ROM table and used later for the accurate estimation of piston position. Also it was attempted to approximate the identified motor parameters to the 2nd-order surface functions. The 2nd-order surface functions are divided into 2 or 4 sub-sections for more precise identification of motor parameters. Some experimental results are given in order to show the feasibility of the proposed control schemes for linear compressors.

Optimum Design of Middle-Sized CO2 Water Heater (중형 이산화탄소 급탕기의 최적 설계)

  • Middle-sized $CO_2$ water heater having compressor power of 7.45 kW was designed, and its performances were experimentally tested. Besides, optimum design of the $CO_2$ water heater was conducted by cycle simulation. When ambient temperature of $7^{\circ}C$ and hot water outlet temperature of $80^{\circ}C$ the $CO_2$ water heater showed the COP of 3.2. As hot water temperature increased the COP is getting decreased due to significant increase of compressor power consumption compared to increasing rate of heating capacity. When ambient temperature increased from $-3^{\circ}C$ to $12^{\circ}C$ the COP increased by 30%. The optimum components design of a gas cooler, an internal heat exchanger, and an evaporator were conducted, and the experimental correlation between amount of EEV opening and ambient temperature, and hot water temperature was suggested.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate cooling performance characteristics of mobile air conditioning system using R744 as an alternative of R-134a. In order to analyze the cooling performance characteristics of the air conditioning system using R744 for a passenger vehicle, the developed air conditioning system using R744 was applied in a real passenger vehicle and tested under various operating conditions with the variation of gas-cooler inlet air conditions, evaporator inlet air temperatures and compressor speeds. As a result, cooling capacity and coefficient of performance (COP) of the tested air conditioning system decreased with the rise of the inlet air temperature of the gas cooler but increased with the rise of the inlet air temperature of the evaporator. In addition, cooling capacity and coefficient of performance (COP) increased by 42.2 % with the rise of the compressor speed from 900 rev/min to 1800 rev/min, but it decreased by 55.4%.

Experimental Study on the Performance of a CO2 Heat Pump Water Heater under Various Operating Conditions (이산화탄소 급탕 열펌프의 운전조건에 따른 성능 특성에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • In this study, the steady state performance of a $CO_2$ heat pump water heater was measured with a variation of operating conditions such as refrigerant charge amount, compressor frequency, EEV opening, and water mass flow rate. Transient state performance tests were also conducted to investigate major system effects associated with the interaction between the $CO_2$ heat pump water heater and the water tank. Optimum refrigerant charge amount for the system was 1600 g. At compressor frequencies of 50 Hz and 60 Hz, water mass flow rates of 95 kg/h and 105 kg/h, and EEV opening of 8% and 16%, the water heating temperatures were $65^{\circ}C$ and $68^{\circ}C$ and COPs were 3.0 and 2.8, respectively. In the transient condition, the instantaneous COP decreased with an increase in the inlet water temperature.

  • The eddy viscosity turbulence models were applied to predict the flows through a cascade, and the prediction performances of turbulence models were assessed by comparing with the experimental results for a controlled diffusion(CD) compressor blade. The original $\kappa-\omega$ turbulence model and $\kappa-\omega$ shear stress transport(SST) turbulence model were used as two-equation turbulence model which were enhanced for a low Reynolds number flow and the Baldwin-Lomax turbulence model was used as algebraic turbulence model. Farve averaged Wavier-Stokes equations in a two-dimensional, curvilinear coordinate system were solved by an implicit, cell-centered finite-volume computer code. The turbulence quantities are obtained by lagging when the men flow equations have been updated. The numerical analysis was made to the flows of CD compressor blade in a cascade at three different incidence angles (40. 43.4. 46 degrees). We found the reversion in the prediction performance of original $\kappa-\omega$ turbulence model and $\kappa-\omega$ SST turbulence model when the incidence angie increased. And the algebraic Baldwin-Lomax turbulence model showed inferiority to two-equation turbulence models.

A Study on the Performance of HCFC22 and Alternative Refrigerants in Heat Pumps (열펌프를 이용한 R22대체 혼합냉매의 성능에 관한 연구)

  • This paper is concerned about the performance of HCFC22 alternative refrigerants used in heat pumps and industrial chillers. A water-to-water breadboard heat pump with counter-current heat exchangers and a hermetic compressor was built to carry out the experiments with various refrigerants. For each test, more than 40 temperatures, 4 pressures, power input, mass flow rates of the heat transfer fluids were measured. Refrigerants tested were HCFC22, R290(Propane), an azeotrope of 45%Propane/55%R134a mixture, and a nonazeotropic mixture of Calor 50. All tests were conducted under ARI test A condition. It is found that the COP and capacity of propane were 18% and 2.5% higher than those of HCFC22 while the COP and capacity of 45%Propane/55%R134a mixture were 3.5% and 5.3% higher than those of HCFC22 respectively. Also the COP and capacity of Calor 50 were 17% and 7.8% higher than those of HCFC22. Compressor discharge temperatures of alternative refrigerants were roughly $35^{\circ}C$ lower than that of HCFC22 indicating that these refrigerants are good from the view point of compressor reliability. The charging amounts for the alternative refrigerants were reduced by 40-60% as compared to that of HCFC22. Overall, it can be said that hydrocarbon containing alternative refrigerants are excellent in thermodynamic performance but should be used with considerable care due to their flammability.
