In this study, an automation tool was developed for rapid evaluation of machine tool spindle designs with automated three-dimensional finite element analysis (3D FEA) using solid elements. The tool performs FEA with the minimum data of point coordinates to define the section of the spindle shaft and bearing positions. Using object-oriented programming techniques, the tool was implemented in the programming environment of a CAD system to make use of its objects. Its modules were constructed with the objects to generate the geometric model and then to convert it into the FE model of 3D solid elements at the workbenches of the CAD system using the point data. Graphic user interfaces were developed to allow users to interact with the tool. This tool is helpful for identification of a near optimal design of the spindle based on, for example, stiffness with multiple design changes and then FEAs.

Three dimensional (3D) non-linear finite element analysis of offshore pipeline is investigated in this work with the help of general purpose software Abaqus. The general algorithm for the finite element approach is introduced. The 3D seabed mesh, limited to a corridor along the pipeline, is extracted from survey data via Fledermous software. Moreover soil bearing capacity and coefficient of frictions, obtained from the field survey report, and are introduced into the finite element model through the interaction module. For a case of study, a 32inch pipeline with API 5L X65 material grade subjected to high pressure and high temperature loading is investigated in more details.
A finite element model is presented for the analysis of composite steel-concrete beams based on a refined high-order theory. The employed theory satisfies all the kinematic and stress continuity conditions at the layer interfaces and considers effects of the transverse normal stress and transverse flexibility. The global displacement components, described by polynomial or combinations of polynomial and exponential expressions, are superposed on local ones chosen based on the layerwise or discrete-layer concepts. The present finite model does not need the incorporating any shear correction factor. Moreover, in the present $C^1$-continuous finite element model, the number of unknowns is independent of the number of layers. The proposed finite element model is validated by comparing the present results with those obtained from the three-dimensional (3D) finite element analysis. In addition to correctly predicting the distribution of all stress components of the composite steel-concrete beams, the proposed finite element model is computationally economic.
In this study, the material characterization and the dynamic behavior of 3D orthogonal woven composite materials has been studied under transverse central low-velocity impact condition by means of the micromechanical model using finite elements. To build up the micromechanical model considering tow spacing and waviness, an accurate unit structure is stacked in x-y-z direction repeatedly. First, the mechanical properties of 3D orthogonal woven composites are obtained by means of virtual experiment using full scale Finite Element Analysis based on the DNS concepts, and the computed elastic properties are validated by comparison to available experimental results[9]. Second, using the implementation of this validated micromechanical model, 3D transient finite-element analysis is performed considering contact and impact, and the impact behavior of 3D orthogonal woven composite is investigated. A comparison study will be carried out in terms of energy absorption capabilities.
The drawbead is used to control the material flow into the die and increase the forming quality during the binder wrap process and the stamping process in the sheet metal forming. Drawbead restraining force (DBRF) is controlled by geometrical parameters and influenced by process parameters such as friction coefficient and blank thickness. In order to inspect the effect of process parameters, parameter studies are performed with the variation of parameters using finite element model of drawbead which is utilized reliably for the calculation of the drawbead restraining force. Drawbead analysis is carried out with 2-D plane-strain element and 3-D shell element. After the verification of the accuracy of the drawbead model with 3-D shell element, it is utilized to the prediction and the investigation of the effect of process parameters. The result of parameter studies can be utilized to the die design in the tryout stage.

In this paper, a total strain-based hysteretic material model based on MCFT is proposed for non-linear finite element analysis of reinforced concrete structures. Although many concrete models have been proposed for simulating behavior of structures under cyclic loading conditions, accurate simulations remain challenging due to uncertainties in materials, pitfalls of crude assumptions of existing models, and limited understanding of failure mechanisms. The proposed model is equipped with a fully generalized hysteresis rule and is formulated for 2D plane stress non-linear finite element analysis. The proposed model has been formulated in a tangent stiffness-based finite element scheme so that it can be used for most general finite element analysis packages. Moreover, it eliminates the need to check that tensile stresses can be transmitted across a crack. The tension stiffening model is a function of the bar orientation and any orientation can be accommodated. The proposed model has been verified with a series of experimental results of 2D RC planar panels. This study also demonstrates how parameters of the proposed model associated with cyclic damage modeling influences the pinched cyclic shear behavior.
Hot stamping, which is the hot pressing of special steel sheet using a cold die, can combine ease of shaping with high strength mechanical properties due to the hardening effect of rapid quenching. In this paper, a thermo-mechanical analysis of hot stamping using the finite element method in conjunction with phase transformations was performed in order to investigate the plastic deformation behavior, temperature history, and mechanical properties of the stamped car part. We also conducted a fully coupled thermo-mechanical analysis during the stamping and rapid quenching process to obtain the mechanical properties with the consideration of the effects of plastic deformation and phase transformation on the temperature histories at each point in the part. The finite element analysis could provide key information concerning the temperature histories and the sheet mechanical properties when the phase transformation is properly considered. Such an analysis can also be used to determine the effect of cyclic cooling on the tooling.
In this paper, a meshfree-enriched finite element method (ME-FEM) is introduced for the large deformation analysis of nonlinear path-dependent problems involving contact. In linear ME-FEM, the element formulation is established by introducing a meshfree convex approximation into the linear triangular element in 2D and linear tetrahedron element in 3D along with an enriched meshfree node. In nonlinear formulation, the area-weighted smoothing scheme for deformation gradient is then developed in conjunction with the meshfree-enriched element interpolation functions to yield a discrete divergence-free property at the integration points, which is essential to enhance the stress calculation in the stage of plastic deformation. A modified variational formulation using the smoothed deformation gradient is developed for path-dependent material analysis. In the industrial metal forming problems, the mortar contact algorithm is implemented in the explicit formulation. Since the meshfree-enriched element shape functions are constructed using the meshfree convex approximation, they pose the desired Kronecker-delta property at the element edge thus requires no special treatments in the enforcement of essential boundary condition as well as the contact conditions. As a result, this approach can be easily incorporated into a conventional displacement-based finite element code. Two elasto-plastic problems are studied and the numerical results indicated that ME-FEM is capable of delivering a volumetric locking-free and pressure oscillation-free solutions for the large deformation problems in metal forming analysis.
In this study, 3D sheet metal forming analysis program is developed by explicit finite element method. In this program, analysis flow just follows the real engineering process to provide the user intuitive understanding and smooth contact alorithm improves the accuracy of stress prediction. The capability of this program are demonstrated by various examples.
During the shape rolling process the influence of reduction ration and taper of shape roller on deformation and limit of ductile fracture such as free surface cracks developing in the workpiece has been studied. The deformation behaviours were analyzed by the 3-dimensional elasto-pastic finite element method and the conditions of ductile fracture were determined from 3-dimensional elasto-plastic finite element method and modified Cockrogt-Latham criterion. The deformed geometry and prediction of ductile fracture by 3-dimensional elasto-plastic finite element method are compared with experimental results The calcuated results are in good agreements with experimental data. The analysis used in the study was found to be effective in predicting the shape rolling process.
