  • Composite materials, being light-weight and of high mechanical strength, are increasingly used in various industries such as the aerospace, automobile, sporting-goods manufacturing, and ship-building industries. Recently, manufacturing of composite materials using 3D printers has increased. 3D-printed composite materials are made in free-form and adapted for end-use by adjusting the fiber content and orientation. However, research on the machining of 3D printed composite materials is limited. The aim of this study is to develop a machine learning method to select machining conditions for machining of 3D-printed composite materials. The composite material was composed of Onyx and carbon fibers and stacked sequentially. The experiments were performed using the following machining conditions: spindle speed, feed rate, depth of cut, and machining direction. Cutting forces of the different machining conditions were measured by milling the composite materials. PCA, a method of machine learning, was developed to select the machining conditions and will be used in subsequent experiments under various machining conditions.

  • The small molecule binding to the c-Jun N-terminal kinase 3 (JNK3) was examined by the measurements of saturation transfer difference (STD) NMR experiments. The STD NMR experiment of ATP added to JNK3 clearly showed the binding of the nucleotide to the kinase. The STD NMR spectrum of dNTPs added to JNK3 discriminated the kinase-bound nucleotide from the unbound ones. After the five-fold addition of ATP to the dNTPs and JNK3 mixture, only signals of the cognate substrate of JNK3, ATP, were observed from the STD NMR experiment. These results signify that by the STD NMR the small molecules bound to JNK3 can be discriminated from the pool of the unbound molecules. Furthermore the binding mode of the small molecule to JNK3 can be determined by the competition experiments with ATP.

  • In this study, the structural performance of the specimen fabricated through 3D printing was evaluated through monotonic loading experiments analysis to apply to 3D printed structures. The compression and flexural experiments were carried out, and the experimental results were compared to the finite element model results. The loading directions of specimens were investigated to consider the capacity of specimens with different curing periods, such as 7 and 28 days. As a result, the strength tended to increase slightly depending on the stacking direction. Also, between the 3D-printed panel composite and the non-reinforced panel, the bending performance depended on the presence or absence of composite reinforcement.

  • A 2D comic model, a comic-style line drawing model having only eyebrows, eyes, nose and mouth, is much easier to generate facial expressions with small number of points than that of 3D model. In this paper we propose a 3D emotional editor using a 2D comic model, where emotional expressions are represented by using action units(AU) of FACS. Experiments show a possibility that the proposed method could be used efficiently for intelligent sign-language communications between avatars of different languages in the Internet cyberspace.

  • Most of agricultural structures are consisted of complex components and exposed to various boundary conditions. There have been no ways to express those structures exactly for model experiment. As an alternative, 3D printer can produce any type of solid model. However, there are limited informations related to structural experiments using 3D printer. The object of this study gives the basic informations to structural engineers who try to use 3D printer for model experiment. When PLA was used as a supplier for 3D printer, the outcomes showed less heat deformation to compare with ABS. To test the material properties, two kinds of experiments (three-point flexibility test and compression test) were executed using universal testing machine. In three-point flexibility test, plastic hinge and its deformation were developed as observed in material such as steel. The behavior was in a linear elastic state, and elastic bending modulus and yield force were evaluated. In the compression test using unbraced columns with hinge-hinge boundary condition, the constant yield forces were observed regardless of different lengths in all columns with same section size, whereas the compressive elastic modulus was increased as the length of column was increased. The suggested results can be used for model experiments of various agricultural structures consisted of single material.

  • To protect wireless sensor networks (WSNs), various key distribution and management schemes have been proposed. However, most of them conducted simulations and experiments for performance evaluation by considering only the two-dimensional (2D) environments. In this paper, we investigate the effect of real-world three-dimensional (3D) topographic features on the key pre-distribution schemes for WSNs. For this purpose, we analyze and compare the performance of three pairwise key pre-distribution schemes in 2D and 3D environments: full pairwise (FP), random pairwise (RP), and full and random pairwise (FRP) schemes. For the experiments, we employ a network simulator NS-3 and 3D graphic tools such as Blender and Unity. As a result, we confirm that there was a difference in the performance of each scheme according to the actual 3D terrain and that the location-based FRP that considers deployment errors, has the highest efficiency in many aspects.

  • Yangdan Cave displays as a Vadose Cave rathre than a Phreatic Cave due to its fluvial activated ramnants of the cave beds and walls. Geochemistry experiments of the speleothem (stalactite and stalagmite)were generated in order to find out the cave material characteristics using XRD. The results present that the composition of the cave materials consists of Calcite, Dolomite, Quartz, K, K-Feldspar. Plagioclasc, Illite, and Kaolinite. These materials commonly exhibited less mineral composition than other caves. In terms of calcite compostion of the cave the upper cave materials (d=3.049) contain less than lower cave materials (d=3.055). Finally the calcite compostion of the cave materials between stalactite (d=3.055) and stalagmite (d=3.054) displays simillar values.

  • A 3-D rehabilitation robot system is developed in this paper. The robot system is for the rehabilitation of upper extremities, especially the shoulder and elbow joints, and has 3-D workspace for enabling occupational therapy to recover physical functions in activities of daily living(ADL). The rehabilitation robot system, which is driven by actuators, has 1 DOF in horizontal rotational motion and 2 DOF in vertical rotational motion, where all actuators are set on the ground. Parallelogram linkage mechanisms lower the equivalent inertia of the control elements as well as control forces. Also the mechanisms have high mechanical rigidity for the end effector and the handle. Passive motion mode experiments have been performed to evaluate the proposed robot system. The results of the experiments show and excellent performance in simulating spasticity of patients.

  • When a plant owner requests plant 3D CAD models in the format that a shipbuilding company does not use, the shipyard manually re-models plant 3D CAD models according to the owner's requirement. Therefore, it is important to develop a technology to compare the re-modeled plant 3D CAD models with original ones and to quantitatively evaluate similarity between two models. In the previous study, we developed a graphic user interface (GUI)-based comparison system where a user evaluates similarity between original and re-modeled plant 3D CAD models for piping design at the level of unit. However, an offshore plant consists of thousands of units and thus a system which compares several plant 3D CAD models at unit-level without human intervention is necessary. For this, we developed a new batch model comparison system which automatically evaluates similarity of several unit-level plant 3D CAD models using an extensible markup language (XML) file storing file location and name data about a set of plant 3D CAD models. This paper suggests system configuration of a batch-mode-based comparison system and discusses its core functions. For the verification of the developed system, comparison experiments for offshore plant 3D piping CAD models using the system were performed. From the experiments, we confirmed that similarities for several plant 3D CAD models at unit-level were evaluated without human intervention.

  • Species selective spectroelectrochemistry (SSSE) is described by relating the derivative absorbance (dA/dt) signals with electrochemical currents for conventional transient electrochemical experiments. Expressions relating the currents with the dA/dt signals were obtained. From these expressions, physical constants such as coefficients and molar absorptivities of electrogenerated species can be determined. By obtaining both derivative absorbance and current signals concurrently and comparing them, one can perform the SSSE experiments. The utility of the SSSE in sorting out electrochemical information is demonstrated.
