  • MMS has been seen as the key application in its entry into the 3G mobile markets. Furthermore, the combination of WLAN and 3G wireless technologies will make MMS service more popular, bringing benefits to both service providers and their customers. To realize seamless MMS service over WLAN and CDMA2000 networks, we design and implement new platform architecture by reusing the existing standards and network elements at the same time. We employ loose coupling approach and Mobile IP approach to propose new platform architecture, interfacing MMSC with many existing components. Based on our platform architecture, we also present seamless MMS delivery implementations that can't be possible within the current MMS reference architecture. This paper will make a contribution for service providers to offer their customers with seamless MMS service over WLAN and CDMA2000 networks.

  • Interconnecting wireless local area networks (WLANs) with third generation (3G) cellular networks has become an issue of great interest. However, a Vertical Handover (VHO) causes an abrupt change in link bandwidth. Due to such a change, TCP triggers unnecessary fast retransmission during a Downward VHO (DVHO) from a cellular network to a WLAN, causing throughput degradation. Thus, we propose a new reordering mechanism for DVHO that suppresses unnecessary retransmission due to the spurious duplicate acknowledgments. We analytically investigate the throughput of TCP in the literature and our proposed scheme. Through the numerical and simulation results, it is shown that our proposed TCP achieves better performance in terms of throughput, compared with Nodupack with SACK.

  • In the virtual home environment (VHE), which was proposed to offer global roaming and personal service environment portability, user's profiles and service logics are conveyed from home network to visited network to provide services at the visited network. Because user's profiles and service logics may contain confidential information, some procedures for mutual authentication among entities for offering confidence are needed. For these issues, we propose and analyze three 3-Party mutual authentication Protocols adaptable to the VHE in 3G ; password based mutual authentication protocol, mutual authentication protocol with CHAP and key exchange and mutual authentication protocol with trusted third party.

  • As the knowledge society matures, not only distant, but also off-line universities are trying to provide learners with on-line educational contents. Particularly, high effectiveness of mobile devices for e-Learning has been demonstrated by the university sector, which uses distant learning that is based on blended learning. In this paper, we analyzed previous m-Learning scenarios and future technology prospects. Based on the proposed m-Learning scenario, we designed cellular phone-based educational contents and service structure, implemented m-Learning system, and analyzed m-Learning service satisfaction. The design principles of the m-Learning service are 1) to provide learners with m-Learning environment with both cellular phones and desktop computers; 2) to serve announcements, discussion boards, Q&A boards, course materials, and exercises on cellular phones and desktop computers; and 3) to serve learning activities like the reviewing of full lectures, discussions, and writing term papers using desktop computers and cellular phones. The m-Learning service was developed on a cellular phone that supports H.264 codex in 3G communication technology. Some of the functions of the m-Learning design principles are implemented in a 3G cellular phone. The contents of lectures are provided in the forms of video, text, audio, and video with text. One-way educational contents are complemented by exercises (quizzes).

  • The fifth generation(5G) of wireless networks will connect not only smart phone but also unimaginable things. Therefore, 5G cellular network is facing the soaring traffic demand of numerous user devices. To solve this problem, a huge amount of 5G base stations will need to be installed. The base station positioning problem is an NP-hard problem that does not know how long it will take to solve the problem. Because, it can not find an answer other than to check the number of all cases. In this paper, to solve the NP hard problem, we compare the tabu search and the genetic algorithm using real maps for optimal cell planning. We also perform Monte Carlo simulations to study the performance of the Tabu search and Genetic algorithm for 5G cell planning. As a results, Tabu search required 2.95 times less computation time than Genetic algorithm and showed accuracy difference of 2dBm.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between social networks and perceived self-competence. The subject were 350 third and sixth graders selected from a public elementary school in Seoul. The children were administered the Pattison Psychosocial Network Inventory and The Self Perception Profile for Children. Three major questions are addressed; l)age changes 2)sex differences, and 3) the relation between the characteristics of social networks and self-perceived competence. Data were analyzed by pearson's product moment correlation, one-way ANOVA. Proportion measures were also used since they had allowed for the observation of relationship between two subsets of people within given categories(e.g.,the number of relatives divided by the number of relatives plus nonrelatives). The effects of age and sex of child on the number and daily contact with kin, nankin, peers, adults, males, and females were found. Sixth graders had a larger number of adults than third graders. While children had a greater number of adults than peers, they had more contact with peers than with adults in their network. It was found that boys had greater number of people in their network than girls. And boys had a larger number of and more contact with males, and girls had a larger number of more contact with females. The structure of childrens' social networks structure were correlated with perceived self-competence.

  • The increase in data traffic calls for investment in mobile networks; however, the saturating revenue of mobile broadband and increasing capital expenditure are discouraging mobile operators from investing in next-generation mobile networks. Mobile network sharing is a viable solution for operators and regulators to resolve this dilemma. This research uses a difference-in-differences analysis of 33 operators (including 11 control operators) to empirically evaluate the cost reduction effect of mobile network sharing. The results indicate a reduction in overall operating expenditure and short-term capital expenditure by national roaming. This finding implies that future technology and standards development should focus on flexible network operation and maintenance, energy efficiency, and maximizing economies of scale in radio access networks. Furthermore, mobile network sharing will become more viable and relevant in a 5G network deployment as spectrum bands are likely to increase the total cost of ownership of mobile networks and technical enablers will facilitate network sharing.

  • Directional sensor networks (DSNs) can significantly improve the performance of a network by employing energy efficient communication protocols. Neighbor discovery is a vital part of medium access control (MAC) and routing protocol, which influences the establishment of communication between neighboring nodes. Neighbor discovery is a challenging task in DSNs due to the limited coverage provided by directional antennas. Furthermore, in these networks, communication can only take place when the beams of the directional antennas are pointed toward each other. In this article, we propose a novel multiple token-based neighbor discovery (MuND) protocol, in which multiple tokens are transmitted based on an area exploration algorithm. The performance of the protocol is evaluated using the Cooja simulator. The simulation results reveal that the proposed MuND protocol achieves lower neighbor discovery latency, with a 100% neighbor discovery ratio, and has a relatively low communication overhead and low energy consumption.

  • The integration of 3G networks and WLANs as complementary has been begun to attract much attention in industry as well as academia. This topic is becoming a burning issue, and one of the key questions which it raises is how to support a seamless vertical handoff. This paper introduces a new network interface selection algorithm for energy-efficient vertical handoff in tightly coupled systems capable of supporting seamless handoff. Our proposed scheme, Wise Interface Selection (WISE) switches the active network interface, after taking into consideration the characteristics of the network interface cards and the current level of data traffic, with the cooperation of the mobile terminals and network. Network interface switching operates independently on both the downlink and the uplink for the purpose of energy conservation. We show through simulation that less energy is consumed with WISE than when only a 3G network or WLAN interface is used, resulting in a longer lifetime for the mobile terminals. In the case of TCP connections, additional throughput gain can also be obtained.
