지상파 4K UHDTV 제1차 실험방송 결과와 향후 추진 계획

  • 지상파 방송 4사(KBS, MBC, SBS, EBS)는 지난 2012년 10월 9일부터 12월 31일까지 3개월간 KBS 관악산 송신소에서 지상파 상용망에서 4K-UHDTV(Ultra High Definition Television) 실험방송을 실시하였다. 세계 최초로 이루어진 실험인 만큼, 국내뿐만 아니라 미국, 일본, 유럽의 DTV 선진국에서도 많은 관심을 보였다. 무선국 허가에서부터 송출, 전송, 수신, 평가 등 실험방송 기획, 구축 및 운용은 KBS에서 담당하였고, KBS를 포함한 각 사들은 4K UHDTV 실험방송용 콘텐츠의 기획, 제작, HEVC 부호화, TS 스트림 다중화를 담당하였다. 본 실험방송을 통해 지상파 방송사들은 6MHz 대역에서 4K-UHDTV 서비스 실현 가능성을 확인하고, 콘텐츠 제작 노하우를 확보하였다. 더불어 방송망 계획을 위한 전송, 부호화, 수신 파라미터 도출에 성공하였다. 2012년의 1차 실험방송에서는 6MHz 대역을 활용한 100W급 4K-30프레임 송수신 실험, 관악산 송신소 중심 5km 반경 15개 지점에 대한 필드테스트를 실시하였다. 2013년에는 1kW급 4K-60 프레임 중심의 제2차 실험방송을 추진하고 있으며, 이는 상용 방송네트워크를 활용한 4K UHDTV의 조기 실현 가능성을 다각도로 파악할 가치 있는 기회가 될 것이다.

Study on the technology of ATSC terrestrial DTV broadcasting service using single frequency networks (단일 주파수 망을 이용한 ATSC 지상파 디지털 TV 방송서비스 기술 연구)

  • In this paper we propose an efficient method to broadcast digital television signals using Single Frequency Networks (SFNs) in the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) transmission systems. Since the proposed schemes to synchronize multiple transmitters minimize the changes from the conventional ATSC system, the hardware complexity for the changes is very low. Our simulation results show that the proposed scheme makes less than 0.1 dB degradation at the threshold of visibility (TOV: BER= 3$\times$$10^{-6}$) in the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. It is possible to reduce the performance degradation by increasing an initialization period of the proposed scheme.

Comparison of Multi-channel Terrestrial Broadcasting Service Method Focused on MMS and KoreaView (지상파 다채널방송 서비스 방식 비교 연구 (MMS와 KoreaView 방식을 중심으로))

  • The Terrestrial DTV service compliant with ATSC has been advancing for years. In KBA(Korean Broadcasters Association), a multi-channel service was broadcasted on air during the period of the 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany with the various type of MMS(Multi Mode Service) using MPEG-2 encoding method. MMS Service can provides not only one HD channel but also serveral additional services within 6MHz bandwidth. Using digital video compression technology(MPEG-2), many various programs such as HDTV, SDTV, Audio and Data are able to be transmitted within the same bandwidth. From November 2009, KBS has been preparing an advanced MMS service, 'Korea-View' which has both methods of encoding, MPEG-2 and H.264 that is compliant ATSC mobile standard, A/153. Korea-View is a kind of multi-channel broadcast service to provide one HD and 3 SD programs with the bandwidth of 6MHz. Terrestrial multi-channel service is required to focuse on expanding viewer service. Such Terrestrial multi-channel services will contribute to transferring to digital broadcasting and to extending the viewers' welfare. Due to advances in digital technology, Pay-TV channels has increased to hundreds. Even though digital switchover is being proceeded, terrestrial broadcasters have been unable to deliver multi-channel services. In this paper, technical features and differences of MMS and Koreaview will be analyzed regarding terrestrial multi-channel broadcasting services, and the politic direction will be proposed in accordance with introduction of future service.

A Study on RF/PON Transmission System for CableTV Network Upgrade (케이블TV 네트워크 고도화를 위한 RF/PON 전송시스템에 관한 연구)

  • Recently, Cable communications services are becoming the HDTV to 3DTV, UHDTV broadcasting and 100Mbps to 1Gbps Internet. however existing technologies are limited to provide high-quality broadband services in the HFC network. The network upgrade technologies have some problems that Up/Downsteam frequency extension, Cost of upgrading by using DOCSIS3.1, EPOC and Legacy STB compatibility, Cost of upgrading the network by RFoG, RF overlay PON. This paper propose the RF/PON based gigabit Transmission system in order to provide the 1Gbps internet without using frequency and the Multiscreen to IP devices. After the proposed RF/PON system was developed and implemented, this paper evaluate the performance of RF/PON system for simultaneously real-time braodcasting and 1Gbps internet, Multiscreen service, and so on.
